In 1986, the district association of the west part of the city funded a competition for a new outdoor sculpture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík. Jón Gunnar´s Sun Voyager won the compitition, and the aluminium model (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm ) was presented to the city for enlargement. Since I finally put the terracotta lamp together for my drop Wednesday, I’ve been kind of been obsessed with the clay body. It is such a rich color and velvety rough to the touch. I have ideas for this clay body but it won’t be these shapes. Now that I have much more experience making lamps I want to EXPLORE. I have a job that pays my bills. I’m so grateful for it because it allows me to give my kids more than I had growing up. And here is the but. But I LOVE creating. I think about making something that puts a smile on my face. I doodle on anything, paper, old shirts, my skin. I want my art to bring me joy, not additional pressure, which I get plenty of from my ft job. I’ll be changing things around here. Working and moving slower, just with much more intention. I know I will fail. I know I will have successes. And I will decide what those are. I hope you stick around. I hope you resonate with my eternal search to evolve. I hope you find your joy. I hope you also find that one thing (or many) that have you wake up before the birds chirp to the rising sun. There were lots of dogs out walking their people, I saw two Coot chicks in the pond, and there were carpets of Bluebells in the woodland area. For a month now, it's been the first task of the day, which has often led to larger works being developed over that time. 30/30 day 29: Lost Walk Digital GPS trace on Ordnance Survey App tracking 3.91 km walk 2024 Today's prompt: Map how you feel Notes: - I mapped out the letters to the word "lost" by drawing with the pen tool in my phone's photo editor over a screenshot of a digital map in the OS App. I then walked the route using the app's ability to "record activity" by tracking the walk with live GPS data. The app uses this data to overlay or "draw" the digital trace of your movement on top of a map in real time, as well as calculating the overall distance travelled, moving time, average speed, and elevation traversed. - The walk was 3.91 km in duration; lasting 44 minutes; with an average speed of 5.4 kph; total ascent 16 m and total descent 16 m; carried out in Croydon, UK; on 29th April 2024, 7:33 - 8:18 pm. - It's publically available as a route on OS App, so you too can get lost. Link in bio. - A poem written by walking. I thought it was a funny and poetic contradiction to map the word "lost" into a specific, measured territory. I wasn't lost as I walked it, I had the map out on my phone the whole time to follow the route. I did go down some roads I'd never been down before though, and I feel like I must have looked lost as I kept stopping, staring at my phone, turning around and going back precisely the way I'd come. - The link to yesterday's piece "Lost Time" is honestly coincidental; the word "lost" worked for this idea too and I'd forgotten I'd used it yesterday. - Credit to artist Ed Hadfield, who inspired me to download the OS App and record my walks. He speaks of both art and walking as somatic embodied experience, and works with text in his practice. - I think also of artists who engage with walking in their practice, like Richard Long. I think of psychogeography and situationism. I like to think about how I live in relation to what's around me in the place I am. 28/30: “Invent your own measurement of time” ‘The Three Pillars of Time’ fineliner and colouring brush on paper also when i’m out socialising, i’ve got an hourglass labelled ‘Emotional Stamina’ ⏳ i’m sure many artists are the same as me when i say that whenever i get into making art, timekeeping just goes out the window! i’d just get into the zone and i lose concept of time and usually the only thing that brings me out of my reverie is when my tummy or nature calls, or once i feel exhausted. this also reminded me of a significantly long period in 2017 when time meant nothing and my work-life balance was messed up coz i was painting for 18 hours and sleeping 3 hours for many days and nights. #30works30days #artquest #alexandrahon #time #hourglass #inthezone

Day 28 ~ I have a private gallery. I call it Paradise. I exhibit a cone there. I don’t remember when I started and I don’t know when I’ll stop. I just know that the exhibition is not quite permanent, it has gaps, or breaks. I put a cone on, I start a cycle. It falls down for some reason, time stops. I come back and put it back, a new cycle starts. Tonight we celebrated my eldest son’s final high school theatre performance. We even got to spend a little time with him before he was off to the cast party— knowing his favorite restaurant and having one of his oldest friends with us helped. 27/30: “Experiment with ways to document your work” ‘cutting plans for ‘The Matriarch’’ inverted image of drawing plans for ‘The Matriarch’ relief printmaking requires inverted thinking, as we need to cut out the negative space (the part that will turn out white in a print) in order for the image to show through. sometimes i catch myself getting confused and forgetting which part was supposed to be cut out, hence having an image reference which has been inverted and horizontally flipped helps ease the cutting process. #30works30days #artquest #alexandrahon #linocut #printmaking #printprocess

