We are so grateful for our IBCLCs!! Show your appreciation by leaving a review for the San Diego Breastfeeding center on Yelp or Google. Full Review: "Non-solicited review because I can’t thank them enough for all the dedication, attention and kindness. Vicky and Robin are true angels. They’re compassionate and very knowledgeable. They do everything they can do help you with your goals and support you and baby’s journey. I saw Vicky a couple times because of shallow painful latch. She helped me in so many ways! In addition to the latch, heavy supply and babys ties, there is some signs of possible gut distress and reflux going on with my baby and Robin has been a great support in that matter. Postpartum alone is hard enough and it’s so important to find the right support group. Don’t hesitate to reach out to these ladies if you need help, I promise it will make it so much better!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . #moms #mommy #mamas #lactancia #normalizarlalactancia #lactanciaenpublico #breastfeeding #breastfeedinginpublic #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #lactanciamaterna #dalesutetamami #madreslactanterd #entodomomemto #entodolugar #lechematerna #lactanciaexclusiva #coronavirus #embarazo #proteccion

It can be alarming to see your baby choke while chest/breastfeeding; you may wonder what is going on and how you can help. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ When a baby begins to feed, the stimulation of the nipple releases hormones from the feeding parent to signal their body to “eject” the milk from the milk ducts. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When this happens quickly and forcefully, sometimes the sudden flow can take the baby by surprise, and they may come off the chest/breast coughing and sputtering. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If all is going well, the baby should learn to manage this within the first couple of weeks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ Laid-back chest/breastfeeding can help your baby handle your letdown during this adjustment period by allowing gravity to lessen the letdown force. If your baby continues to struggle with a forceful letdown, it could indicate something anatomically that is preventing him from being able to adapt. This would be a good time to visit with a lactation consultant. There’s no debating the science on this one: breastfeeding improves public health. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that breastfeeding all babies until they are 2 years old could save the lives of more than 820,000 children each year. As with every medical recommendation it’s not going to be “one size fits all” for every person. However the ferocity with which physicians pressure moms to, say, vaccinate their child in the name of public health is vastly disproportionate to the pressure put on moms by pediatricians to breastfeed. Chest/breastfeeding support in hospitals across the United States varies widely depending on factors like location, Baby-Friendly certification, and staff expertise. To ensure a positive nursing experience, expecting parents can take proactive steps. ⭐Firstly, discussing goals and support needs with their partner is crucial. ⭐Secondly, attending a comprehensive breastfeeding class and researching hospital procedures are essential. Additionally, reading informative books and joining support groups can provide valuable insights. Establishing a visitor policy and selecting a breastfeeding-friendly pediatrician are also important. Creating a hospital plan that prioritizes breastfeeding, seeking assistance from lactation consultants during the hospital stay, and finding a local consultant prenatally can further aid in preparation. ⭐Finally, hiring a birth doula can potentially reduce birth interventions, contributing to a smoother breastfeeding journey. Hey Mums, Some mothers feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. You have the right to breastfeed your baby wherever and whenever your baby is hungry. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 ✅ Remember that you are meeting your baby's needs. It isn't possible to stay home all the time, and you should (and can) feel free to feed your baby while you are out and about. You should be proud of your commitment! Talk to other breastfeeding moms about how they have handled criticism in public. While no one should ever criticize you for feeding your baby, it might help to know ahead of time what other moms have done in a similar situation. 👉 Share this message among moms and tag @mybreastfeedingcafe to spread the word. #breastfeeding #breastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingisnormal #normalizebreastfeeding #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingsupport #empowerwomen #empoweringmoms #breastfeedingjourney #womensupportingwomen

Breastfeeding Misconceptions: Understanding Baby Weight Loss and its Relation to the Lactating Parent's Milk Supply All babies lose weight after birth: A newborn baby takes in approximately 5-7ml of colostrum per feeding in the first 24 hours. Babies are burning more calories than that as they attempt to breastfeed and expel that sticky, gooey meconium. Nature has provided the perfect amount of colostrum in those first few days to nourish your baby and while the quantity is small, the quality is jam-packed with every calorie, immunological property, protein, vitamin, and laxative that your newborn needs to poop and pee. Babies are expected to lose weight in those first few days. That doesn’t mean that mom’s supply is low. Click the link in the bio to read the blog and get more facts about infant weight loss in relation to the lactating parent's milk supply. #lactationstation #sandiegobreastfeeds #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #bodyfeeding #normalizenormalbodies #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingsupport #lactation #classes #newbaby

