This 1977 Marshall JMP model 2203 had older Groove Tube 6550s made by General Electric. As one was a bit weak, it was decided with the customer to install another vintage tube if possible, rather than a whole new set. I had only one 6550 from a recent tube safari, and it just happened to be a similar GE, and unused to boot 🙂 . So the tube shown in pic 5 was in the amp. It has Groove Tube PRINTED on it, but has GE markings ETCHED on the glass. The general rule is you have to go by the etching to identify the manufacturer, as opposed to what is printed on the glass ( a customer can ask to have their name printed on the glass, or base) . What year would the tube be? GE uses dots to mark the date. Dear all! I must tell you one thing that me and Patrik Lämborg discovered! It’s about Marshall amps and the tubes they use/used. To make a brief story.. The US general agent was not satisfied with the EL34 tubes, as they weren’t very reliable. So in the USA they decided to use 6550-tubes instead. Me and Patrik really tried this out, swapping tubes, and let me tell you one thing or two about it! The “Marshall sound” is NOT in the EL34 tubes entirely! The 6550’s sounded just as much Marshall as the 34’s! And what is the Marshall sound anyway? To me it’s “woody” and midrange:y. I am really sure that you’ve heard many records, and American bands, that in fact used 6550’s. And we all thought it was EL34’s! 😅 I haven’t really got the opportunity to do tests like this before and really try 6550’s out. I only thought they were very expensive. Too bad we didn’t record it all yesterday! But we will, this autumn, I promise! ☝️ Featuring Mankan Blakk Sedenberg (I hope) also! Patrik is one hell of a player! One of the best Ritchie Blackmore style guitarists I’ve ever heard! That Stratocaster sound! ❤️🙏 To die for..! The 6550’s sounded absolutely fabulous and I will use them in some DF-amps in the future to come! It was differences among the different brands of EL34’s also, but sometimes only subtle. But if you chase those extra percentages, which I do, take your time and try different power tubes out. It’s really worth it! Mullard EL34s + 3x RCA 12AX7 Blackplate Got insanely lucky with this tube haul. I sometimes buy amps just for their tubes, and this was one of those cases. I knew for sure it had a matched quad of RCA EL34s, which were about 1/2 the price of the amp already. What I wasn't expecting was that there were two faded Mullard EL34 tubes as well. These are worth a stupid amount of money, because these are what came stock with vintage Marshalls. I also lucked out on three RCA 12AX7 Blackplates. 1970s General Electric 6L6GC Matched Quad I'm not sure why companies don't make the short bottle 6L6GC tubes anymore. They're sturdier and have a much cooler aesthetic than the normal kind. These were actually used in the mid to late 70s silverface Fenders (albeit rebranded as Fender tubes lol). I'm not a big fan of GE tubes in general. They're reliable and American made, but I've never associated them with amps that sounded exceptional (case in point the late 70s Silverface Fenders), and they aren't anywhere close to Mullard EL34s or RCA 6L6s in terms of tone. However, for a budget vintage tube, you could do a lot worse than these, especially for a matched quad, which are super super rare in older amps. Anyways, I'm selling these in an auction on eBay. A few weeks ago I came across a local church rummage sale and found this cool Wells Lamont salesman's case from 1953 but didn't have a price on it, I left my phone number and the seller actually got back to me a week later. She had two of these but sold one and wanted a whopping $25 for this one. Fast forward 2 weeks to today and I was able to go back to the rummage sale, picked it up, brought it home and filled it with all of my power tubes after a good cleaning. Some are used but still test very high on my meters, the rest are NOS. I think I have just about everything covered. I guess if I'm going to hoard anything it might as well be tubes and everything tube amp related. My wife has told be that I have said "tubes" in my sleep more then once. I've had other dreams that someone broke into my house and stole the tubes out of my 66 Band Master but didn't take anything else and escaped through a small 1ft square window that doesn't exist here.
