I'm working on a new series of Fibonacci Trees that will only use 90 degree angles. Here is the first one and samples of how I might finish it off. I like the first one best, but it isn't strong enough with just one layer of brix--it will definitely sag when it is hung. So I can either outline or shadow. I did this a few years ago for a competition where the only prompt was to produce a single drawing. I still think about this process all the time and I do think someday I’ll pick up this idea again. I’ve thought about different topics I could explore, how to take the math further to create more steps, or (stay with me here) drawing up an actual floor plan! To date it’s one of the most fun and useless projects I’ve done which is why I think it’s stuck with me and I haven’t stopped obsessing over it. From my portfolio: This fantasy building is an experiment in form-finding using a Cremona diagram, in a way completely unrelated to its originally intended purpose. Traditionally a structural engineering process used to find forces in members, here it instead inspires shape. These diagrams are nearly impossible to predict and the results often yield energetic web patterns. My inspiration for this activity came from the ribbon-like movement of connecting lines used here to represent folding earth (coincidentally, part of the study of structural geology), and also the perfect phrase describing Cremona diagrams as “Engineering’s Crystal.” The truss that yielded this figure is comprised of three different sets of essentially unit-less quantities, that are all taken from the earth’s “architecture.” The horizontal distances are a timeline of mass extinction events, the vertical heights are groups of the periodic table, and the applied loads are the widths of the earth’s layers. The building might function as a Museum of Geology, with exhibits leading out to the edges of cantilevered spaces and patios nestled in the cavernous central folds. #architecture #watercolor #graphicstatics #mathart #engineeringart #geologyart #structures #structuraldesign

Tentatively using the title “Clover”, which is pretty obvious. Adding complexity to this as I figure out what the possibilities are for the hidden pattern. If you’re familiar with Bézier curves, I placed 4 overlapping lines connecting midpoints of the plane edge at 45° angles and dragg…omg, I’m boring myself. I made a smaller square by connecting the midpoints of the frame. Then I dragged control points to opposite points of the edge. Then I repeated this over and over, moving to the next point along the edge. There. Wasn’t that exciting? The first image is where I am with it now. The next 2 are details. Going back to triangle tiling, these are two different triangle designs; one of them is made from 4 smaller triangles and the other is made from 9 smaller triangles. . The overall design is created by adding some hypertiling, and I’ve got two designs for each triangle. One of them is the main design but zoomed in (second and fourth images). The other two (first and third images) are the main triangle hypertile design, mixed with that same design but inverted, so it fills the rest of the image. . The two designs are very similar to each other since I chose to use the same colours, but I do like the differences between the two. This piece is from a drawing from Ameet Hindocha’s 12 Twelves book that I did several months ago. While the drawing was nearly perfect, I just couldn’t bring myself to paint it because I had no idea what to do and I was afraid to ruin a perfectly beautiful drawing. So it sat on my shelf unpainted for months. Having just completed Lisa DeLong’s course in Color in Context with the School for Traditional Arts, I gained a newfound confidence in painting. The course was enormously beneficial in learning more about color mixing and using color combinations in a piece. One of the things that we learned about was the Persian “haft rang” seven-color system. I have used some of those colors in this piece. Having colors left over in my palette from our class homework from my last piece, I got my answer as to what colors to use for this piece (and perhaps the other 12 Twelves pieces sitting on my shelf waiting to be painted as well). I feel like I’m in The Wizard of Oz and I just landed in Munchkinland and the whole world is now in Technicolor. FINISHED! Over the last two days I’ve cast 256 mini sandcastles in a 2-metre square grid pattern resembling a labyrinth. It’s actually the fourth iteration of the Hilbert-Moore space filling curve, a fractal that, in the limit, entirely occupies 2D space with a one-dimensional line. It was my response to the Aral Sea environmental disaster, the site of which we visited last week in western Uzbekistan (Karakalpakstan). I was inspired to bring colourful toy buckets from my seaside home in Brighton UK to landlocked Uzbekistan. I made the castles from the barren, possibly toxic sand we dug up at Muynaq Ship Graveyard and transported all the way across country to the art gallery here in Samarkand. I wanted the castles to evoke the transitory nature of occupying empires such as the Soviet Union, British Empire and Timurid Dynasty, and their inevitable collapse. Alongside the installation will be enlarged photos of the fairytale sandcastles I made on the rusty old boats in the Aral Sea desert. Edge notched tetrahedron or a stellated tetrahedron Take the two faces on both sides of an edge and connect the midpoints of the face. And make a nodge that goes up to vertices at the edge. Then you get in the tetrahedron case this stellated form. The new edges go from the vertices to the midpoints of the faces. The concept is not new. The old masters of the 16th century, like Wenzel Jamnitzer, have made it before. A version can be found in his book "Perspectiva corporum regulatium" from 1568. I just want to have a wireframe version of it. The pocket angle at the vertices is very small, only 16.8 degrees.
