Epidendrum anceps is known as the "Dingy-flowered star orchid." I take offense to this name because nothing about it is dingy. It's a gorgeous epiphytic orchid native to South Florida, the West Indies, and Central and South America. It's difficult to tell from my pictures, but in order to see this orchid in the wild in South Florida, you have to tred through knee deep-thigh deep, tannic swamp water for several hours. 3 native Spiranthes species have been blooming in Florida this autumn. Can you tell them apart? 1. Marsh ladies' tresses Spiranthes odorata. This Spiranthes is fragrant at night and it grows in wet, soggy soil. I sunk deep into the muck while photographing it. It has a light yellow spot on the lip. The flowers are noticeably larger than the other two species when you see them in person. In the first video of this post, you can see a Zebra longwing butterfly nectaring on the S. odorata. My boyfriend and I were stoked to witness a pollinator on an orchid since that is such a rare sight. 2. Panther ladies' tresses Spiranthes triloba. This Spiranthes grows in damp soil with lots of leaf litter. It also can be seen growing together with grasses. A key characteristic of this species is having green on the lip. It used to be considered a green variation of odorata, but is now considered its own species. 3. October ladies' tresses. Spiranthes ovalis. This was a new find for me this year. I found this species growing in leaf litter on a slope with limestone close to the surface. Florida is home to three species of leafless epiphytic orchids, with the ghost orchid being the most famous. What about the other two? When not in bloom, the roots of each of them look very similar, but there are some key differences 1. Dendrophylax lindenii - Ghost orchid (Pictures 1 through 5). The ghost orchid has dashed lines along the roots called pneumatodes. 2. Dendrophylax porrectus - Jinglebell orchid. (Pictures 6 and 7). The jinglebell orchid has much smaller roots than the other leafless epiphytic orchids and no pneumatodes either. 3. Campylocentrum pachyrrhizum - Ribbon orchid (Picture 8 through 10). The ribbon orchid and ghost orchid look strikingly similar, yet the ribbon orchid has flatter looking roots and also no pneumatodes. In picture #10 you can actually see small leaves of the ribbon orchid which appear in the early stages of development. They eventually lose those leaves and remain leafless. Giant orchid - Orthochilus ecristatus I found these giants in a recently burned sandhill, which is a characteristic of this species. They love a fresh burn! I added two Phalaenopsi to my collection. I'm going to attempt to grow these outside all year and bring them in during temporary cold snaps. They were outside under a shade cloth when I bought them so thankfully they were already acclimated to the heat. It's funny that Phals are the most popular and beginner friendly orchid, yet I struggle with them the most. They either get black rot on the leaves or stem or crown rot when I grow them outside. When I try growing them inside they stay too wet and the roots rot. I just can't win 😅. Cranefly orchid Tipularia discolor When I first found this population in mid February, only the leaves were visible (slides 9 and 10). The one green side and one purple side leaves (where the name discolor comes from) appear in late fall and last through winter. They photosynthesize during this time and store nutrients in their underground corms. Then the leaves die back and out of the earth, a leafless inflorescence pops up in late summer. Ghost Orchid - Dendrophylax lindenii. I battled hordes of mosquitoes, thickets of poison ivy, and dodged torrential downpours and thunderstorms (sometimes unsuccessfully) to see a blooming ghost orchid for the first time. I love the name ghost orchid, but I think Spider orchid is a good nickname because of its leafless nature and the pattern in which the roots cling to the tree. This is a mystifying orchid that I cherish being able to see. Unfortunately, the ghost orchid is a state listed endangered species in Florida due to habitat loss and poaching. Just last year, poachers were caught stealing ghost orchids and other rare plants in South Florida. Scientists and activists want the ghost orchid to be federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. Crested coralroot orchid - Bletia spicata. Bletia spicata is a myco-heterotrophic orchid native to North America and Mexico. Myco-heterotrophic means it obtains its nutrients from a fungal relationship with mycorrhiza fungi. It primarily lives its life underground and has no need to photosynthesize because it gets all of its energy from the fungi. You would never even know it's there until it blooms, which can be sporadic depending on rainfall and other factors. This is one of my absolute favorite native orchids and I was thankful to finally catch it in bloom for the first time this year. These pictures are from a couple weeks ago. All signs of this orchid are gone now besides the one remaining inflorescence and the two developing seed pods. Calopogon tuberosus var. tuberosus blooming in Goethe State Forest. Calopogon are terrestrial orchids known as grasspinks because of their grass like leaves and pretty pink flowers. In Florida, we have 5 different species, with this one being the most common and widespread. Calopogon flowers are unique because they are upside-down. Someone once told me that they look like aliens. Like many orchids, Calopogon are thought to be pollinated by bees. When I first started growing orchids, I thought of them as being from tropical, far away places. I was shocked to learn we have around 106 species of native orchids in Florida. My goal is to see them all! I've seen close to 30 within the past couple years. Many of our native orchids and other rare plants are endangered and threatened due to habitat loss. The first few images are Spiranthes vernalis I believe and I think the last few smaller Spiranthes are Spiranthes praecox since they are much smaller and have way less flowers. Regardless, every Spiranthes species is a delight to see! Spiranthes orchids can be found across Peninsular Florida in a variety of habitats. I've found them in Pine flatwoods, fields, and roadsides. Ionopsis utricularioides in situ. I've been growing Ionopsis in my personal orchid collection for a couple of years, but that doesn't compare to finding a blooming one deep in the swamps of South Florida. I was delighted to see a blooming one for