I’ve been really enjoying getting back into Lego with my kids, and I’ve recently discovered Bricklink Studio which lets me develop some designs digitally. As a big fan of the Lego Architecture range, it seemed only natural to attempt some mini studies of Norwich landmarks! First up, Norwich Market. Ford T Hot Rod I made this model in 1998. It is not a 3D model in the traditional sense. It was done in POV-Ray by writing code in a scripting language. All objects, materials, and the lighting of a scene are described in text format, which POV-Ray then renders (raytraces) into an image. A lot of work to write this as text... New Povray remake: This is from 2004 and I think you can see the advancement from 2002. Since organic shapes are a pain in the ass to do in Povray, I used the sPatch modeler which was next to Moray the only viable (free) option at that time. Luckily I still had a copy of it as well the original files. I could export the models of the can's lid and the umbrella directly into Blender (albeit it still was annoying to adapt for the different coordinate system) . For Povray it was converted into an endless string of numbers (last pic) . The guy is an old Poser Model which I already had as an obj file that can be easily imported. I used this model in a few projects already (usually as a smoker). For the re-imaged version I remodeled the umbrella, tweaked textures and added a bunch of stuff, dirt and dust to tell a little story and give the scene an explanation. I started with 3D stuff in the late 90s and the only free software then was the Povray raytracer. This Teddy is from 2002. In Povray you have to script the entire scene (pic 4) and blender (which I started 2.5 years ago after a loooong hiatus from 3D software) works entirely different, so remaking this made my brain hurt (for nerds: povray has a left handed coordinate system, Y is up, whereas Blender is right handed and Z is up). The remake was still too dull so I made a new scene how I would approach it today. And damn, it turned out super cute! 😍🐻 I have a few more OK-ish Povray pictures and I guess I'll remake a few more... #blender #b3d #teddy #cute #povray

3D raytraced playmat A huge project in the summer of 2021: Designing from scratch my own full 4x3 ft industrial playmat that could be rendered with a single execution in POV-Ray (as an orthophotography of the virtual world). It has hundreds of industrial tiles which are hovering above a maze of rusted pipes, visible through some of the tiles. The overall design has void spaces, railings, and catwalks. Each tile has several layered parameterized textures, and each one has semi-random definitions according to its position in the (x,y) grid and the internal clock of my computer. The whole thing has literally dozens of parameters, to rescale the overall size, the game scale, the tiles, their number, the tile decorations, etc. The pipes are a macro from the amazing digital artist #gillestran. I cannot recommend enough visiting his website www.oyonale.com . At full 9000x6600 pixels and maximum antialiasing the image took 2.2 days to render. Some experiments with POV-Ray 3.7. For those unaware, POV-Ray is one of the oldest actively developed ray tracing programs with origins that date back to the late 1980s.
