Klaus, back to see his doctor today for foot surgery #4 He's a pretty good patient. It feels like we are at a veterinarian office with someone all the time. But it's hard because we no longer have our emergency medical fund due to low Sustainer numbers. Good news though - today two new Sanctuary Sustainers joined! Thank you so much. Sanctuary Sustainers give a recurring monthly donation of $20 or more and those funds help cover our most basic necessities like food, water, hay, straw and medication. If we are able to reach our goal of 300 sanctuary Sustainers each month, we will be able to have that stability every month and knowing all of those basic needs are met will be so amazing. Lodi loves getting out of her pen to graze and run around—she’s a very busy little one year old! Already 100lbs, Lodi is probably going to be at least double this size when she’s done growing; her breed is American Guinea Hog, and their average weight ranges between 150 and 300lbs. American Guinea Hogs are a smaller breed of pig, and while some people choose to keep them as pets, they’re often bred for human consumption. Have you seen gaffs before? These are the knives that are attached to a rooster’s leg prior to a cockfight. The sharp long blades eventually result in the death of one or both birds. Currently, we are still searching for hundreds of homes for the remaining roosters we hope to seize. Despite all the horrific abuse the roosters just want to be loved in a safe home where they can take care of some hens and do rooster things like dust bathing and searching for treats. This case has the potential to be the largest RESCUE of cockfighting roosters ever in WA. Most often roosters end up euthanized but we have the potential to save these boys and find them the homes they deserve. We need help from our community though. We need adopters. (Link in bio)This has been a long time coming, but we are happy to announce after quite literally spending 30k on Pickles health and her barn, we have secured a buddy for her. This little girl is coming to us from a rescue in NJ. They took her in and when she developed an abscess, sadly they were not dedicated to caring for her. They were not willing or able to make accommodations for her like we did for Pickles. This is why it was SO important to us to have this space. Rescuing animals from horrible places comes with its own set of risks, and infectious diseases are one of them. It’s part of what we sign up for when we agree to take in an animal- there’s always a risk! Luckily, we were looking for a friend for Pickles and because she has a very maternal personality we were also looking for a younger animal as well, so this worked out. She will need all the intake things that we normally provide each resident who walks through ours doors. She will be in a short quarantine in Pickles barn ( we’ve built a QT room within the Pickle Palace) and then they will be able to meet! She also will need a sponsor!!! Please help! ❧ Hi everyone, I hope you and all yours are safe; and feel cruel to even wish that after hearing that Rafah has been ordered to evacuate - with no place to evacuate to - and heavy bombing has already caused horrible injuries and deaths in children and adults. 1.2000,000 Palestinians who had to flee their homes (most of whom who have lost everything already: families, friends, loved ones, their home, belongings, livelihoods...) are currently sheltering in Rafah, including 610,000 children, plus about 280,000 people who have been living there before. The possibly greatest massacre in history is about to begin. Meanwhile, in Northern Gaza, a 'full-blown famine' is underway. But I have to talk about Heartstone, too, because lives are on the line here as well. Several incredibly humbling, heartwarming attempts to help us have been undertaken by some of you again, and I can't ever thank you enough. However, not much has moved since, and we're in the last day or two to be able to raise the funds. I can't process with the property that would provide a lifeline if we don't have the money. And this time, it will finally be too late. It will simply be impossible to relocate and set up before the final deadline, that is only three weeks away. I don't even know what to ask for anymore. Of course, please keep donating if you at all can; I know it might seem like wasted money, but everý but that comes in might encourage others to chip in, too. We need to believe in the miracle to happen as long as there is the tiniest glimpse of hope. If only people who might help in one way or the other would at least stick to their words after having promised to help. I said it before, the silence - in so many ways - is deafening. So few genuine souls out there, it seems. But you know what? A huge number of those who are have flocked together around Heartstone. You, reading this, are one of them, or you wouldn't have borne with me writing about those atrocities again and again, and my despair about the imminent destruction of Heartstone - and the cows. Today was an absolutely amazing day!!! My parents came out early so my mom & I could get waters power washed clean and refilled while my dad mowed the whole property (that isn't fenced in). Then Vicki & Ruben arrived and