Two side-by-side comparisons (please swipe) of Marilyn and her real father, Charles Stanley Gifford. Some people don't think they look alike, but I personally think they look like twins in the first slide at least (I posted this on Threads.) Every time I post about Gifford, I get comments asking how we know he's her real father. A couple of years ago Gifford's granddaughter offered her DNA to be tested and it matched Marilyn's. I admit that a long time ago I was sceptical too, but I think it was really that I didn't want to accept Gifford as her father, being as her rejected her. Marilyn Monroe, then known as Norma Jeane Dougherty, during her time living on Santa Catalina Island, Long Island, with her first husband, James Dougherty, these were all taken in 1943/1944 when Marilyn was 17-18 years old ππ΄πΊ In slide 6, James had just joined the Merchant Navy and taught sea safety. In April 1944, Dougherty was posted to the South Pacific. Norma moved back to Van Nuys, where she was noticed by an army photographer, Lt. David Conover early in 1945. David was a member of the armyβs First Motion Picture Unit. He took the first infamous photos of her working in the army which got her career started in the entertainment industry. David continued to photograph her throughout the Spring and early Summer, as he was the first to immediately see that Norma-Jeane had potential to become a model. Granted a two week furlough in July, he traveled on an extended shoot with her through the Mohave Desert, to Mount Whitney and then to Death Valley. Not long after these photoshoots, he was soon transferred to another unit. But before he left, he delivered some of her pictures to his close friend and who also happened to be a photographer, Potter Hueth. Potter operated a studio on Pico Boulevard in Hollywood, he took Davids insights on Normaβs modeling potential into consideration, and Potter decided to put time into her future. His work with her led to sittings with photographer, William Carroll, and eventually to a meeting Emmeline Snively, the owner of the Blue Book Modeling Agency. I love that bird so much. She was my diva, my mama, my poop-poop, my girl. I can't believe that in the state of Georgia, only one place works on birds, and their urgent care/ER was filled. Was Marilyn her own unreliable narrator? In fiction, there is something known as an unreliable narrator, someone we know as a reader we can't trust, because they give conflicting thoughts and statements. We must take in consideration however, that Marilyn was not only traumatized and dare I say, likely bitter, about her past, but that she made up little white lies to protect not only herself but her family. She made many statements to the press about her mother Gladys. (The first layout I put together with a photo from the last Milton Greene sitting I featured, for they look so alike.) In different interviews and in published books on her word, she said she did not ever live with Gladys. This is not true. When Gladys saved up enough money to buy them a little house in Los Angeles, she did live with her for sometime. One discrepancy was her claim to George Barris that Gladys always spoke with a trace of a Scottish accent because her grandfather was a Scottish immigrant. Apparently this is not the case, as he was born in Indiana. As you can see from the following two photos, they may not have been smiling at each other, but Marilyn claimed her mother never laughed or smiled or held her. So again, we're not really sure if this is true, but even after researching her for years, I tend to take Marilyn's word most things, when perhaps it was an exaggeration. Please let me know if there is anything I said in the caption that is incorrect or misleading and I will gladly change it or elaborate. My own mother once said you must "learn to be a happy learner." Perhaps my choice to write fiction about Marilyn is a blessing in disguise, as I can cloak reality in metaphors. JAMES DOUGHERTY 1921-2005 Husband of Marilyn Monroe James Dougherty was born in Texas, his family moved to Arizona and suffered greatly during the Great Depression and had to live in a tent. Dougherty went to school with actress Jane Russell and went on to become a police officer. He was working night shifts at Lockheed Aircraft when he met Marilyn Monroe (known then as Norma Jean Baker). Monroe had to choose between moving back to an orphanage or getting married, she chose marriage. Dougherty and Monroe married in 1942, she dropped out of high school and became a housewife. They moved to Santa Catalina Island, where he joined the Navy, and in 1944 he was posted to the South Pacific. During this time Monroe was noticed by photographer David Conover, she signed a contract with a modeling agency and then later with 20th Century Fox. Pursuing a film career, 20th Century Fox told Monroe that she couldnβt be married if she wanted to succeed. Dougherty was dismissive of her ambitions and she divorced him in 1946. In 1947, he remarried Patricia Scoman and they had three children and then married Rita Lambert in 1974. Dougherty died in 2005, aged 84. #jamesdougherty #marilynmonroe #normajeanbaker

"I never knew Marilyn Monroeβ¦ I knew and loved Norma Jeane."β β James Dougherty was 21 years old when he married a teenage Norma Jeane Baker β who would go on to become one of the most famous women in modern history. At the time, however, Baker was just 16 and set to return to an orphanage unless she found a husband quickly. Her foster mother set her up with Dougherty, but though their relationship began as one of convenience, the pair soon "loved each other madly." Just two years after they wed on June 19, 1942, Dougherty was deployed to the Pacific Theater of World War II. Their divorce was finalized in 1946, and Dougherty remarried shortly after to a woman who wouldn't let him watch any of his ex-wife's films. Although Monroe moved on as well, famously marrying Joe DiMaggio and then Arthur Miller, Dougherty was still devastated when she died in 1962. Sometimes it just calls that you post a picture of Marilyn from premiere of "How to Marry a Millionaire," in late 1953. One thing I love so much about Marilyn is that she could epitomize glamour while also being a real person full of depth and life and wonder and intelligence. Marilyn next to her siblings. All are half-siblings First, her half-brother Charles Stanley Gifford Jr. from her father's side. (Yes, I realize Marilyn's head is photoshopped from a different photoshoot, but it's the head that counts. That was a strange sentence). Second, her older sister Berniece via her mother. Berniece seems to have resembled Marilyn more with age, not exactly sure why. It could have something to do with the shape of the face or even how she styled and colored her hair. Lastly, the only photograph that I know exists of her half brother Robert Kermit Baker aka Jackie. The poor boy had a hard life due to accidents and illness and died as a teenager. Jackie was Gladys Baker's first child. It was actually Jackie's death that set off Gladys's bout of paranoia and depression in the 1930s, while she was trying to live a life with her daughter Norma Jeane, in the house she had paid for with her job. Unfortunately she had to let go of her job and the house and Norma Jeane. Didn't mean to go down such a sad road, sorry.
