Seattle—Day 1 I’m in Seattle visiting a client, @pacificnorthwestballet. Last night, as their guest, I attended one of the best evenings of dance I’ve ever experienced. There were three pieces choreographed by women—Twyla Tharp, @jessicalangchoreographer, and Crystal Pite. While they were each different, they complemented each other perfectly and together made a powerful impression. In @mccawhall , a venue I’ve been to many times, there is a new sculpture in the lobby. From below, it reminded me of a Rube Goldberg creation. Yesterday--wow! I got to witness the sublime, and final, performance of Pacific NW Ballet Star James Yoichi Moore in "The Calling," created by Jessica Lang. The program also included "Sweet Fields" by my idol Twyla Tharp (read her books too!), and "The Season's Canon" by the amazing Crystal Pite. A mind-blowing, heart-uplifting hour and a half! The Chihuly Bar afterwards was not only delicious (OMG the chocolate-stuffed mini beignets!!) but fun to be in, with the soaring ceilings strung with accordions at jaunty angles. Ah, it's April in Seattle... Next up: Kyle Davis, Principal Dancer with @pacificnorthwestballet! Kyle Davis received his initial dance training at the Makaroff School of Ballet in Wisconsin and attended the Rock School for Dance Education and the North Carolina School of the Arts on scholarship. He also attended summer courses on scholarship at the Milwaukee Ballet, School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. In addition to being a prize winner at the 2008 Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland, Davis had won various awards in the Youth American Grand Prix Regional and Finals. He joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2008 and was promoted to corps de ballet in 2009, soloist in 2016, and principal in 2020. He has performed principal and featured roles in works by George Balanchine, Donald Byrd, Alejandro Cerrudo, David Dawson, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Jessica Lang, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Justin Peck, Crystal Pite, Alexei Ratmansky, Jerome Robbins, and Twyla Tharp – among others.
