#Nowspinning "The Tortured Poets Department," the latest album from #TaylorSwift . She's been quite prolific. I only started listening to her music during the pand3m1c, starting with 2020's "Folklore." Then I started exploring her back catalog. It helped that she started re-recording some of her early albums after getting away from her old record label. Can't say that I'm a fan of the sound of those early albums. I definitely like the more mature sound of the modern albums, starting with "Folklore." Her music isn't meant for me, and I don't connect to it, but I appreciate the talent that she is. It makes me laugh all the negative comments I hear from middle aged men (some at work) whenever she's mentioned in media. They aren't even her target audience. No, her music isn't like Pink Floyd's. But it's also not meant to be. Her audience doesn't care if it is or isn't. That's not the point. They also always claim that she'd be nothing if her father didn't invest $300K at the beginning. Well, she was a teenager. Where was she supposed to get that money? And so what? What parent wouldn't help their child if they could? Never mind the fact that she continued to write songs and compose music to sell millions of albums since, built an amazing fan base, built a business empire, and became a billionaire. If she wasn't successful they would deride her. Now they're criticizing her because she's too successful. Prince and Batman, was a complete miss that was. An album that ended up in the discount bins in no time. Even the sticker on this copy indicates that: 5 DKK, which at that time was worth less than half a euro. But also: while Prince (also in my opinion, not just the critics) completely missed the vibe of the film, and created a Prince album, not a soundtrack, the album is actually fantastic. And that's a hill I will die on. Electric Chair has a mean groove and a growling guitar, The Future has a serious beat, and Partyman will never make me not want to move. Batdance is actually a fantastic blend of different beats and perfectly chosen samples from the film. You can even sense the nascent rhythms of what would drive Diamonds and Pearls. You can already hear early echoes of what Gett Off from that album ended up being. And to close: The Arms of Orion is a lovely typical late 80s duet/ballad. So, what's not to like? TL;DR Excellent Prince album, shitty film soundtrack.