Breastfeeding in Public Day - where was your first public feed?🤱🏼 I remember being so nervous about feeding in public first time around. My first public feed was in the car in Sainsbury’s car park, and it felt like such a big achievement! I feel lucky to say I have never noticed any judgement when feeding in public, but I know that is not the case for everyone. Many cafes now display ‘breastfeeding friendly’ signs or stickers, which shouldn’t be needed, but hopefully helps those parents who are nervous feel more comfortable. If you are struggling to provide enough human milk to feed your child, please don't hesitate to reach out to us! We would be honored to support you!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Full Review: ⠀⠀ "Heather has been incredible to work with these past 3 weeks (8 weeks postpartum now). I was struggling with breastfeeding and experiencing frequent clogged ducts and after 1 month decided to reach out for professional help. Heather came to our home and observed our baby, informed us about so many important information about newborns. We didn't know our baby had a slight tongue tie and his latch was not ideal for breastfeeding. She laid out a well documented plan to help with my oversupply of breastmilk, feeding plan, exercises to improve his latch and use his tongue better, and much more to help us succeed. After 3 weeks of sticking to the plans we've created, my breasts feel so much better (less clogged ducts) my baby's latch has improved and we feel so much more comfortable and confident breastfeeding. Heather has also been so kind, supportive, and informative these past weeks not just in our breastfeeding journey but emotionally as well as l've been dealing with postpartum anxiety and she has been there to listen to me vent and easy to reach out to when I have questions via email. I highly recommend Heather for your breastfeeding journey and especially if you feel like giving up, don't! Reach out for support, as a first time mom I'm so glad I did and am optimistic that things will get better and better!" (Alexandra M.-via Yelp).

So tired of this line from birth and boob workers who promote formula brands: “I’m supporting formula moms!” The formula industry spends $55 billion dollars a year ‘educating’ and marketing to women about their products. Why do you think your account or podcast NEEDS to add to the a multi million marketing budget? Regurgitating corporate talking points doesn’t help moms. None of this helps moms. It’s helps companies advertise to your audience. At best, it’s naive think otherwise and at worst it’s a cynical cash grab. Formula corporations make money when women stop breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in public is a natural and legally protected right in many places, but challenges and stigmas still exist. Some common challenges are: 👁️ Public Perception and Stigma: Some people may express negative attitudes or make unwarranted comments, which can create anxiety for breastfeeding mothers. 🌳 Lack of Acceptable Spaces: Mothers may feel limited in their options for finding a quiet and supportive environment. 🌍 Cultural Norms: Cultural norms and expectations regarding 'modesty' and public behavior vary widely. 😰 Fear of Confrontation: Mothers may fear confrontation or judgment from others, leading them to avoid breastfeeding in public altogether or feel the need to cover up excessively. 🏛️ Accessibility of Facilities: Public spaces might lack adequate facilities for breastfeeding, such as designated nursing rooms or comfortable seating areas, making it challenging for mothers to breastfeed discreetly. 📜 Legal Awareness: Some mothers may be unaware of their legal rights to breastfeed in public, leading to self-imposed restrictions or discomfort when nursing outside the home. 🪞 Body Image Concerns: Some mothers may feel self-conscious about breastfeeding in public due to body image concerns or fears of judgment based on their appearance. 🔍 A study from the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, concluded that: Awareness creation is needed to empower women to comfortably breastfeed and to sustain societal support of breastfeeding in public. 🤱 #breastfeedingawareness #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic

Did you know that lactation consultants not only help with chest/breastfeeding but can also help with bottle feeding? It’s true! We are here to offer guidance with all aspects of feeding (introducing solids, as well!) and know a ton about bottles and how to balance them with nursing. ⭐When is the best time to introduce a bottle?⭐ The best time to introduce a bottle is after your baby has mastered the art of latching and nursing. There is a window of opportunity when your baby is between 3-6 weeks old where he/she still has an innate sucking reflex and is more willing to try a bottle. ⭐How will I know if the bottle flow is too fast or too slow for my baby?⭐ If the bottle flow is too fast for your baby, he/she will look panicked! Eye bugging out. Hands splayed. He/she might choke or spill milk out of the sides of her/his mouth. He/she might be gassy after finishing the bottle. If this happens, you will want to either try a slower-flow nipple for that bottle brand or try a completely different bottle brand. ⭐How much milk should I put in each bottle?⭐ One way to figure this out is to go to a breastfeeding support group and weigh your baby before and after a nursing session. That’s a great amount to leave in the bottle. Otherwise, most babies in the first 3-6 weeks take about 2-3oz per bottle. Click the link in the bio to get more tips when it comes to bottle-feeding your baby. #lactationstation #sandiegobreastfeeds #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #bodyfeeding #normalizenormalbodies #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingsupport #lactation #classes #newbaby

