Orchid hunting - Orchis x hybrida (Orchis purpurea x Orchis militaris) This is a naturally occurring hybrid between the lady orchid and the military orchid. I checked out a location a couple weeks ago where i saw one of these in bud and i was considering going back to see it in bloom. I'm so glad i finally decided to go back. It was my first time seeing these hybrids in real life and they are so much more interesting than on the photos. They are just as tall as a purpurea but have a much brighter pink colour instead of purple. The shape and pattern of the flowers vary. The photos were taken on 2024.04.25. #plantropiaorchidhunt

Praecoxanthus aphyllus in portrait. A lovely fresh specimen I found yesterday. The Leafless orchid is closely related to Spider orchids but has some significant feature differences such as not having a visible leaf ( they do have leaves but generally only on non flowering plants) Their labellum calli are also significantly larger than most Caladenia and their tepals are more stiffly held making them great subjects to photograph! Orchid hunting - Neotinea tridentata / Three-toothed orchid / Tarka pettyeskosbor On Friday i visited a nice N. tridentata habitat i found last year only to be greeted by flowers that were wrecked from the morning frost from the day before and the scorching sun from the previous days. It was quite upsetting but fortunately on Saturday i visited another location that was new to me, where most of the flowers were unharmed by the weather. I took a million photos. They all kinda look the same but i love the subtle differences of colour and pattern and even shape of the petals. This orchid lives on dry and sunny rocky (dolomite or limestone) meadows. In Hungary it normally blooms in early May but this year it started 2-3 weeks earlier due to the unusually hot weather. #plantropiaorchidhunt

Here's Ophrys lutea (Yellow Bee Orchid) from January. The labellum looks especially insect-like when you flip the photo upside-down, which makes you wonder how male bees align themselves when they attempt to mate with the flower. It's a bit unfortunate that this one is slightly past its prime, as the glossy metallic "wings" are quite stunning when fresh. I used to grow this species before I headed off for college (T_T), so it was quite amazing to see it in the wild. Very different conditions than how I was keeping it; this was growing in much damper/clayier soil. Happy National Orchid Day 2024! In my opinion all orchids are beautiful, but Disa uniflora is simply one of the most captivating and spectacular species in South Africa. Their large, bright red flowers is not only wondrous to behold; these plants are also quite fascinating to learn about. D. uniflora is endemic to the very southern tip of Africa. Most notably, they can be found in large numbers on Table Mountain, probably SA’s most famous mountain. Hence one of their common names, The Pride of Table Mountain. Another interesting aspect of this orchid is that they completely rely on a single pollinator species: the Mountain Pride Butterfly (Meneris tulbaghia). The genus Disa is presumed to be named after princess Disa, a heroine in a Swedish legend. Princess Disa was known for her wit and beauty. According to the legend, she presented herself to King Freyhr wearing only a fishnet (the background to how this unusual meeting came about is rather lengthy, but very interesting nonetheless). It is thought that this name is a reference to the net-like pattern on many Disa species’ flowers. I had to travel quite a few hours to see them as they only grow in the area of Mecsek. Unfortunately most of them were still in bud and we only found a few fully opened specimens. Eulophia maculata, ex Oeceoclades maculata é uma orquídea naturalizada no Brasil, terrícola, cespitosa e simpodial com raízes carnosas, fasciculadas, com velâmen. Seu pseudobulbo apicalmente unifoliados, heteroblásticos, elipsóides, coriáceos, levemente comprimidos lateralmente, cobertos por 2-3 bainhas membranáceas de ápice acuminado, adpressas. Orchid hunting - Dactylorhiza sambucina / Elder-flowered orchid / Bodzaszagú ujjaskosbor Another yellow orchid from the weekend. 💛 Despite its hungarian name the orchid has no scent at all. 😅 These grew in abundance at a beautiful and species rich location. I probably saw hundreds of them. Unfortunately a lot of them were already past their prime blooming time which is really sad considering it is only the beginning of April and they usually peak a few weeks later. I fear that this year the season will be exceptionally short due to the sudden high temperatures that we are experiencing here. #plantropiaorchidhunt
Tall ladies tresses (Cyclopogon elatus). This terrestrial orchid is very rare in South Florida. Thankfully, the sweat bees that pollinate it are doing a great job in keeping this species going. C. elatus wasn't even known to exist in Fakahatchee until 2009; probably because the habitats it grows in are very difficult to access. It takes hours of trudging through tannic swamp water, climbing over fallen trees, and trying to avoid slamming your shins on cypress knees. Even then, you still may not find it. Ryan put in the hard work to find this beauty. We went back to check on them at the perfect time and were blessed to see them in bloom. They may not be as vibrant as some of our other orchid species, but they are still very striking and resilient. The way that they grow also makes them vulnerable. Orchid hunting - Orchis pallens / Pale flowered orchid / Sápadt kosbor What a start to this year’s orchid season! I’ve seen 5 species during the weekend and 2 of those were new to me. One is pictured here. I really wanted to see a yellow orchid this year and my wish was granted! Spoiler: this wasn’t the only yellow orchid species I saw. O. pallens might not be as showy as some others in Hungary but i just adore yellow orchids so for me it is quite special. In addition to this it has a beautiful elderflower fragrance. I had the privilege of witnessing these plants on 2 entirely different locations this weekend. The habitat where these pictures were taken is absolutely breathtaking. A little gem in an area not frequented by hikers. So much so that i had really close encounters with a fox and several huge deers. What an experience to take home! #plantropiaorchidhunt

