I have heard many times, growing up, that the animals we ate were not affected by their poor treatment, by their confinement, by their lack of any meaningful life, because “that’s all they know”, and therefore don’t feel anything different. They don’t know any other possibility, so therefore it’s ok to mistreat them, to beat, abuse and confine them, and when the slaughter comes, they will feel deliverance and relief. And as I was heavily conditioned and brain washed, I believed it. All of it. What a relief when my blinders came off. Because then, I had the power to change, and do something about the incredible misery imposed on billions of animals. I may be one person, but I could choose to not engage with any of this nonsense. I chose knowledge and compassion, because I looked at the reality of the agricultural industry. And guess what I found? I found out that, indeed, not a single animal willingly walks to their demise, with no fear and no pain. They know. Ask anyone who’s worked in a slaughterhouse. More and more are coming forward and they have much to say. Have a listen. It is highly instructive. I am forever amazed at how truly disconnected we are from our food sources and the products we consume. Nobody likes to think they are supporting animal abuse, or see it as a necessity. I was that way too, raised to not question these things or think otherwise. How many times do we hear people say “I love animals” when their consumerism tells another story. Only when we become fully awake to the realities of the food we put in our mouths, the clothes we wear, and the astronomical amount of stuff we buy that drips with incredibly cruel actions and immense suffering do we begin to see our role in it. People say all the time “I can’t watch, it’s too painful”. I did too. And I felt hypocritical because me not watching meant that I could continue to support those cruel systems, as I could tell myself that it wasn’t that bad, that it was just a one-off, that all this evidence was somehow fabricated. Anything to justify not taking note of my role in all of it. Taking responsibility for our actions means understanding the ripple effects of those actions and choices. It’s the very failure to take responsibility, to see, to inquire, to dig deeper into reality that has led to the world being in the state it is in. “Do your best until you know better. And when you know better, you do better” said the very wise Maya Angelou. Just about everyone in the world knows better, is aware of the incredible cruelty surrounding us, yet prefer to not look at hard evidence to spare their feelings. And only a fraction of all those people are actually trying to do better. In a time in history with endless access to current and solid (re: irrefutable) information, ignorance truly is a choice.

70 billions. That is the estimated (but likely underestimated) number of sentient, precious beings (chickens, cows, pigs, turkeys, sheep and many other species) who are killed by suffocation, mutilation, maceration, preceded by lives of misery in cages, overcrowded pens, and other disgusting dwellings referred to as “farms”. If we add aquatic animals that are also farmed, that number easily climbs to well over 200 billion - although the truer figure likely falls in the trillions. Trillions of lives that were meaningful. Meaningful to them, to their families. Lives torn apart by human greed, ignorance, and selfishness. On this World Day for Farmed Animals, I give love and compassion to those billions of animals who perish, year and year, for unnecessary human gain. Sunday Human of Vision ❤️ Leah Garces - president of @mercyforanimals, author, animal rights activist, teacher - has over 20 years of experience leading various campaigns geared toward animal protection. She has partnered with multiple food companies, has given TEDx talks, written books, and launched Compassion in World Farming. Her aim is always the same: educate about, advocate for, and create change for animals. Her method: exercise mindful leadership, foster rural economic development, and strive for social justice. Mercy for Animals is world-renown for their investigations and reforms of factory farms. But one of the things that set its president apart has been her belief that animal rights activism is for everyone, including farmers. She has set her sights on improving not only the plight of animals, but also the lives of consumers and farmers. She understood early on that successful animal activism requires the acceptance of unexpected points of view. Whereas many animal-abusing industries hold opposite views, she has managed to obtain some key successes in improving intensive confinement systems from farmers. Her reasoning focused on how factory farms not only hurt animals, but farmers as well. One example of the vast reach of her advocacy is a project called Transfarmation, whereas she teamed up with an ex-chicken farmer, which encourages former animal farmers to start producing plant crops, and connecting them to businesses in need of their products. These farmers have come to realize that adopting a holistic approach to farmer and switching to plant-based crops is good for the animals, the farmers, the environment, the consumers, and ultimately the community. Leah's drive to shape an internationally-recognized organization into a more effective and stronger model for the whole animal activist movement, her willingness to forge difficult relationships with factor farms stakeholders in order to advance her compassionate agenda, and her tireless efforts toward building global strategic objectives to end factory farming once and for all are just some the things that maker her, in my eyes, a human of vision. 📷 leahgarces.com

Sunday Human of Vision ❤️ Gene Baur (@genebaur) is a name that needs no introduction for most of us in the animal rights movement. The president and co-founder of @farmsanctuary has been a pioneer and a prominent voice for farm animals; he has spent decades visiting farms, slaughterhouses, and other oppressive institutions, conducted undercover investigations, and made public the broad abuse and cruelty that animals suffer through in these deplorable places. Millions of people have viewed his interviews and pictures, learning about what big ag always strives to keep hidden from view. He was instrumental in passing the very first US law prohibiting severe animal confinement in the US. He continues to this day to work at the legislative level to reform the food industry, and raising awareness with books, lectures, and appearances on major US networks. He was hailed by the Time Magazine as the conscience of the food movement. Farm Sanctuary was born in 1986 as a multipurpose institution of its own: ease the pain of farm animals formerly abused on factory farms; public exposure through tours and social media accounts of the sentience of farm animals and the many benefits of veganism; and a place of advocacy for systemic reforms. Its very first rescued animal was a downed sheep that was discarded like garbage once deemed of no use to the farmers who used and abused her. And with a Master’s degree in agricultural economics, it would be highly difficult – foolish in fact – to try and discount the solid, evidence-based arguments he puts forth supporting a complete overhaul of agricultural practices, and how big aga currently is literally killing not only billions of animals, but our very environment. His list of accomplishments is long and impressive. Yet, Gene Baur never strays from his values and the fight for better living conditions for farm animals, until such a day when no animals are ever raised for food. Horses are precious. They have stood alongside humans for thousands of years, serving them, obeying them, being exploited by them. Beautiful Dally 💔 She passed away last week after being passed around like she didn't matter. She came to FARM as a $1 purchase, where her needs were never attended to except for a handful of us who faught hard for her to get the most basic of care. She was then returned to her "owner" who then abandoned her again, and sent her to a sanctuary. At least she received care for the last few months of her life. After a hard life being used in the brutal H4 world, she deserved so much more than what she got. I will be forever grateful to @carolinebaker182 @bucklechic3069 @ubique77 Laura and Maureen for being part of the only team who actually stepped up to care for this girl (and all the residents) while living in that hell hole. You are now at peace pretty girl. We tried, and are still hoping for some real consequences for the way you were all treated.