That has been the million dollar question of the week. ⁣ Since Rachel Cautero published her article in the Atlantic last week about this topic, conversations about tethered oral tissue (TOTs) have had a resurgence of epic proportion. To discuss this topic, I was interviewed by Meghan Chakrabarti on NPR’s On Point this week. Her interview, entitled To Improve Breastfeeding, Babies Get Their Tongues Clipped. Is it necessary?, included the Atlantic journalist (Rachel Cautero), a pediatric ENT from John Hopkins (Dr. Jonathan Walsh), and me, an IBCLC from San Diego. What I would like to share are the most pertinent points about tethered oral tissue (TOTs) that were shared in this interview, as well as a few more that weren’t shared due to time constraints. ⭐TETHERED ORAL TISSUE CAN RESTRICT RANGE OF MOTION IN THE TONGUE, LIPS, AND CHEEKS ⭐INTERNATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED LACTATION CONSULTANTS (IBCLCS) IDENTIFY TETHERED ORAL TISSUE AT A HIGHER RATE THAN PEDIATRICIANS/ENTS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE PROFESSIONALS COMPLETING FULL ORAL/FEEDING ASSESSMENTS. ⭐THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE OF IDENTIFICATION OF AND RECOMMENDATION TO RELEASE TETHERED ORAL TISSUE IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, WITH GOOD REASON ⭐THERE IS A LACK OF EVIDENCE SPECIFICALLY STUDYING THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF TETHERED ORAL TISSUE (TOTS) Click the link in the bio to read the full blog and get more wisdom regarding tongue and lip functions. #lactationstation #sandiegobreastfeeds #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #bodyfeeding #normalizenormalbodies #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingsupport #lactation #classes #newbaby

took my babes to the park {solo} today! this was our first time venturing to the park just the three of us, I’ve been too nervous previously… but it went great!! We already can’t wait to go back :) here are a few things that helped make today a success! • 5 tips for going to the park with 2 under 2 • ▫️ go early - we got there before anyone else and it was perfect for us! ▫️allow them to be kids… the slides were wet, but B wanted to go down… so he did! Kids are washable, allow them to play and get dirty! {but bring extra blankets for a dry ride home} ▫️bring lots of snacks, everyone is going to want to eat…I brought homemade oatmeal balls and a pouch I made for B! Don’t forget to bring a snack for you too Mama! ▫️keep it simple and see where the fun takes you! Once Suri woke up I put her in our @babybjorn carrier and wore her so we could all play together! ▫️don’t have a time limit {at least at first}… this really helped us! Knowing we didn’t have to rush back or leave before he was ready. We played for just over an hour, then was more than happy to hop back in the stroller for snack time. Not having a time limit lowered my stress, allowed us all to have a relaxed snack and diaper change before heading home. what are some tips you have for going to the park with 2 under 2?? lmk 👇🏼

It was a mess of a day. . I was running late. . I had nothing to wear that would allow me to expose my baby belly and look good with the only decent dress shoes I had to wear with tights. (Because I thought it would be selfish for me to shop for me.) . Timing was bad for The Girl because she was tired and hungry, and the photo shoot was 35 minutes away. . 14 years later…..it brings me to tears because it’s so freaking beautiful. . The dress was perfect, and the fact that I thought it looked ridiculous with tights and heels didn’t hurt *anyone.* . The compassionate photographer was able to take the next person who had arrived early so my tardiness didn’t affect her. . And Angel Pie fell asleep in the car and was all snuggly when she woke. . Mamas, get over yourself. While our kids might not remember the specific events of the morning, we know that they feel our energy, and we know that @thebodykeepsthescore . . You don’t need anyone to tell you to “get in the picture.” . You need a village that can help you to do it without losing your mind (and therefore, your ideals for rearing your family.) . How do I know? Because I need that, too, and I’m here to help create it. Reach out if you’re tired of going it alone. The village wants you in it. Get over yourself and let people help you so your little ones can see and feel the best you there is, and so you can know her again, too. . . . . . #thebodykeepsthescore #tandemnursing #attachmentparenting #breastfeedingphotography #extendednursing #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #normalizebreastfeeding @danajacksonphoto

