And that’s a wrap for the 2023 @polesportorg Canada East! Last time I competed live was on that stage in 2019, and of course since then lot have changed. Preparing for a competition while navigating and learning my new roles as a mother and a studio owner it’s a whole different ballgame, lemme tell yah! 😅 My goal, from the moment I signed up, was to get back to my former self as a pole dancer, and bring a routine I would have been proud to present even pre-pregnancy. Like every competition, not everything went as planned, however I was there, 4 years, a studio, a baby, and two surgeries later, holding a second place trophy. I say, mission accomplished. 🙂 And of course, I didn’t go only as a competitor, but also as a coach. I am so proud of my athletes @bevonnie and @raidorothea , two absolutely beautiful humans that were a joy to work with. They both worked incredibly hard, and it was an honour being part of their growth as competitors and as performers. Thank you for trusting me, for sharing this journey with me, and for your generosity in sharing all the kind of feelings, the good and the bad, that training and competing brings. Last weekend was the PSO Canada East pole competition in Toronto. I had the honour of coaching several competitors along their journey and one of the most impactful lessons that I witnessed over the weekend was this: You can walk off stage feeling proud of your performance, and as soon as you see the judges' rankings, immediately feel ashamed. One of the first things I ask my coaching clients when we start training for a competition is what they're looking to get out of the experience. If they just want to win, to construct a routine that will tick all the right judging boxes, I know they won't get the experience they're looking for from training with me. Not because I can't get them there, but because if you're "in it to win it" and trying to fit yourself into a predetermined mold, then anything less than the outcome of winning will feel like a failure, like all of the hours of hard work were wasted, and like you are unworthy on a personal level if the judges don't pick you as number one. If, however, they're in it to challenge themselves, to get creative, to design a performance that they are excited to show off because it feels authentic to them, then I can guarantee a positive experience for them, regardless of their placement in the judges' eyes. In a competition, it's important to know what the criteria are for scoring, just as in life, it's important to know what the world's expectations of us are. The piece though that often gets overlooked, ignored, or forgotten is that we also set our own criteria for what resonates within us as individuals. "I know what the judges are looking for. I also know what feels true to who I am as an artist, and I'm going to listen to that feeling." Being authentic to yourself will always bring more pride. Trying (whether successfully or not) to live up to someone else's expectations will always bring more shame. More than anything in this whole entire world, I need to thank @rachelzack633. She helped me process through the ups and downs of training, take rest, gave me massages, came to the studio and gave the verbal feedback I needed during run throughs, etc. Rachel has heard about my life as a girlfriend, but saw me as an athlete and treated me as such, which was a blessing that helped my confidence through this experience. I struggled to pick a song, with combos, with concept, with message, with costume... and everytime, she was right next to me, supporting me and offering me honest feedback. She called me out when the training was stressing me out and I started becoming quite volatile, which helped me recenter. She was lovely with me through the event; checked in with me, gave me space, brought me food, helped me focus, grounded me, and prayed with me. She was in those seats screaming for me, making sure I had video because she KNEW I need to see my performance right after I get off stage. She even taped fabric to my lab!a so nothing slipped out. She brought me my favourite donut, and had one for herself. She supported the other dancers, offered to help take pictures, was supportive to my pole team, etc. Rachel was... IS magnificent. And although I don't love her for what she does FOR me, I'm not sure I had ever felt more seen and loved romantically. Although I like to keep our romantic life somewhat private from social media, this was too beautiful to keep to myself. And I assure you, I'm going to marry her. Right before COVID shut down the world, I took my first pole class and fell in love! I took as many classes as I was able throughout the pandemic and all of the lockdowns until the studio I attended fully shut down. When my husband and I moved downtown, I put up my pole and started practicing at home. . I signed up for my first Pole Sport competition and practiced a routine over the summer, but at the start of last month I contracted COVID which took me out of practicing for weeks. I lost so much strength and flexibility but still really wanted to compete so this past week I reworked my routine and tried to make it easier and practiced as much as I could. I was still afraid I would fall on my face, but I thought even if I did it would still at least be fun 🙃 . I was very happy to not fall on my face, but I did fall on my back/butt - and I still had so much fun! I got up, kept going, messed up a few other parts, nailed a few others, met some of the nicest and incredible preformers and legit had one of the best moments of life when I was able to do a no hands genie on the spin pole 🤗 For my first competition and considering how sick I was exactly one month ago, I'm beyond proud with my performance and so thrilled with where I placed! First time being on stage in three years. Two weeks post covid. Last weekend I couldn’t even climb the pole I was so winded. I wanted to tell my story and share it with others. All I cared was I finished. Didn’t care if I placed. Just finish and connect with my audience. I’m was told I made many shed a tear or almost did. That they felt what I was feeling and sharing. Today was a whirlwind. A happy, glorious day. I am bringing that 🥉 medal with all the love in my heart. I have spent the last 3 years wishing to hit that stage again. Last comp, I was out with a blown out back, sprained wrist, and unable to lift. Covid was a nightmare for all of us. But I needed to acknowledge my own experience. And this was me telling that story. From breakdowns to hallucinations... it's not easy admitting it, but it was my reality. I walked off that stage today closing a chapter with myself, and hopefully opening my book to everyone else. I find it unfathomable that it's been a year. I began my competitive career only to end up needing to take a 2-3 month break for a serious injury. As I was just about healed and cleared from my doctors, the pandemic happened. It's bittersweet to look back. I'm so proud of all the work I put in; the endless hours of training and passion which led to my first medal. I was starry-eyed thinking of the next competition. Walking off that stage, I was thinking this was going to be the beginning. Of all the great places I'd go. The stages I'd hit. The audiences I'd flirt with. The tricks I'd nail. And only dreaming of how much better I'd get. Pole was my whole identity. I was an athlete and I was proud of my accomplishments. My heart has definitely changed because of circumstance. Although my body has healed to a usable degree, the pandemic changed how the scene looks. And I've had to adjust how I fit into the picture. I can only hope that 2021 will bring some great things for me. I hope damn well that a stage I can conquer is the plan. 🤸♀️MEET OUR MEMBERS: @leannanasberg.fit (@lelonasberg) born and raised in Winnipeg grew up a competitive dancer. She trained in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and Ukrainian dance. Leanna was able to perform and compete all over North and South America and Europe. She started pole dancing randomly one day when she decided to try it in 2013. Leanna was approached to teach shortly after starting pole and taught for about 3 years before she stepped back from teaching so she could train to compete in pole. Leanna won 1st place in PSO northwest level 3 in 2017. While performances have been put on hold these days, she has performed at various events such as for an Iron Maiden cover band, alongside drag queens, workshops and online art events. Adriene chose PCA because of the freedom and space to train due to her spontaneous schedule. Since then, Virginia trained and developed her signature pole style, which she taught to hundreds of students in her hometown Winnipeg, and across Canada. Some awards she has include 2nd place PSO Canada East Championship 2019 Level 5 (pro division), 1st place PSO Canada East Championship 2018 Junior/ Senior Level 4, 4th Place Vertical Love 2016 Pro and 3rd place 2015 CPFC semi pro.
