Fully assembled, mostly wired (some of it is temporary), and without bridges (still veneering one side) but I had a chance to audition these today. Wow. My testing location was not ideal which really narrows the soundstage, but still amazing. Present, revealing, spacious, with good imaging. Now I just need to find the right location in the house to open up the soundstage and tighten up the imaging. These definitely don’t need subwoofers! I’m now an #openbaffle guy. #hifi

Temporary baffle panels complete♠️ The cheap plywood cleaned up nicely with heavy sanding and a coat of black dye. The Hawthorne Audio drivers are bolted to walnut panels and then those panels are rear mounted to the baffles with a 1/2 inch piece of Sonic Barrier foam sandwiched between. As I mentioned in my previous post, the plywood is recycled from the previous owner's massive DIY baffles. The driver hole is a bit too big, so you can see some of the isolation foam peaking through, but otherwise I am happy with the appearance of these baffles. They are certainly a fine temporary solution until I find the time to glue up some solid walnut or cherry baffles. But in the meantime, I want to get working on two amp projects that have been in the queue for a while. Dry fitting some temporary plywood baffles for my newly acquired Hawthorne Audio Silver Iris 15" coaxial drivers. I recently acquired these along with a pair of Hawthorne Audio Auggie subwoofers from a local FB Marketplace seller for a crazy good deal. The seller had the drivers in a pair of diy open baffle obelisks that were far too imposing in my small living room (as you can see in the third pic). I recycled the cheap plywood and chopped the baffles down to fit my walnut modular open baffle frames. The drivers themselves are mounted to a small solid walnut panel which fastens to the back of the baffle. I have sandwiched a sheet of acoustic damping foam in-between the walnut panel and the plywood baffle in an attempt to decouple the driver and baffle. The cheap plywood is a temporary solution while I decide whether I want to veneer another baffle or do a solid hardwood baffle. I'm leaning towards solid hardwood (probably walnut), but the appeal of an exotic veneer is hard to resist (Bolivian rosewood, anyone?). The modular open baffle system is complete✨ With my newly acquired Hawthorne Audio Silver Iris drivers in mind, I designed the frames to accommodate up to 15" drivers. The frames are made of solid walnut harvested from southern Pennsylvania, which makes them quite heavy. Baffle panels can be easily swapped by loosening the 4 bolts on each frame's crossbars with a hex key. This allows for minimal hassle when changing drivers. Very happy with how these turned out! I am in the process of constructing solid walnut baffle panels for my Silver Iris drivers, which I'll be excited to share soon. I made inserts for the silly big open baffles and stuck the Akai/Foster drivers in to see what difference it made from the small boxes. Apparently a good decision. After a couple of hours they woke up in the middle of a Yusuf Lateef record. Not much below 150hz but that’s why we have subs.