Weaning Consultation⁣ 60-MINUTE VIRTUAL CONSULTATION - STARTING AT $125 **If this fee is unaffordable, we have a foundation that provides reduced-fee consultations. Please contact our office for more information ([email protected]).** This consultation should take place before a nursing parent wants to wean their baby from nursing or wean their body off of the pump. There is no “appropriate” age to wean your baby or stop pumping and it completely depends on each individual family’s situation. These appointments are based on how quickly nursing parents want to wean. We will review how to help your child transition to fewer breastfeeding sessions (or your body transition to fewer pumping sessions) and how to decrease your milk supply safely. We are proud to be able to accept many insurance options. We are offering in-office and virtual appointments at this time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We of course recommend reaching out for help when you are struggling. But did you know many of our clients treat their appointments like checkups or well-checks?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We often find many families have lots of questions in the first few weeks when things are new and different, around 3-4 months as babies tend to get very distracted at this time, and around 6-7 months when solids are generally introduced. In addition, many of our clients check in when returning to work, weaning, or if there are any other big changes planned for the future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are happy to see many insurance companies are meeting the needs of lactating families. These visits, whether struggling or just having general questions, being covered by insurance is so needed and should be regular offerings for all insurance companies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you do not see your insurance listed here or are struggling to be seen or get the support you need through your insurance, please reach out. 🎉Chest/Breastfeeding Tip Tuesday🎉⁣ One of the most challenging aspects of supplementing your chest/breastfed baby is knowing when and how you can reduce or completely stop that supplementation. You will want to work with your pediatrician and an IBCLC to help fine-tune this process for you and your baby, but here are some general guidelines. The reason you were supplementing may determine when you can stop Early supplementation in the first few days after your baby is born may have been recommended to help resolve a temporary medical situation, such as jaundice, hypoglycemia, or excessive weight loss. Typically, once your milk supply has fully ‘come in’ and baby is gaining well, supplementation can stop. Longer-term supplementation, such as for a premature baby, baby with feeding challenges, or a breastfeeding parent working to increase milk supply, will likely require a longer weaning process. In both cases, though, watching the baby for signs of effective breastfeeding will be an important part of baby's care. Click the link in the bio to read the full blog. An Overview of Breastfeeding Breast milk has three different and distinct stages: colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk. Colostrum; Colostrum is the first stage of breast milk. It occurs during pregnancy and lasts for several days after the birth of the baby. It is either yellowish or creamy in color. It is also much thicker than the milk that is produced later in breastfeeding. Transitional milk; Transitional milk occurs after colostrum and lasts for approximately two weeks. The content of transitional milk includes high levels of fat, lactose, and water-soluble vitamins.  It contains more calories than colostrum. Mature milk; Mature milk is the final milk that is produced. 90% of it is water, which is necessary to keep the infant hydrated. The other 10% is comprised of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which are necessary for both growth and energy. 📷 @jessicahendersonphotography #themilkboosteruk #breastcrawl #newmom #labourstory #pumpingmom #breastfeeding #milkmaker #milksupply #firsttimemommy #breastfeedingmum #nursingmum #breastfeedingsolution #lactationcookies #lactationtea #lactationgranola #breastfeedingsupport #ukmoms #breastfeedingproblems #parenthood #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #lactationcookiesinuk #babiesofinstagram #preggo

Our lactation consultants not only assist with chest/breastfeeding support, but also provide education on pumping, donor milk, milk banks, tongue ties, and formula usage. If you are struggling to provide enough human milk to feed your child, please don't hesitate to reach out to us! We would be honored to support you!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Full Review: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "I am so glad I found Vicky with SDBC . She has been AMAZING! I was really struggling with my breastfeeding due to baby's latch issues and my supply, and after a few appointments with her things are heading in the right direction! She created a thorough plan for us, checked in with us multiple times, and made adjustments along the way. Without her I probably would've given up on breastfeeding and I'm so happy I didn't. Her encouragement and support meant so much :)"⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #lactationstation #sandiegobreastfeeds #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #bodyfeeding #normalizenormalbodies #normalizebreastfeedinginpublic #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingsupport #lactation #classes #newbaby

#MONDAYMAGIC⁣ “It’s so wonderful that your baby wants to nurse so often!” Many nursing parents worry that constant feedings mean they’re not producing enough milk, but what you might not know is babies don’t just nurse for nutrition.
