Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks tonight (Sunday 8pm) to the west of Christchurch, New Zealand in Bortle 3 skies excepting the odd flash of car lights and unusually clear of clouds it seems! First images downloaded from tonight of many taken and my first attempt at anything other than widefield stars or auroras. These 7 stacked and roughly tracked light shots taken at 200mm (roughly as I can never align with any degree of accuracy) Exif 8s f/2.8 and iso 640. Another early cat alarm this morning, and some through the night! Brilliant! Luckily I’m an early person so I don’t mind. I found this small comet print and noticed how it’s the exact same colour as my bedroom walls. I do want to paint everything green but I tried this colour out and do like it. It’s been raining all night and still is, great for all my plants. Another new rose arrived yesterday and I can’t wait to plant it up properly. I grow lots of things in big pots and they do well. I’m very unrealistic with the space I have to grow things, as I like to pretend I have a big garden. My work table looks out onto the space so I want to grow things that I love and that I can gaze out at when I’m procrastinating. I keep forgetting to mention that I’m taking part in @supersecondsfestival again in a few weeks, I’ll definitely post more about it. COMETS have returned home from Houston, Texas, after a successful champs run. We ranked 17/75 with a qualifications record of 7-3 on the Hopper field, and we were invited to the 3rd alliance by 180 S.P.A.M., alongside 4909 Bionics and 108 SigmaC@T Robotics Team. Aside from the competition, our team made the most of our time by eating good food (@jbarmbbq), spending late nights playing games in the hotel, and attending RoboProm, among other things. We even saw Mark Rober at the convention center! And with that, the Crescendo season comes to a close. Some of the stunning images from a 16th-century treatise on comets, created anonymously in Flanders and known as The Comet Book (or Kometenbuch).⠀ ⠀ The book explores comets in terms of their perceived mysterious terrestrial effects, which as a rule firmly occupy the *disastrous* category ("disaster" being Latin for "bad star") — devastating fires, wrecking winds, bloodshed, pestilence, famines, and a fair few celebrity deaths. As any dinosaur would tell you, the association of comets and meteors with calamitous events are not entirely unfounded — one comet, named here “Veru” (depicted as a fiery lance) and now known as Swift-Tuttle, has been described as "the single most dangerous object known to humanity" (though the chances of it hitting Earth are still extremely small).⠀ ⠀ The stylised depictions of the comets echo the fantastical bent of the text — "Veru" as a lance, "Domina capillorum" as burning wheel, "Rosa" with beaming face, and "Scutella" as some kind of heavenly Asclepius’s staff. In the landscapes below which the comet's stream we see some evidence also of their perceived effects — for example, in the print for "Aurora", which was thought to be an omen of impending conflagrations, a city rages with fire. As the keen observer will note, fiery emissions are not limited only to the skies or burning cities. In the image for "Miles" — whose effects include an upset of social norms — a Bruegel-esque character can be spied defecating in the bottom right corner....⠀ ⠀ For a book about fiery apparitions, it is perhaps not entirely inappropriate to learn that this copy (held at the Universitätsbibliothek Kassel) comes to us today with some heat damage — not from comets but bombs. In Sep 1941, a hundred allied planes flattened Kassel in a raid in which 350,000 or so (almost 90%) of the State Library’s books and printed materials were destroyed. I’ve been working on a few new ideas but want to change them all again, and I think I just might. Have I wasted my time?! I am so much slower than I ever have been and the prints I want to do now will take more time. I think I’m still going to do some single block prints but I can feel that I now want to expand into colour and whole scenes within a block. I’m still trying to finish previous planned prints and am starting on a commission too. Is it me or does everything come at once? I’m also trying to quote up a large commission and it’s really tricky. I know what I need to quote but it’s so hard to get a good gauge of what others do because it seems like pricing is such a secretive area and one we don’t talk about. I’ve been watching a few videos of artists and illustrators discussing knowing your worth, and how under quoting for jobs just makes it harder for every other artist in the industry. And also how people don’t want to discuss their quotes incase they are completely off! In the past I’ve quoted for quite big commissions and have heard nothing back so I assume I’ve quoted too high. I was a member of the association of illustrators but recently ended my membership because I just wasn’t even using any of the resources…. If anyone knows of any good resources regarding pricing then do let me know!