Some super cool finds from the other day, native orchids! 1st species and probably coolest find of the day is Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis. This species has an amazing flower, and the one I saw was actually blooming too, so I got to see the flower! It was super cool looking. The leaves also had a really cool netted veneition thing going on, which reminds me of some Lepanthes species. 2nd find was a whole bunch of Goodyera oblongifolia! They weren't in flowers, but that was okay because the impressive part about them are their amazing leaves! As opposed to only seeing two of the Calpyso orchids, there were TONS of little Goodyeras all around. Most were pretty small but I did find a couple good sized ones, the largest of which is in the picture. A great looking specimen of Phalaenopsis gigantea grown by @reptile_and_plant_guy_sa . As the name suggests, this is a truly giant growing epiphytic species, with the leaves growing to over 60cm in lenth. It is the largest growing species of Phalaenopsis. Native to Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Malaysia, and Borneo it is considered to be one of the most poached orchids in the word, having been pushed to the very brink of extinction in the wild, also taking into account that this is a slow growing species and it is estimated that it can take over 10 years to reach maturity in the wild. Mist often found in lowland swamp forests. Flowers are 5cm across, and cream in colour with raised red brown splotches, the older the specimens are the bigger the flower spikes they produce, with very old specimens producing an inflorescence over 40cm long, branched and covered in blooms that has a citrus like fragrance. Target species found! Malaxis unifolia (Green adder's mouth orchid). Ryan and I looked for this orchid a few weeks ago, but we were too soon to see it. The area that we explored that day stood out to me, and I knew I needed to check one more time. I hiked 5 miles at another location looking for it, but I didn't end up finding it there. I went to this site again and still didn't see it. I was about to call it a day when I decided to look for another orchid that we already knew about. As I was leaving, I stepped next to the Malaxis without realizing it. When I did, it made it shake a little which caught my attention. I looked down and started freaking out because it was right there all along. It's much smaller than it appears and is easily overlooked. I have posted these pretty orchids in the past, identified as Esperance china orchids, however recently they have been separated into a new subspecies of china orchid, specific to this one location. It is officially Habenaria season! In the first photo you can see them all together. Left/photo 2 is Habenaria transvaalensis. Center/photo 3 is Habenaria dives.
