“The harder you resist change, the more difficult the obstacles to overcome.” One of the most beneficial things I received from my therapist, shortly after beginning my “surrender to the shit show,” was a printout with a circle on it. Seems simple, but this was no ordinary circle. This circle represented an individual’s Circle of Control. Oddly enough, the VISUAL of the things within my control inside the circle and the contrast of the things listed outside of the circle, freed something within me. This visual served as a quick reference when anxiety or that feeling of overwhelm arose throughout the day or during certain interactions. It served as a tool to guide me while deconstructing a situation, sorting and labeling what I could and couldn’t directly control, which ultimately, led to reprieve from the pressure I had mounted on myself. You may have heard the saying about “making a mountain out of a molehill.” Mountains…are a matter of perspective. An ant would consider a molehill a mountain, a human would simply step over it or on it. From a plane a mountain looks like…well a raised area of land, much like a molehill would look if you were standing over it. Regardless, mountains are movable. It may be piece by piece, but I’ve gotten pretty good at shuffling pebbles, and this simple little tool has been one of my staple helpers. If ants can do it…we can do it. Happy Monday! ✨ Let’s talk about pricing for a quick sec. When you hire an editor or proofreader, you are not just paying for that person to tidy up your document, make comments, and suggest changes. You’re also paying for their knowledge and their investment in that knowledge—their time and money in education, training, and continued profressional development—in addition to their level of experience. The longer they’ve been doing it, the more efficient with their time and knowledgeable they might be, and so have adjusted their rates accordingly. That said, pricing can vary a lot from editor to editor, and often they simply charge in order to pay their bills, both obvious and not. For example, a significant percentage of each project is set aside for taxes, and is something that the editor takes into account when preparing a quote. All this is to say, don’t be concerned when you see a wide range of pricing for editors! What are your thoughts on the future? The future is both exciting and terrifying. I want to know what will happen next, and the fact that I don't is a never-ending source of frustration. If I could just know what's coming, then I could adequately prepare! I sometimes become upset with God for not telling me the future. I ask Him day after day what He wants me to do, secretly hoping that this will be the time when He whips off the curtain and unveils His masterpiece plan for my life. It hasn't happened yet. And I'm learning that it never will. That's not the way God works. If we knew what would happen next, we would be tempted to do it on our own. We could prepare and have everything ready to meet the future, and God wouldn't really need to be in the equation. But God made us to rely on Him. Part of that is accepting that we can't even know what the next second will bring. Instead of always fretting over the future, God invites us to live in today, to trust Him second by second and see how He continues to meet our needs. Don’t you just love when God throws a summer-like day into the middle of spring? Sunday was one of those days in eastern Pennsylvania. We left for church with sweaters on and came home to change into something cool and spent the afternoon sitting on the patio. It is still too early in the spring to plant flowers and there are dead branches on some bushes to attend to. That work will come soon enough! I sat in a lounge chair and just looked around me. I think green must be God’s favorite color! Everywhere I look, there are shades of green. The leaves on the tree above me seem to literally be filling out on this very warm, sunny day, I know they weren’t that big when I came out here! Just as we clean up the winter debris to prepare for spring/summer weather, trim off dead branches, fertilize the bushes, and spread mulch to keep out the weeds, God is at work in us to bring new life to our spirits and to grow our roots deep and help us branch out in fruitfulness. The Father tends to us by cutting off the dead branches, promoting new growth. Our job is to stay connected to the vine! “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in Me. #MondayMusings Last week, a long-time friend and colleague wrote to apologize. Turns out, in the midst of billing 50 hours at work, attending to the needs of her two little boys (ages 6 and 8), making sure all the homework was done, everyone was fed, and school lunches were made, running an on-time shuttle service to and from extracurricular activities and doctors' appointments, refereeing countless sibling spats, and planning a First Communion “after-party” for a "small" gathering of 20 family members and friends for one of the boys, she hadn't been able to find time to read and respond to a "whenever-you-can-get-to-it" piece of writing I'd sent earlier in the week for her review and comment. Imagine that!?! The audacity. I couldn't write back fast enough. "Please take your 'sorry' back," I began. "There will be no more 'I'm sorry's' exchanged between us. EVER. I've exhausted my quota for one lifetime (two actually) and, if this note is any indication, you have too. Let's just assume we're going to run out of time, fall short, be imperfect, and do God knows what else where each other are concerned a million times. You're good by me. Apologies accepted in advance. And please, do me and you a favor. Don't ever apologize for being all that you are - a hard worker, a loving and dedicated wife, and, above all else, a living, breathing embodiment of everything a boy mom should be. I can always wait and I will. Just having you in my life is enough." Far too many of us apologize far too often for things that don’t warrant an apology. Regrettably, some even do it for the space they occupy and the air they consume. We need to stop. This was a punch in the gut. Last year, after what happened with my youngest, I put myself back in therapy because I knew I was going to need help handling all of that and maintaining being the mom & wife my family deserves. After my therapist helped me through the first few months of that, he said we should start unraveling my C-PTSD and working through all the trauma from my first marriage/divorce. Boy, that’s been a ride. The past decade has been trauma after trauma after trauma…unrelentless. So, this quote makes absolute sense. Heightened state of basal