Try to bring up one time you made a mistake this week in front of your kids…laughing at yourself in the process. Talk about your responsibility in that mistake and how you feel about it. Let’s layer in feelings to the facts. And talk about how you either asked for forgiveness or do so in front of them. For example, “I can’t believe I made a joke today that hurt my friend at work’s feelings. As soon as I realized it, I went to him and told him how sorry I was. I told him that his friendship matters a lot to me and asked for his forgiveness,” kind of thing. Lessons I learned while being the mother of 2 teenage girls, lesson 12: Forgiveness. �Friends, carrying guilt will take you nowhere good. Carrying regret, shame and anger will do absolutely NOTHING for you. During the therapeutic process I dig deep in this aspect because a lot of the actions we take are because of something we had done in the past and we're still carrying that garbage. Think of situations that you have been involved in that still cause you to have a knot in your stomach, then admit your responsibility in the situation and then pray/manifest/declare self-forgiveness and let go. Remember that your children are watching you how you manage life, especially how you handle the difficult situations. If you made a mistake, take responsibility, ask for forgiveness if you offended anyone, and allow yourself to forgive yourself. Showing love and compassion towards ourselves is one of the most powerful actions we can take towards a peaceful and fulfilled life. When you talk in generalities, young kids do not get what you are telling them to do. Your kids can’t be wise in their thinking if they don’t have all the facts they need and don’t know how to use those facts practically. Before you give your kids/teens freedoms, you need to make sure they know how to set their own boundaries and how to stick to them. Lessons I learned as being the mother of 2 teenage girls lesson 11: Gratitude. It's such a small thing, but it makes a BIG difference in how we see the world. It all starts with you. Research supports that keeping a daily gratitude journal rewires our brains to be more positive and open for growth. I always encourage my clients that have anxiety and/or depression to start a daily practice of gratitude and to actually write it down (also supported by research). Try it for 30 days: Write 3 things that you're grateful for that happened to you THAT day. The purpose is to find the small things in your daily life that are worth smiling about, that warm your heart and encourage us to keep going. The more we notice small good things, the more good things we'll see in our everyday life and all of a sudden we have a positive outcome in life. Have it as a family activity after dinner. Lessons I learned about myself while being the mother of 2 teenage girls, lesson 9: Self-discovery. �I loved having girls, because I could clearly see aspects of me in them, some of those very painful, but most of them they helped me honor myself. Growing up I remember doing cartwheels and being on hand stands everywhere I could. I LOVED going to gymnastics class, climbing tress, defying gravity, jumping, flipping and everything that had to do with moving my body to learn and practice new skills. ��As an adult, one of my careers I explored with was acting. I had always been absolutely intrigued by human emotion and behavior. Commercials made me cry, I was astonished how loud silence could be in a scene in a movie, and how relationships start and develop. ��My youngest daughter does competitive cheerleading and I LOVE watching her push her body (like I remember pushing mine) to the limits for FUN! She enjoys every second of it. ��My oldest does musical theatre and absolutely rocks the stage when she's impersonating a character through her voice. Lessons I learned by about myself while being a mother of 2 teenage girls, lesson 8: Strength. �Have you ever been to a personal trainer and they tell you: the first sets are warm ups, it's the last rep, the one that you want to give up, throw the towel and think it's not important because you already did so many, THAT'S the one that makes the difference. So many times I felt like giving up on honoring my professional self because I was too tired. The world expects women to work like if they have no children, and raise children like if they don't work. I truly don't care what people think, but I knew I wanted to be a good mother (mainly because I thought I didn't have it in me). I wanted my children to see a powerful woman working towards her dreams, to explore her full potential, to keep her identity, but I also want to be the mother that they come to when they feel down or they need anything. I always want them to know that they can count on me, so I knew I needed to make my time with them count. Some nights when I was exhausted from working on projects at work, and then seeing a couple of clients in the office and maybe doing a post or 2 to grow my own business, I would come home almost dead and my teen would greet me at the door with "mom, let me tell you what happened today!" just when I thought I didn't have it in me, I pulled strength from my pinky toe and sat with my teen on the couch and listen to what's important to her. ALWAYS, always, always I felt renewed and grateful that I had pulled that smudge of energy to be there for her. Lessons I learned from being a mother of teens, lesson 7: Essentialism.