the demolition began!! We had this little "lean to" in Gus, Brenda, Karen, & Peter's paddock. We had thrown the thing together way back in 2019 when we needed to hastily bring Brenda, Karen, & Linda (RIP 💔) home from the Indy Pig Rescue hoarding/neglect case. It was just meant to give them shelter while we waited for their shelter to arrive. After some heavy snow this winter, the plywood started coming off and it became more than just an eyesore. It needed to come down. Vicki, Ruben, & my dad got to work tearing it down while my mom & I finished the waters. I finished up and walked over to help when I saw that the frame was still in pretty good shape! And that sparked an idea!! One of the roosters' run had fallen during that big snow also. We needed to rebuild the run for it to be predator proof for the boys, but with all our vet bills we haven't had the extra funds for a project like that. It's been heavy on my heart and something I've been trying to figure out how to make work since. Well. The frame from the lean-to made for the perfect frame for the run!!! I asked the group if we could keep it & I'd figure the rest out later. But they not only quickly figured out how to move it, but they also immediately got to work tearing down the broken run!!!! Now all we have to do is add hardware cloth & a roof to the frame. And the boys will have their beautiful, safe space back!!! We are just a small sanctuary trying to do big things. We dont have much in resources and not everything here looks the most beautiful. But our residents are our priority. And their daily care, along with vet care, are our number one focus and where all our funds go. We don't skimp out on vet bills or buy fancy things. That's how we make your donations stretch. How we make it all for the animals. But sometimes it takes some real creativity. I truly don't have words for my gratitude for these 4 amazing humans today. 💜

Flashback to Gus a few years ago in this adorable photo of her holding a dandelion- still one of her favorite treats. This last winters big project was building a Starling House for our little starlings, Choo Choo & Gus. In the starling house is a bed for naps, a table for tea, a couch for lounging and happy, spoiled starlings. The cage is used for sleeping at night only. The starling house porch is screened in for safety. This summer we plan to build an aviary that connects to the back door of the Starling House. Fun fact: Gus poops an average of once every 2 minutes and 56 seconds. Both Hector and Hermia have been on stall rest all week, and Hector is not enjoying his me-time as much as Hermia is. Today he got a Kong with treats, which kept him busy for about three minutes, but I was able to convince him to accept some snuggles. Hermia is much more sanguine about her respite from the madding crowd, and is happy to have her classical music, a tummy rub, and a couple of treats to keep her strength up. Kavalier and Arthur also needed some emergency tummy rubs today to keep them going. Check it out - Pippin is up on his feet! Our wonderful friend Tracey over at @sweetpeepsmicrosanctuary suggested pool noodles for increasing Pippin's comfort level. I completely misunderstood her description (oops...) and my attempt at the pool noodle leg wrap can be seen on his right leg. Tracey sent me a great video and I corrected the wrap on his left leg. HOWEVER! The wrap on his right leg seems to be helping so we're going with it. We're changing the bandaging twice daily and monitoring his toes for any signs of swelling - so far so good! We're anxiously awaiting the vet visit on Monday so hopefully we can get a better understanding of how to help this dude! So much of this is learning as we go and reaching out to others for help. Petunia is turning one! Looking back at these old pictures of her, it's crazy to see how small she once was. Born as the runt of a litter of 10, she has grown into one of the sweetest pigs at the sanctuary. And one of the smartest. Sparky is in belly rub position! He is one of our mellowest cows ❤️ Sparky was originally born on a beef ranch. A wildfire started the day he was born and he was left behind. Being so young, he couldn’t run from the fire and suffered a lot of burns. As sad as that is, it actually saved his life in the long run because the farmer didn’t want to deal with his wounds. A lovely couple took him in and nursed him back to health. Once their other cow passed away, Sparky came to live with us so he wouldn’t be lonely. Hi everyone, I will try to quickly add an overview of the situation here for those who have started following only recently. The current Heartstone farm is at the receiving end of climate collapse; neverending torrential rain and a spring well in neighbouring land have caused the farm to be flooded year-round and an underground lake to form the farm yard is now sinking in. As a result, the infrastructure is collapsing and the farm has been rendered not only dangerous to animals and humans, but also unusable and not meeting legal requirements for the keeping of cows anymore. The latter is placing the cows in imminent danger of being seized and destroyed, and the only lifeline possible is to relocate to a farm that has the required infrastructure