Je laat een pijnlijke leegte achter, een leegte die niets of niemand kan opvullen. Geen enkel troostend woord verzacht de pijn van jou gemis. Ze zeggen wel, tijd doet helen. Nee liefje, de tijd snijdt! Elke dag beseffen we meer en meer dat we geen tijd meer krijgen met je, dat we jou niet zullen zien opgroeien met je broertjes en zusjes, we nooit zullen weten hoe je zou zijn. Het gemis wordt intenser en zwaarder. De dagen en weken na je overlijden is alles vers en kunnen we elk beeld, elk detail nog voor ons zien maar hoe meer tijd er voorbij gaat hoe vager de details worden. Being a stay at home mom is something woman should be able to be proud of. Giving up your independence to dedicate your time fully to your children and home making isn’t an easy thing to do. You lose any form of Independence and while it’s so unbelievably rewarding, it’s also unbelievably challenging. I find myself so frequently overwhelmed with responsibilities that are repetitive and feel as though I’m living the same day over and over, caring for everyone outside of myself with lots of moments of feeling unappreciated, and alone with no form of “me time” and no “breaks”, it’s definitely draining and comes with a lot of challenges. But to give up your own path to pave the way for your children is so selfless and genuinely remarkable and no woman should ever feel less than, or guilty for choosing the path of a stay at home momma. We have a new favourite game in the house and it has so many bonus points. First it is so quick to get out and play with as you do not need any board to play and you can start right away. And you can literally bring it and play anywhere as the whole game can fit into your hand bag! The best part for me is how while having fun, we can sneak a bit of spelling practice into it...and let's say that between Lotory and fitting 3 times He, some people will definitely benefit from it! When children are upset their behaviour can become intense. It is challenging to know what to say and how to respond when kids are angry and dysregulated. It is normal as a parent to take it personally and feel equally upset with your child. Our impulse may be to reprimand them, set a boundary and tell them how revolting what they are doing and saying is. But the reality is that whilst we see anger on the outside, on the inside is shame, hurt, disconnection, isolation and pain. We do not want to meet our child's pain with more pain by creating more disconnection and space in the relationship with them. We want to be the safe anchoring amidst the stormy emotional waters. I know many people may be reading this and thinking, "I cannot let my child get away with this sort of behaviour. I won't let them talk to me or anyone like this". The reality is that this way of thinking is old-fashioned. It breeds more shame and pain. There is never a time in anyone's childhood when they acted in the wrong way, and experiencing more pain, punishment and shame from a parent helped them feel better, learn the right skills to manage their anger and feel good about themselves. If we want to discipline our children, we must realise discipline is the art of learning through boundaries, love and connection. When we can see our children's true intentions and feelings, the hidden messages below the surface, we can be responsive parents rather than reactive. This way we can help our children learn the skills to regulate their emotions, de-shame their words and help bring them back after a big emotion so that we can help them feel connected too, and give them the right tools to manage in the future. Calming down the situation should be our focus when our kids are overwhelmed. It does not need to be complicated. Often the simplest things we do can make the biggest difference.

If you’re choosing to spoon feed your baby purees, avoid these pitfalls. * Using a spoon that’s too big for your baby’s little mouth will be hard for your baby to manipulate, so choose a baby-sized spoon. * Avoid scraping the food upwards toward baby’s palate. Doing so won’t teach baby how to chew or swallow and instead encourages tongue thrusting. * Avoid shoveling food too quickly into baby’s mouth. Aim instead for responsive feeding, even if you’re spoon feeding. The idea is to allow your baby to learn to recognize hunger and satiety cues, so don’t push food into his mouth, letting him lead instead. * Try not to wipe baby’s chin with the spoon, even if food dribbles down (it will!). Using the spoon to clean the mess on baby’s chin is disruptive to feeding, and also tickles baby’s sensitive nerve endings there. Let the mess happen, use a washcloth and pat instead (if you must), or better yet, clean baby after the meal is done. * Even if you’re feeding purees, it’s a great idea to let baby self feed instead of you always doing the feeding. Self feeding is incredibly important, so hand over the spoon and avoid always spoon feeding your baby. * Don’t stick with purees for too long. Your baby will need to learn to chew finger foods, and you should aim to introduce finger foods as early as possible after 6 months old.
