about this skirt: Geoffrey Beene and polished cotton (a fabric that i think is soooo neat and underrated) pix: 1982 this skirt/ad for it 1982 this skirt in white on the runway 1975 Beene runway looks: same skirt design/polished cotton big shirt 1981 Beene polished cotton look 1982 Beene polished cotton looks (2) Designer Beene had a strong affinity for using this particular shiny cotton fabric between 1975 and 1983, but peaking as a major part of his 1982 spring collections. Polished cotton, or cotton chintz, is a fabric with a coating or finishing that dates back to the Victorian era (or possibly further!). The finish was usually a resin, very lightly applied. it give the fabric some body, but retains all of the qualities of cotton. It's not waterproof, and looks almost like leather. It's really a STRIKING fabric, and, in the case of this skirt, looks kind of punk. The 1975 stuff was flowy, big-shirt looks, in earth tones, but by the time we hit his 1982 Beene Bag collection (which this skirt is from), it's more nautical/new wave looks. this 1982 skirt has smocked cartridge pleating (another detail started by Beene in 1975 specifically), is the BEST color of lipstick red, and has two pockets. 29" waist, in the etsy now.