and is of course otherwise suitable for the care of cows, especially the blind ones and others with special needs, who make up the majority of Heartstone's current residents. The current farm cannot be improved to meet those requirements, and can not be saved as a cow sanctuary in general. There are no other sanctuary spaces for cows in Ireland available, and even if they magically appeared, the herd is not legally allowed to travel anywhere but to another property in my name. (This is also one of the many reasons why British sanctuaries cannot be a solution to the problem.) Relocation is the only option. Time has already run out for us; an extension I got to rectify the situation is approaching its end. I have detailed the scramble for finding a (even remotely) suitable property for months; with one after the other having been snapped up by others or fallen through for other reasons. The same has just happened a few days ago. There is one hope left; a property I had been looking at in the past but that had been sold - or so we thought - is back on the market. With all the funds we hopefully have available combined, we need another 150k, roughly - no price has been agreed upon yet - to make that work. And we have very, very few days and have to move within two, maximum three weeks. Would you be so kind to please, please, please help make that happen? It is the only, and finally last hope there is. Speak up for animals the way you would want someone to speak up for you, if you were in their place. You deserve to express yourself. It’s not easy but someone’s gotta do it. Be the person who doesn’t stay silent. Be the person who does the right thing, no matter how alone you may feel at first. Look to others you admire, who are speaking up, eventually you will make new friends, it does get easier. Better to be yourself and risk being criticized, disliked or ostracized by people you don’t even respect, than squash who you really are so others can stay comfortable while nothing changes. While animals are used as resources, exploited, tormented and slaughtered every second of every day, and most people take part in it and ignore them. Don’t be most people. When you look back on your life, do you want to know you took risks and did something? Or will you look back in regret? If you were being exploited, enslaved and about to be killed, what would you think of someone sitting on the sidelines doing nothing? And what would you think of the person speaking up for you and trying to save you? Be the latter, for them and for you. Don’t look away, join the good fight instead. This feline family joined us yesterday ❣️. They were found in a box by the road where trash is usually left 😢. Thank God a very kind family found them 🙏. Mama is extremely sweet and we’ve named her, Margot 💛. Her 4 babies are around 10 days old. Margot and her babies are, thankfully, in good shape. Again, this is likely a case where a callous human dumps a mother and babies because they didn’t get mom spayed. Surely, they could have sought help instead of this 😡💔. Hi everyone, a late post, since the work is ending later for me every night until mid summer when the days get shorter again - or the end. 😶 The situation is surreal, there is hardly any hope left - it is already nearly impossible to move before time is out, legally as much as technically, and even if it would be able to manage that somehow, we are still those darn 150k away from being able to secure the place we would need as a lifeline. As someone said recently, it isn't fair that so many literally give their last Euro or Dollar, while those to whom even a sum like the total would be mere peanuts, or at least doable without much sacrifice, can't be bothered to help. And, having to beg and plead again and again makes me feel bad, too, because it is those same ones who already don't have much themselves that donate again and again and again. It is incredibly humbling to see people value the concept and work and lives of the gang that much - and crushing the rest of the world doesn't give a damn. And of course, the overall situation is totally devastating. How many more days will I be able to continue pretending there is still hope, that the miracle can still happen? And how am I supposed to carry on, 16 hours every single day, backbreaking work, shifting tonnes and tonnes of weight every day with no letup - until the end? Will it even be possible? How can I care for the beings closest to me while they are on death row? The ones I have sacrificed everything for, friends, family, any kind of personal life, comforts, my health? Knowing they won't even be able to leave quickly and peacefully, but after panic and repeated torture? I can't give you the answer, I don't have it. And so, since I have to keep functioning and no-one else is here to help with anything whatsoever, I will stubbornly pretend it is still possible to raise the money - within very very very few days, because otherwise the move is finally 100% impossible - and try to somehow find the hope in the last corner of my heart to continue taking care of the gang as best as I can. For myself, there is never time anyway. And so, I can't help but plead with each and everyone of you again: please help!

