Why we advocate offering a variety of products to your teen (and yes that includes disposables!) I'm sure many of us can remember being handed a box of pads when we got our first period, and that was it! However, the menstrual products we use can have a huge impact on how we view and relate to our bodies. This impacts our health both mentally and physically. And not to mention the environmental impact these products can have over our lifetimes. Something our teens are increasingly aware of. As we tend to stick to the products we were introduced to as teenagers, it's important that we introduce teens to a variety of products early on. Giving them the opportunity to get hands-on with different products can also make it less scary when they do actually need to use them. Giving teens choices and autonomy over which products they choose to use to manage that periods can help them feel empowered at this time. Remember that this is a time of discovery and expiration and that as the adults what we model to our teens can have a huge impact on them. What we do say is just as important as what we don't say! WHAT 10 YEARS OF USING REUSABLES IS LIKE! I was lucky enough to switch to reusables fairly early on in my menstruating life but I still remember vividly how unpleasant using disposables were and how miserable it made me. So what’s it like 10 years down the line of using reusables? Here are some of the things that stand out to me. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had to buy products from the supermarket. And when I do end up wandering into the ‘feminine hygiene’ aisle I end up shocked at the price of tampons! 😱 It goes without saying, but there's no waste! The unpleasant task of emptying a bin full of blood soaked plastic disposables at the end of each period isn’t something I need to do now. If my period comes early, late or totally by surprise! It doesn't matter because I always have what I need. People don't believe me when I say this because there's this perception that using reusable pads is ‘hard work’, but switching to reusables makes you lazy when it comes to periods! 😂 You just get so used to not having to worry about it or having to remember to buy supplies etc. My periods aren’t a medicalised event. I didn’t realise till after I switched how clinical conventional products looked and how that made me feel about my body. With standard disposables made of 90% plastic. Every year in the UK alone, over 200,000 tonnes of waste is produced from disposable period products. 🌊 Turning the tide on period plastics 🩸 An estimated 500 million period pads end up in landfill each month. Made almost entirely of plastic, these single-use items are created from fossil fuel (plastic is made of crude oil) and can take up to a thousand years to decompose, contributing to climate change at every stage of their lifecycle - and far surpassing ours! 🤢 🦠Plastics in period products have been found to contain glyphosate (a carcinogen) that is also used as a weed killer; synergic fragrances, phthalates, volatile organic compounds, dioxins, parabens, and environmental phenols. These toxins leech into our waters and our environment… and, of course, our bodies too. 🦠 On average 4.8 pieces of menstrual waste are found per 100m of beach cleaned, and once plastic makes its way to the ocean, it decomposes very slowly, breaking into micro plastics which can enter the marine food chain and make our way back to us. 🎣 But there is a perfectly good solution! Period underwear works just like a pad, but when you’re done with it, you simply wash it and reuse it. When we’ll looked after, one pair of underwear can last up to five years, saving an estimated 1500-2000 pads from landfill! ♻️ Our cotton period underwear has been tested and certified to ensure that it’s free of forever chemicals. It’s more comfortable than a pad, but just as thin and just as absorbent. 🎉 We can’t wait to give you a sneak peak at our first samples soon!! An afternoon workshop @the_hurlingham_academy last week! All attendees were given a menstrual care pack, containing reusable products that can last up to a decade. 🩸Period poverty since covid and the cost of living crisis has increased dramatically. 🩸75% of menstruators reported prioritising food and heating over period products. 🩸46% of menstruators who have struggled to purchase period products admit to using them for longer than the recommended use time. 🩸In 2023 an estimated 4 million menstruators avoided or missed school because of their periods, in 2017 this was around 137,000.