30/30 day 27: Document QR code linking to Josh Philpott's Artquest Exchange profile webpage 2024 Today's prompt: Experiment with ways to document your work Notes: - Since my work for 30/30 is already documented as it's submitted daily on Artquest Exchange, I figured it would be playful and apt to submit an intervention which simply links back to my profile where my 30/30 submissions can be viewed. - Today's submission is simultaneously an artwork in the form of a JPEG image file; an intervention in the form of a QR code; and live documentation of my ongoing daily 30/30 submissions until April 30th (or documentation of documentation which already existed on Artquest exchange depending on how you look at it), and therefore the submission is also its own documentation. - This is a restaging of a work from last year's 30/30: " The Complete Documentation of Works by Artist 0819" submitted on 14th April 2023, responding to the same prompt. That work took form as a clickable hyperlink. Back then you could submit a single hyperlink as your work for the day, which allowed me to create an infinitely recursive click-through loop with the hyperlink linking to the same webpage which hosted it. 26/30: “Go smaller” ‘Art postage stamp’ linocut print and digital photo manipulation my latest print ‘Summer Break’ as a postage stamp. this reminds me of my GCSE Art project, where i chose to design a Malaysian stamp that featured the Rafflesia flower for my final piece. but in this case, i drew an A1 size version of it, watercolour pencil on thick watercolour paper, and even recreated the perforated edges. #30works30days #artquest #alexandrahon #postagestamps #linocut #print #

30/30 day 26: Study of World’s Smallest Hand-made Sculpture “The Beginning” (2017) by Dr Willard Wigan MBE, (Approx. 350 times larger than the original) Pencil on cardboard 2024 Today's prompt: Go smaller Notes: - I decided to draw the world's smallest sculpture on the smallest feasable surface I could find. - A quick Google search lead me to The Beginning (2017) by Dr Willard Wigan MBE, which according to Guinness World Records holds the record for world's smallest hand-made sculpture, measuring 0.078 x 0.053 mm. It's a sculpture of an embryo carved from a single kevlar fibre, mounted inside a hollowed out human hair. Dr Wigan is an artist from Wolverhampton specialising in micro-sculpture made under a microscope using hand-made precision tools. - The cardboard is a removable tab from a box of detergent, which I kept because I liked how on one side (reverse of the drawn side) says "remove to open" combined with its kidney bean shape and small size. The shape also houses the embryo quite nicely and is suggestive of a womb. The tab measures 30 x 17 mm. My very rough maths with a calculator estimates that's about 350 times larger than the original sculpture. Please correct me if I'm wrong. - I'm pleased by how apt Dr Wigan's choice of a human embryo for his record breaking smallest sculpture is, as they too are very small - although nowhere near as small as his sculpture by the time they've developed arms and legs (at ninth week of pregnancy, about 18mm in length, according to Wikipedia). There's nice symbolism in the suggestion of growth, and in speaking to the universal commonality in all humans having grown from an embryo - a single point, from seemingly nothing. I don't know what representing this on recycled packaging from a commodified product intended to conveniently wash clothing in a household appliance might mean. Hit me up if you have any ideas! Saved as a JPEG file. - I'm interested in golden colours that mean to represent or simulate real gold, the chemical element. Throughout today I thought about the value assigned to gold based on scarcity; how historically the value of money was based on a fixed quantity of gold - the gold standard; I looked up the price of gold and learned that it fluctuates by the second on the bullion market and you can track it live if you look it up; what symbolic meaning the colour of gold carries when it's simulated digitally or in pigment or in fake jewellry without using actual gold in its material. - I couldn't think of anything to do with all of this info though, so here's this.
