Excited to share that the Seattle premiere of Now I Hold You Close will be accompanied by a live performance and sculpture collaboration. I met Dina Wilson through the Richmond Beach Art Cottage Residency that I participated in nearly two years ago. I’m so grateful that she invited me to have tea at her house after my show and shared her work with me. I was fascinated by how her sculptures related to the film I was making and how deeply we connected about art making. So I resolved to find a way for us to collaborate. Fortunately, I received the James Ray Residency Grant this year, which provided me with the opportunity to make this happen! We’re going to be spotlighting our talented writers over the next couple weeks. First up is @fox_whitney_! Fox Whitney is a performance maker, choreographer, dancer, musician, filmmaker, actor and writer. He started the psychedelic transfuturist band Light Aloud in 2023 and founded the interdisciplinary performance project Gender Tender in 2012. Both Light Aloud and GT engage a team of artists trained in Fox’s unique methods modeled on visual art practices, cults, riots and QT history and the surreal nature of transformation. Fox’s ongoing project, MELTED RIOT is the current focus of his interdisciplinary art making. MELTED RIOT uses tactics rooted in text, sound, dance, durational performance, and visual art to investigate the effects peaceful and violent forms of support and sabotage have on the bodies, minds, and spirits of the transgender and queer community. MELTED RIOT is a surreal protest song, a queer meditation, a psychedelic research project, a punk prayer. From the Archives | Wind of the Vast and Intimate 2022 Wind of the Vast and Intimate 2022 is inspired by the writings and music of composer John Luther Adams—2014 Pulitzer Prize winner for Become Ocean, commissioned by the Seattle Symphony. The dance had its world premiere at Seattle International Dance Festival in June 2022. It performed again in November of the same year at Yaw Theater for KSD’s event titled Two Dances and a Film. Wind of the Vast and Intimate 2022 is a soaring and beautiful meditation for three dancers on body and landscape, wind and breath, mountains and earth, intimacy and vastness. The choreography by Karin Stevens, draws many of its ideas from Adams’ writing about the music, The Wind In High Places, recorded by The Jack Quartet, in his autobiography, Silences So Deep: Music, Solitude, Alaska. The costumes in this performance, by Seattle designer Danielle Blackwell, further Karin Stevens’ interest in decentering the human to enhance the more-than-human dance of life. MEET THE 2024 FULL TILT CHOREOGRAPHERS! LUCIE BAKER Lucie Baker is a dance artist, educator and expressive arts facilitator based in Seattle, Washington. She began studying dance from a young age and her curiosity for movement led her to pursue a career as a professional performer and choreographer in New York City and abroad. In her training, she earned a BFA from the Juilliard School, an MFA from the University of Washington and kudos from her social dancing communities. After a decade of performing, creating, and teaching, she became interested in the intersection of dance and mental health and received her expressive arts therapy training at the Tamalpa Institute, founded by Anna and Daria Halprin. Her classes integrate her background in western concert dance and social dance with her love of somatics and anatomy. She is currently on faculty at Cornish College of the Arts, University of Washington, and Century Ballroom. She believes fiercely in the revolutionary power of expressive embodiment as a tool for personal and cultural transformation and is grateful to be a part of many dancing communities.