�If you haven't read the book by that name, I highly recommend! It's geared toward business settings, but it brought so much light into my mothering. The truth is we cannot (and should not) win every battle. Teens are meant to challenge us, to be disorganized, to be rebellious, be demanding, to NOT want to do their chores. Teens are always saying "they're tired" they know everything, they only have energy for the things they want to do, they will bend (or break) rules, they're moody, they're weird. Yes, yes, yes! That's what they're supposed to be and do at this age. It's a very confusing age, but somehow they know and feel like they have everything under control and they know everything. ��As the mother, you have to be very clear of which battles you will let go, and which battles you're willing to fight in order to win the war. I'm not saying raising teens is a war, but yes I'm saying that haha It's a temporary war until they grow up. Knowing what's essential for your family is imperative to keeping the relationship with your kids strong and healthy. Pick your battles, and then let the other sh*t go. How? Take a values inventory, pick 3-5 that are important and then those are the battles you fight. I didn’t realize how impatient I was until I had children. We’d enjoy our breakfast one minute, and the next, I’d yell at my kids because someone accidentally spilled the juice all over the floor. Then I’d worry, Why do I have no patience with my child? How can I stop yelling? My kids seemed to bring out all these hidden emotions inside me! I wanted to be a patient mom, but parenting without yelling felt impossible in my day-to-day life. With God’s help I made major improvements in this area! I feel less overwhelmed when someone dumps something or asks me a million questions or does something to purposely annoy their sibling. But does that mean I never get irritated? Lessons I learned from being the mother of 2 teenage girls, lesson 6: Compassion. �You hear the word empathy a LOT, but I absolutely the word COMPASSION even more. Empathy is about understanding. Compassion is about love and respect, which I believe its a LOT more powerful. With compassion we're able to lovingly allow our teens to make mistakes and learn from life and other people, for them to walk their own path and at their own pace. Sometimes as parents we set these expectations unto our teens and then they end up resenting the rigidity of the "rules" they have to follow in order to be "successful." The truth is that success looks different for each one of us. We all have different personalities and learn at a very different pace. ��I support families being clear about the values they stand for and setting expectations based on those, and allow your teens to develop their own path and personality. Cheating is lying and deceiving to get an upper hand in a situation. When kids are tempted to cheat, they don’t think “I’m cheating”. They think, “I’m going to win!” or “I’m going to get a better grade!” When it comes to working on training your kids, this falls into the “what’s right and what’s wrong” category. This means ALL cheating is wrong, even in the seemingly little things, like playing games. Your kids’ sense of right and wrong should be so ingrained that when they are confronted with an opportunity to do what they know is wrong, it should be like coming up to a railroad crossing when the lights are flashing and the bar is coming down. The last thing they should think they can do is hit the gas and fly around the bar. Lessons I learned from being a mother of 2 teenage girls. Lesson 5: Self-care. ��This took a completely different meaning than getting a facial or doing meditation. Sure, those help, but my goal through this journey as a mother was to model everything I wanted my girls to be and open doors for myself that I wanted them to walk through. I had to learn the balance between hard-work and self-compassion; between grinding and finding time and space to rest; between choosing to speak up or humbly stay quiet. Honoring and respecting oneself is very different than "self-care" I think we have an idea that self-care is about taking time to go to the gym (which it's an example of an action to take), but it is more about honoring ourselves, setting boundaries, working on our goals, keeping our identity and TRULY listen to the inside voice when it tells us to keep our life mission while sharing the journey with them. ��Remember to treat yourself the way you want your kids to treat themselves. Lessons that I learned while being a mother of 2 teenagers, lesson number 4: Communication. �Effective and efficient communication. Sure, of course I know how to speak, but with my teens I wanted to have a communication that strengthened our relationships, that went straight to the point and not sound like a preacher all the time, and certainly NOT yelling all day long was ideal (because most of the time I felt like I wanted to scream!). ��The key to communicating with teens is to listen. Listen, listen, listen. Yes, I know you're the expert. The biggest needs teenagers have is the need to belong, to be heard and understood. It takes courage to admit that we as adults have things to learn from them too. Leave the ego at the door, and allow your teen to explain life in their perspective, from their (limited) experience.
