My fridge is full! My tulips, ranunculus, and my anemones have entered their cooling period. The tulips will stay in there for 6-8 weeks and the ranunculus and anemones will stay in there for 3-5 weeks. Word around the growers is that it has been a pretty tough Dahlia season with prolific bugs, strange growth patterns, late bloomers, rot, diseaseโฆ you name it weโve had it! These bright mixed Zinnia buckets were giving me all the fairytale vibes last week. Did you know that we supply DIY buckets so that you can arrange your own event flowers or bouquets? One of the reasons I started this business six years ago, was that I needed a reliable supply of cut flowers, and couldn't find any in Whanganui. Ours are grown mostly from seed or propagated from cuttings, without harmful chemicals, and with minimal soil disturbance. One of the best crops we grew this season would have to be Marigolds. Big fluffy luscious heads on strong stems, they have coped so well with the hot dry weather, bugs and whatever else this intense summer has thrown their way, they have thrived on our no-till farm and just keep producing beautiful blooms. Also HOT TIP if youโre not keen on the smell remove the leaves, the flowers actually have a very soft floral fragrance and itโs the leaves which are pungent. I kept putting off the important job of staking the dahlias due to bad prioritising, and last weeks storm knocked over a few of the tallest dahlias. Lesson learned! ๐ผ Seeds!!! It seems to be at the forefront and top of discussions at the moment with @floretflower recently releasing their beautiful new seed varieties and as weโre all starting to think about Autumn sowing. Not to mention the whopping big order I just placed at the seed merchant ๐ ๐ซฃ๐ฌ yikes now this is definitely feeling like a business and not a hobby farm as someone likes to refer to itโฆ โค๏ธ๐ A few weeks ago I had a go at collecting Antirrhinum/Snap Dragon seed from some of the colours I really liked over the season. Having the extra space to allow plants to go to seed has been so satisfying. Itโs been so nice not having to rush to rip out old plants and replace with new, taking away some of the stress and pressure and allowing me to experiment with seed collecting. Snaps are surprisingly easy to collect seed from, when the pods are brown and have little open holes at the end you can pick them off and literally shake or pour the seed out. I found this a bit tedious and in the end just crushed the pods between my fingers. With the arrival of February and school returning, it can feel like summer is over especially as a southern gardener as I have to start planning and sowing for next season already, just as my summer flowers start arriving.