In his op-ed yesterday in the @kentuckycom , Patrick Battuello, Founder of the nonprofit Horseracing Wrongs, wrote about how Americans are conditioned to think of horseracing as a sport and horses as athletes. But, he asks: “In what other sport are the athletes kept in intensive, solitary confinement except for a brief training period in the morning or when racing? . . . In what other sport are the athletes routinely dying on the playing field? . . . And in what other sport are the athletes bled-out and butchered upon retirement?” Horseracing Wrongs has documented over 10,000 kills at U.S. racetracks since 2014. Their research shows that on and off the tracks over 2,000 racehorses are killed across America every year. Aortic rupture, pulmonary hemorrhage, blunt-force head trauma, broken necks, severed spines, ruptured ligaments, shattered legs. Over 2,000 - that's about six every single day. 12 of the 24 former cockfighting roosters have made it safely to NC! We are only able to put 6 on a flight so we’re doing 4 trips. Big thanks to @delta for getting the boys there safely. They have been flying on direct overnight flights. We have two more flights next week. In the photo you can see our setup for their flights. We cover the crates with blankets so the boys don’t get stressed and mostly so they can’t see the rooster next to them and fight through the crates. We desperately need more crates and towels. 24 of our crates are being flown and we won’t get them back so we need crates for the possible next seizure and any old towels to keep the boys safe. We’ll be heading north on the 5 this weekend so if you’re in WA between Olympia and Mt Vernon and have these items to donate please let us know! Connelly - our cute, fuzzy, orange ball of energy 🥰🧡! He took a while to weigh enough for neuter surgery, but he’s officially ready for adoption now and at the Lakewood Petsmart 🐾. Connelly is a very sweet boy and loves kitty friends. He usually has his purr going and loves to snuggle 💞. He is about 3 months old. Our boy is very fast and energetic - he RUNS out of his room when we open the door🏃♂️➡️! Connelly also loves canned food which makes him even more excited 😋. Because of his extra energetic demeanor, we want to make extra sure his new family is a good match for him 😉. 🚨🚨 Graphic Photos of Moz's Wounds 🚨🚨 Here is the progression of Moz's wound! I think you can see why we are so excited by what we saw during her bandage change on Tuesday!!!! 3/28: Day before surgery, wound healing had become stagnant and hernia had become increasingly dangerous. Mind you, her wound was the smallest it had been yet. 3/29: Dr Hawkins sent me this pic immediately post surgery to repair her hernia and remove the wound. 4/12: After a few bandage changes post-op, Moz's incision is starting to become necrotic again. 4/17: Debridement to remove the necrotic tissue. Body wall still holding strong despite a few stitches coming out through that opening. 4/22: First bandage change after debridement and things are looking up. Picture doesn't include the entire wound because the rest was pretty much healed. 4/30: Dr Usimaki took the bandage off and at first glance, said, "Oh wow!" I was terrified it was bad news. And then she said it was about half the size!! I think I let out the biggest sigh of relief!! And that'd nice & healthy tissue there!!! A first since about December 11th. 😭 I don't want to jinx anything. But I'm finally feeling so so hopeful for Moz!!! Dr Hawkins & I even had a conversation about getting Moz back to gaining weight. GUSTAVE CHERCHE UN FOYER OÙ GRIGNOTER SA LAITUE 🥬✨🐰 Arrivé il y a près de deux mois à la SPCA de Montréal, Gustave, un magnifique lapin à la robe grise et blanche, cherche désespérément une nouvelle famille. Le doux Gustave a été abandonné par sa gardienne parce que cette dernière déménageait dans un logement trop petit pour elle et son compagnon. Notre gentil pensionnaire rêve maintenant d’un foyer chaleureux où il pourra recevoir tout l’amour qu’il mérite. ❤️ Gustave est timide au premier abord, mais il révèle son tempérament affectueux et joueur aux humains qu’il connaît. Cette mignonne boule de poils aime particulièrement courir et faire des bonds qui se transforment parfois en sauts de joie frénétiques, communément appelés « binkies » ! 🐇 Il est aussi très curieux de son environnement, adorant explorer et sentir tout ce qui l’entoure. Gustave est un grand amateur de verdures, en particulier de laitue et de persil. ❤️🐖❤️We have 20 rescued pigs with 20 different personalities. Seriously. They are all individuals. But lately they have a gripe with me. They put together a piggy “committee” to tell me it’s their turn to be featured on social media. They are all very happy we saved a family of sheep but they said c’mon…pigs deserve their moment in the spotlight too! So I went out in the big paddock today to get some new photos of piggies. I especially love the first one of girlfriend/boyfriend Amelia and Bandit because they are both smiling. Bill and I love to see our family members happy! Uh-oh How about an early $5 Friday? We are back with Dr. Burge, our avian veterinarian today with Genny Guinea and Klaus. Last time Genny was here was 2 years ago and then she was treated for a broken leg. Today she went back for a broken leg. (Same one, same place) Genny is our only guinea hen. She does "have" a rooster (Tom) and he is a very good boy who watches her and keeps her safe IF she doesn't go exploring without him. 😔🐓 So Genny got herself into a little trouble. She is back in a splint, antibiotics and pain management. You might remember Klaus' foot trouble. He is no stranger to the vet's office or car rides. His foot had healed back in February so he went back outside to do rooster things but I noticed a new limp earlier this week. He will go back in for another small surgery on Monday but for now he is getting started on antibiotics again and foot soaks. (Which he is not entirely a big fan of...)
