The Vancouver Canucks were formed in 1945, first playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey League until 1952 when they joined the Western Hockey League. In 1970, after 25 seasons of minor league play, the Canucks joined the NHL as an expansion franchise along with the Buffalo Sabres. The Canucks won six minor league championships, two PCHL titles (1946 and 1948) and four WHL titles (1958, 1960, 1969 and 1970). The Canucks’ alumni include several standout players including NHL goaltending greats Gump Worsley (1953-54), Johnny Bower (1954-55), and Tony Esposito (1967-68). The Johnny Canuck logo originated in 1869 as a Canadian political cartoon and was portrayed as a younger cousin of the United States’ Uncle Sam. In the spirit of the holiday season, Hockey Logos Org once again presents our annual tradition: The 12 Days of Hockey Christmas Cards! Day 6: Seattle Eskimos (PCHL) 1929. A member of the short-lived Pacific Coast Hockey League, Seattle played home games out of the newly constructed Civic Ice Arena. Their first season would see the club finish in second place, though it would end in a heartbreaking loss to Vancouver in the 1929 league final. That would be Seattle's peak in the PCHL. They'd play two more years before financial issues & the start of the Great depression caused the league & its teams to fold in 1931. Team-issued Christmas cards in the 1920s were often quite subdued. Seattle does, however, put in some effort with a team photo which had hand-painted team colours added. The sentiment inside isn't all that spectacular, but just seeing something from this era is always incredible. Patch - San Francisco Shamrocks A modern patch recreated from a vintage poster (see 2nd photo) for the San Francisco Shamrocks. Playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey League from 1944 to 1950, there’s not a lot of info out there on the history of the Shamrocks outside of their season records, which were mediocre at best. The Winterland refers to the famous venue at the corner of Polk and Steiner in San Francisco the Shamrocks called home. Demolished in 1985, the Winterland is most notable as a music venue through the late 60s and 70s. The sponsor, Acme Beer, didn’t fair much better than the team, folding in 1954. * * ON THIS DATE * August 11th, 1949 * On his 35th birthday Rudy Pilous is named the new head.coach of the Louisville Blades of the USHL. * Pilous was apart of the Houston Huskies USHL championship in 1948. He was then apart of the San Diego Skyhawks PCHL championship in 1949. * Pilous became the head coach of the St.Catherines Teepees (OHA) starting in 1953-54. He won the Memorial Cup with the Teepees in 1954. The Teepees won again in 1960 and Pilous was the GM. The Teepes were in financial trouble and Chicago helped out in '61-'62. In 1962-63 they became known as the St.Catherines Black Hawks and remained as such until the team moved to Niagara Falls ('76-'77). * Tommy Ivan decided to step down as head coach of the Chicago Black Hawks during the 1957-58 NHL and concentrate solely on the role of GM. * Rudy Pilous was brought up from St.Catherines to take over the last place Black Hawks as head coach. * Pilous would eventually lead the Black Hawks to a Stanley Cup Championship in 1961. * Pilous was eventually relieved of his coaching duties and replaced by Billy Reay for 1963-64 NHL season. * Pilous was in California with the Seals of the WHL when the NHL expanded to 12 teams. Pilous was hired as the NHL Seals GM. However, Bert Olmstead got the ear of team President Frank Selke Jr. and had Pilous fired before the June 1967 expansion draft. Olmstead was made coach/GM. * Pilous was reunited with the Golden Jet, Bobby Hull in the WHA. He was the GM of the Winnipeg Jets from 1974 to 1978 & the head coach for the '74-'75 season. Pilous was part of Avco Cup championship teams in 1976, 1978 & 1979. * Rudolph 'Rudy' Pilous was elected into the hockey hall of fame in 1985. He was elected in the builders category. He was apart of just about every league championship around North America. * Sadly, Rudy Pilous passed away from a heart attack on Dec.5th, 1994. * Mr. Rudy Pilous was remembered as one of the great characters of the game of hockey. Player #5 Joey Johns was a former defenseman for the Tacoma Rockets from 1946-51. Johns earned all-star honors with the Rockets in 1948-49. He also won a City League Championship with the Tacoma Elks Club and eventually became a referee in the Western Hockey League for 18 seasons from 1952-70. Johns, a Winnipeg, Manitoba native, helped form a Tacoma high school league that lasted from 1948-50. Johns was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. The Rockets were a professional team that played in Tacoma from 1946 to 1953. After five seasons & relative success, the Portland Eagles of the Pacific Coast Hockey League decided it was time for a change. So in 1949 to the surprise of many, the club rebranded itself as the Portland Penguins. The move was for all intents and purposes, a glorified publicity stunt. Attendance had wavered the previous two seasons & ownership felt the name change would spark renewed interest from fans in Rose City. Unfortunately, the move hit the ground with a resounding thud. The club spent a lot of money acquiring "Mr. Perkins" a live penguin that was meant to serve as team mascot. The move turned into a publicity nightmare when during a pregame ceremony, a Portland player accidentally skated over Mr. Perkins foot, forcing him into early retirement. Not that anyone noticed. Beiing a .500 hockey club, attendance was still a problem & the team was sold at the end of the season to a new owner who swiftly changed their name back to Eagles. Much like the Pittsburgh Penguins logo 17 years later, Portland's brand is both fun & refreshing. The mark isn't too detailed but its instantly identifiable. The precursor to the old Western Hockey League, the Pacific Coast Hockey League operated from 1944-1953. A few of its teams originated from the Southern California Hockey League including the Hollywood Wolves. Already crowned Amateur Hockey Association of the United States - now USA Hockey - champions in 1944, the Wolves served as a partial affiliate to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Thanks to that association, players like future Stanley Cup hero Bill Barilko (pic 3) & others graced the Wolves lineup. Despite Hollywood being part of their name, the club actually played in LA & shared an arena with the Los Angeles Monarchs & Pasadena Panthers. Hollywood was decent on the ice & even reached the 1946 PCHL final where they were thumped by Vancouver. By 1947 it was obvious Tinseltown couldn't handle two teams anymore. LA had just won a championship & was getting far better gate than the Wolves. At the end of the 1946-47 season, Hollywood threw in the towel. As was commonplace in the 1940s, Hollywood used a wordmark as their primary logo. The word "Wolves" in cursive with the upper portion of the jersey littered with stars - it's Hollywood you see - looked pretty good on the whole. The 1940s & 50s were not eras known for branding. In fact, the term had yet to be coined when the Tacoma Rockets were scraped together in 1946. In post-war North America, pro sport was viewed as a way to ease anxieties & to the Pacific Coast Hockey League, make money. Tacoma just 51km from Seattle, was intended to be the Emerald City's biggest rival. But Portland ended up taking over in that role. The Rockets were by all accounts, an innocuous, middle-of-the-road team with little star power. Despite often finishing seasons in 2nd or 3rd place, they typically died in the first round of the playoffs. Rising costs & an economic downturn in Tacoma lead the Rockets to crash in 1953. As touched on earlier, branding was not a big thing in the 40s. Outside the NHL it was common for pro teams to create a logo but never place it on the team sweater. Tacoma's anthropomorphic rocket on skates is awesomely retro & falls into the "it's so bad, its good" category.