stress and anxiety does a number on you. When things slow down and get quiet, your body and mind don’t know how to react. If anyone else feels this way, I just want you to know you’re not alone. Because I understand you do feel alone when working through these things. The day the temperatures soared, little was left to the imagination that spring had arrived and summer was nipping at her heels. School was still in session. Vacations planned, were weeks away. When summer nips, you move with faster steps. The leather bag that held clubs of varying weights and decisions, was pulled from the cobwebs that clung to the back of the closet. A broken in, catcher’s glove, home to the spider. Winter wear, was washed and folded, assigned to cedar closets and plastic bins. Heavy coats were traded like baseball cards; a wool pea coat for a hoodie. Snow suits for swimsuits. Sleds and saucers replaced, retired until the cold season rolled around again. Funny how that works…seasonal joys. Excitement rekindled. Maybe there is truth to the “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” phrase. Maybe change, recharging, and revisiting, is the key to making all things look new. Except for ice cream. Ice cream, need never be pushed to the back of the freezer. The world lies in front of you and not behind you. What you have behind are your experiences that shape you into the person you are today. They might have been good and bad alike but each one taught you something from which you are better off after the experience. But despite it all, there is a world that lies ahead of you. It is something that you can look forward to, experience to its fullest and learn from in the process. The future holds so much in store for each of us, we know not what it is but it lies waiting for us to experience each new day. We have so much trepidation about the future, but despite it all, even if you get a few curved balls, be ready to experience whatever comes your way. Each one will shape you into the person that you will eventually become in the days ahead. Life is a challenge whichever you look at it, but it’s about the journey that will always stay with you. The memories, the ups and downs, and all the other steps that come your way. You have no need to keep looking back. I've recently been advising my pastor on marketing so been thinking about this: In Exodus 18, Jethro (Moses' father in law) saw that Moses was counseling all of the people himself and suggested that Moses delegate low-priority items to trusted elders and only deal with major stuff. That way, Jethro explained, "you can rest and people can go on in peace." Jethro saw an opportunity to help the man of God and humbly gave his advice. Otoh, Numbers 16 tells of another kind of "helper:" Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. They were "men of renown" in Israel. Popular with the people. They also say an opportunity: "You take too much on yourself, Moses and Aaron, by lifting yourself above the congregation. All of Israel is holy just like you and God is among them." On the surface, they wanted to bring the man of God to their level. Dig deeper though and you'll realize they really wanted to bring themselves up to the preacher's level. Spoiler: God killed them. When you are called on to advise, whether it's the man of God or someone else, do it with the attitude of Jethro. Be humble and aim to help the other person. Don't be like Korah, who was seeking to bring the other person down. #Bible #mondaymusings

REAL TALK: when I first saw this sequence of photos, my response was not loving, kind, or even respectful. Immediately. Yikes...those aren't "flattering." Look at my double chin. Eeeek. Do I look like that? Is that dress really that dumpy? Note to self: never wear that dress again. Also, should I cut my hair? 🛑 STOP 🛑 This was a moment of body image disruption and here's what's different... I CAUGHT myself in the moment of body image disruption. I reminded myself that looking at a 2D version of your 3D self can be weird. The camera lens can't fully capture YOU. Nor does my aesthetic representation represent ALL of me. I am so much more than this body I inhabit. Sure, I HAD the thoughts, but I was ALSO (very quickly) able to RECOGNIZE that the thoughts weren't kind, loving, respectful - or even TRUE. So, I CHALLENGED them. I mean, what does "flattering" even mean (read: looks MORE like the thin ideal - what body shaming BS is that?!). So what if I have a double chin? Does that define my worth as a human? Am I the sum of my chins, weight, or dress size?! Ummmmm NO, I am not (thanks but NO THANKS programming from our fatphobic culture). Then I recalled how I FELT in the moment the photo was snapped. Gleeful, JOY-ful. The breeze catching my hair and my dress, hand in pocket - MOVING with me. The LEGIT fun I was having with my photographer friend as we wandered the streets of Qualicum Beach (shout out to Courtney Brice!). As for my hair (oh, how I've been known to change my hair in an attempt to change how I feel about my body). Anyone else?! Then I reminded myself changing my hair can't heal the wounds of living in a body that's been teased/ mocked/ bullied from age 5 (possibly younger). That's deeper work that a trip to the salon won't fix. I met myself with tenderness for the reality that old body beliefs take time to heal. Healing IS a process that takes time (and is tricky when we're still living in a world that perpetuates body hatred for anything other than the thin ideal). Why share all this?! Never judge a philosophy by its abuse. - St Augustine We have many disruptive conversations in our sessions. These conversations force us to confront our beliefs about our own personal struggles and the challenges facing the world as a whole today. These challenges could be anything for example the fatherhood gap, poverty, marriage, christians serving in the armed forces, accountability, climate change and identity crisis. Should you happen to attend any of these classes you will hear a gently stated caution from St Augustine repeated frequently “Never judge a philosophy by its abuse”. This statement reminds us all to be careful as we process the information we receive being clear that our experience of it may taint our relationship with it. Our awareness that certain people were unable to live up to the philosophy may make us discount its value. The caution is repeated frequently to ensure that we remember to judge the philosophy, principle or concept on its own merit. Where it has been abused, we are reminded to judge it by whether it is consistent with the character of God and not because we or others have been inconsistent in its application. #mondaymusings