the first time recently. It's known as the delicate violet orchid because of how small and dainty the purple flowers are. Also, it favors growing on thin branches and essentially twigs. I found multiple plants on the ground because the fragile branches they were on fell down. Cowhorn orchid - Cyrtopodium punctatum. This is an orchid native to South Florida, the Caribbean, and South America. It is a state listed endangered species in Florida. While it is our largest native orchid, it's also one of the rarest. Habitat loss and poaching have caused its numbers to plummet. No one really knows how many remain in the wild in South Florida. There are efforts to repopulate this orchid, but it's not an easy task. Many of them that were reintroduced sadly did not survive. Orchids are very tough yet delicate. They survive in extremely harsh conditions. In South Florida, they face periods of torrential rains and sometimes hurricanes followed by months of intense heat and drought. I'm thankful I was able to see one in bloom for the first time a couple weeks ago. This one had approximately 60 pseudobulbs and 16 inflorescences! It is a massive and healthy specimen that's likely older than me. Native orchid in situ - Eltroplectris calcarata. This is my favorite of our native terrestrial orchids. It is described as looking like an egret in flight. Not much is blooming in my orchid collection right now, but some of our Florida native orchids are in full bloom. This orchid is endangered in Florida but is apparently secure in the Caribbean as well as Central and South America. Habitat loss is the primary reason that many of our rare orchids and plants are endangered. My seasonal greenhouse is so much more open now that I took out so many infested orchids. The majority of my Cattleyas have/had Boisduval scale. Tons of rain and having way too many orchids crammed into my relatively small growing space created mold and pest issues. It's made me rethink a lot of things. I would like my greenhouse a little bigger to increase air circulation but I also prefer having a smaller collection I think. I'm honestly just afraid to buy many more orchids since my collection took a serious hit. Oncidium Rosy Sunset 'F' rebloom. I had a serious problem with mold and scale this summer so about half of my orchids are looking very sad right now. My Oncidium Rosy managed to put out some flowers though despite being kept bare root! They smell nice and sweet and have a lovely salmon color. I manually removed some with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol then also treated with a neem oil spray. I found more infested and will treat the rest. I also intend to use soap and treat them all. I bought it online in December. I've been trying to buy as many natives as I can. Be careful buying from just anyone though. I rearranged my "greenhouse" and it feels so much more open. I remove the visqueen in summer because it would get way too hot in there. I removed the old metal stand because it was falling apart. Now that I have most of my orchids hanging I like it much more! Most of my big Cattleya's are on the plant stand in the second picture. I grow my Phalaenopsis indoors in the third picture. I tried for a few years without success to grow them outside. I just couldn't find enough shade for them and they would get burned or they would get fungus from the rain. It's known as the clamshell orchid but I think it looks like a squid or octopus🐙 🦑. I've been growing this orchid for 3 years now and it reblooms for me every year and with more flowers each year. I purchased it at the Jacksnville orchid show in 2019. I live in North Florida and I protect it from frost during winter. The rest of the year it's grown in a hanging basket under trees in dappled light and sometimes direct sun. It gets lots of water with our summer rains. Encyclia randii var. alba rebloom. I've had this orchid for a year now and it rebloomed nicely. The picture that I posted of it last year is one of my most liked posts and I can see why. It's such a striking orchid! The contrast between the bright green and white is very eye catching. Encyclias grow very well in my climate and this one is no exception. I remember hearing that you should grow them like a Cattleya and that is true, but I find that they seem to like more water than Catts. A few days after fully opening the flowers got attacked by what seems to be a fungus. Oh well! It happens when you grow outdoors, especially in a warm and often rainy climate like Florida. Orchid spotlight: "Downy Rattlesnake plantain orchid" Goodyera pubescens NOT oblongifolia. Thankfully I was corrected! Both species are native to North America and look very similar. This terrestrial orchid species is native to Eastern North America from Quebec all the way down to North West Florida. It is found in moist or dry forests with lots of leaf litter for moisture retention. I've been growing this species for about two months now. It has adapted well to my climate and is performing better than most of my other orchids. I grow it similar to my Macodes petola or any jewel orchid. Though I think this can withstand more heat and light than jewel orchids, based on what I've seen so far. I have them potted in potting soil with bark mixed in for better air flow. I also planted some in the oak hammock on my property. Those are doing equally well! I have one pot growing indoors and two outdoors under the overhang of my roof receiving bright indirect light. I highly recommend any North American growers to try growing this beautiful species! As with any native orchid or rare plant, be sure to buy from reputable sellers. Native orchid find: Bearded grasspink, Calopogon barbatus. I saw this beautiful and smaller than I imagined grasspink orchid over the weekend. It was so small and delicate looking amongst the grass. I saw it growing in a wet savanna. This makes 8 native orchids so far!!! Sadly native orchids are becoming increasingly rare due to habitat loss and poaching. They grow incredibly slow and cannot easily grow back if they are disturbed. Orchids taken from the wild almost always die. Seeing a plant in its native habitat is very rewarding. Native orchid find: Corallorhiza wisteriana - Spring Coral Root. I found this neat leafless orchid while exploring some moist woods in Central Florida. It's saprophytic which means it relies on mycorrhiza fungi for nutrients. It only photosynthesizes when it blooms. Most of the growing takes place underground.
