After two weeks of several major projects at work and dealing with Bodie’s snake bite, topped off with my son getting pink eye; I decided today would be a good opportunity for mental health day. My son woke me up early, he’s extra cute in the mornings, and was particularly adorable today. As I packed the car with his daycare items and my paddling equipment the mom guilt set in. I was suddenly torn between spending extra time with Wolf (because I know the days are right around the corner when friends will be cooler than mom) and doing something for myself. Reluctantly, I took him to daycare and headed to the lake with Willow. I was quickly reminded that I made the right choice. Willow and I shared a perfect morning. Off leash, we played, connected and glided across the lake. I took a camera and remembered how to use it! I have not found another activity that centers my soul the way a dog and a paddleboard does. Today was magic and much needed. The Wolf and I will have many more adventures. It’s easy to forget how much this charges my battery🔋 #supwithpup #nodogleftathome

I’ve been feeling more connect to Bodie and Willow lately. Learning the sport of Barn Hunt has been a great way for us to work together as a team, build better communication, and harness that craziness into something fun. Now you all know trialing hasn’t been my thing, but we had a lot of fun this weekend and bonded from the experience. I wasn’t expecting to place in our first trial this weekend, but we got several places and both dogs completed three qualifying runs to earn their novice titles. However, if I’m being honest the best part was watching my reactive dog behave so damn good at the venue. He was a perfect gentleman around all the new dogs. I couldn’t be prouder of him for working so closely with me. We were both nervous, but we trusted each other and found the ratties! Willow was wonderful as always. She was nervous to work in a new place, and got a little frustrated in her first run that resulted in a NQ. But she adapted quickly and just kept improving with each run. People have already asked me if I’ll get a third dog again. The answer is yes, but I’m waiting. When I lost Kona, it took me a long time to heal, and it effected the way I bonded with Bodie more than I thought it would. And then I also felt the need to connect with Riley a bit more. So, this time around I’m letting my heart heal, and making sure my connections with Bodie and Willow are where I want them to be first. I have already felt a shift with them now that Riley is no longer physically with us. There’s more dedicated one-on-one time with each of them and making sure I truly see them as the unique individual souls that they are. Riley was damn near perfect, and Kona was (perfect in my eyes), LOL we all know she was a challenging puppy. I want to be free of putting any expectations on a new puppy, and make sure that the next pup has two wonderful mentors to learn from. So, what am I doing to help with some additional connection? We’re scheduled for their first Barn Hunt trial in April! There’s a backpacking trip on the calendar, and two other camping trips. I bought them a box of fun new challenging enrichment toys. Oh, and Bodie, just got a herding ball (see stories). We’re doubling down on time together and finding ways to make sure they feel loved, enriched, and fulfilled. #SupWithPup #NoDogLeftAtHome

What is it about snow? The world feels so bright and special after a few fresh inches. I love it ever more after a storm and the sky is the most beautiful, saturated blue. The forest is quieter than usual, it never feels as cold as it looks, and time stands still. Walking through the forest in the snow is a simple joy I have loved since I was a child. And here’s the even more interesting part – this cup-filling pleasure is felt by every dog I have ever owned. How do I know this? Well, there’s the obvious; they run and play with extra exuberance and bigger smiles. But at the end of our snowy walks, I can feel a level of satisfaction that I only have when we play in the snow. Sometimes I worry that Willow and Bodie aren’t getting enough ‘adventures’. Sometimes I catch myself comparing their lives to Riley and Kona’s, and that’s not really fair because my life is simply in a different place now. But when I stop and think about it Bodie and Willow are on the biggest adventure of all. Every night when I read my son a bedtime story, Willow is laying in the room with us. Today when we went hiking Bodie heard Wolf’s voice from a distance and ran to be with him. Table scraps are snuck under the table regularly. Tantrums stress us all out, but both of them come to my aid an offer lots of cuddles when Wolf is in a timeout. My son asks for the dogs to be with us. He loves kisses from Willow, and always saves a piece of his banana for Bodie. He’s learning to throw a frisbee well enough that the dogs have decided his effort is worth the chase! It’s the most amazing thing – to watch their bonds form. I’m not forcing any of it either, the dogs and Wolf are doing this all at their own pace and it’s just beautiful. How is it fall already?
Getting to paddle with Willow and the Wolf this summer was magical, but I want to tell the other side of the story because you only see the perfect little moments in the pictures I post. Pretty much every time we were about to launch Wolf decided to give me a hard time about something and have a meltdown. Luckily every time that happened there was another woman at the dock. All I needed to do was exchange a glance. There was an instant mutual understanding of “I’ve been there”. These women knew exactly what to do, they walked over and helped me wrangle my kid, board, dog, bag, and paddle so we could launch safely. Once we’re on the water all is well and the moments really are lovely ;) I just want to say 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏 to these women, that was a huge help. Those small gestures made me feel seen and understood. Motherhood is hard, ya’ll! And thank you to all my other friends who constantly show up for me in small ways, your hugs, check in texts, and vent sessions are so appreciated. This weekend Walter hiked three more High Peaks. First we hiked up Mt Marcy but didnt go to the summit. It was cold and windy and we knew we would be back. We went down the backside of Marcy and then up to Gray. Then down Gray and up Skylight. It was also very windy on Skylight as you can see from Walter’s ears blowing in the wind. Then back down Skylight and up to Marcy again. It was still windy up there but the sun was out and Walter took a little nap. With all the excitement of the day I forgot to take any solo pictures of Walter on the summit of the highest mountain in NY. In the last video you can hear Walter yelling at me for slowing him down as usual as we hiked back to the car.

I’ve learned a few new things this summer from paddling with a toddler and a dog, here are some tips for anyone else who wants to do the same: ⏺️ Toddlers are like puppies, their attention spans are tiny! Keep your paddles short, I didn’t want Little Wolf to be bored, cranky or associate paddling as torture, so our outings were always short and sweet. ⏺️ Swim Lessons. This spring I started swim lessons with the Little Wolf, I wanted him to be comfortable and confident on and in water. He always wears a PDF, and he’s done a great job of respecting the water. ⏺️ Always. Bring. Snacks. If you have a little one this just goes without saying, it’s positive reinforcement for your kiddo ;) ⏺️ Teach your toddler to hold onto mommy. I taught Wolf this before we ever paddled together, and it came in handy on the water. I want him to know he can grab my leg, foot, shorts or whatever he needs to in case he feels unsteady. ⏺️ Keep your kiddo close. Willow was a little upset that Wolf got the spot at my feet this year, but she’s the better swimmer right now, so it’s just the safest place for him. ⏺️ I’m sure this goes without saying, but I only took Andrew out with the dogs I trust the most to stay on the board. That’s Riley and Willow. Bodie isn’t clam on the water, and bringing him would have been too challenging and not the best experience for Wolf. Every time I think Riley might not be able to handle a camping trip or a road trip, he surprises me. Every. Single. Time. Typically, senior dogs do better with routine and familiar environments, but this seasoned adventure dog seems to thrive on a change of scenery.
