Thanks again to @gardenista_sourcebook for featuring Pine House founder @lesliecbennett and our new GARDEN WONDERLAND book in their newly launched Quick Takes column!  The column is for subscribers only and can be found at Gardenista.com — but the images in it are (mostly) from the book and we’re happy to be able to share some of them here!! We love this beautiful view of our side yard kitchen garden project in Hillsborough — scroll through to see Leslie enjoying the springtime fragrance of sweet lilacs, an overhead shot of Leslie’s backyard garden in Oakland, our front yard edible meadow planting in Palo Alto, our favorite dark glossy green leafed ligularia plant, and a backyard harvest of summer green beans! Thanks to @hollyautumnkuljian @lonna_lopez and @jessicacomerford for your inspired garden designs and plantings, to @rachelweill for your beautiful photos, and @daniel_shipp for the impromptu portrait — there’s so much beauty in the gardens that we make and got to include in our book, it’s a pleasure to get to share some of it with you all here!! 🌿🌸✨💕 #gardenwonderlandbook #ediblelandscape #kitchengarden #ediblemeadow #frontyardedibles #favoriteplants #edibleflowers #growfood #growflowers #quicktakes

Quick Takes With: Byron and Dexter Peart: The work of twin brothers Dexter and Byron Peart first caught our eye in 2019, when they pivoted from their cult-favorite brand WANT Les Essentiels to start something new: Goodee, a marketplace of globally made wares that works for the greater good. Together from their base of Montreal, Dexter and Byron Peart serve as “lead curators”, as they say, for a range of products that make a social or environmental impact, support local makers, and often help preserve “time-honored skills so that they can be passed along through generations.” Since our first post on the duo, we’ve popped into their one-time pop-up shop at the Whitney in New York and coveted their offerings for the garden and indoors; most recently they’ve partnered with the Ace Hotel Toronto, giving a premier guest suite the Goodee treatment. But even more than their eye, we applaud the do-good ethos that Dexter and Byron have built: Goodee is B-Corp certified and part of 1 Percent for the Planet, too. “Our values are simple,” they say: “We believe in good design, good people, and good impact.” Today, a Quick Takes double feature: The brothers share the Instagram accounts they look to for inspiration, their favorite design destinations, and what they’re bringing when they come over… Above: Photograph from Oh, Goodee! Byron and Dexter Peart’s New Essentials for the Home. You’re invited to dinner. What’s your go-to gift? Byron: I am kind of obsessed with fresh-cut flowers, but I also like to gift friends and loved ones something that lasts forever, so I often pair with this go-to Botero vase by Malaika. Dexter: A bottle of Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. What’s your desert island design/art/architecture-related book? B: Fewer, Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects by Glenn Adamson. In both life and business, I believe in cherishing and nurturing these “fewer better things” as belongings that are continually with you through a lifetime and adapt as you move and as your life evolves. D: Home Is Where the Heart Is by Ilse Crawford. I have not only read this book several times, I have… #QuickTakes #DesignNews #SubscriberOnly | BidBuddy.com

Quick Takes With: Cassandra Ellis: “Your home should be your storyteller—the weaver of the red thread and a marker of you and yours.” “The rolling hills are almost human in their falls and curves.“ “It’s not the fanciest house, but if it makes people feel, then I’ve done what I think is right.” You’d be forgiven for thinking that these are excerpts from a gorgeously written novel. But Cassandra Ellis, designer and color doyenne, writes more lyrically than almost anyone we know about her projects. (Further evidence here, here and here.) She also treats rooms themselves as poetry, most recently through Atelier Ellis, her Bath, England-based paint company. “Loving color and nature, I wanted to create a human-scale business that looks for reminders of humanity in everything we do,” she says. “We make beautiful, breathable, bio-based paint and color that helps people tell the story of their home. And for this, I am very proud.” Today Cassandra shares her go-to daily uniforms, the podcast she puts on for inspiration, and the hue she’s dreaming of for her bedroom. Read on… . You’re invited to dinner. What’s your go-to gift? My stepdaughter is now a pastry chef at the renowned Landrace Bakery, so our friends mostly want her delicious goods. Previously it would have been Champagne and flowers from the garden. Good friends get all three. What’s on your bedside table? Books. So, so many books. All nonfiction, but generally a mixture of business, biography, and beautiful pictures. And magazines. I won’t ever stop buying print magazines. Blumenhaus and Handwerk are my two new favorites. What’s your desert island design-related book? Isle Crawford’s Sensual Home. Over 25 years old and still the most relevant book on what home is and should be. What podcast or playlist do you put on when you need inspiration? Time Sensitive by Spencer Bailey. He is the best interviewer, and his guests are always inspiring, intelligent, and useful. I’ve learnt so much for my life and my business. Above: A favorite from A Refined Terrace House in London by Cassandra Ellis. Quick Takes With: Sandeep Salter: If you’ve coveted a billowy nap dress in the past few years, or a pair of bloomers, you can thank Sandeep Salter. From Salter House, the “shop, design house, and cafe” with outposts in Brooklyn Heights (and, more recently, the East Village), Sandeep is quietly setting the tone for what’s-old-is-new fashion—and housewares, too. She designs pieces herself and curates a collection that makes brooms, brushes, and other utility look downright romantic. “The daughter of a choreographer and a dancer, Sandeep grew up in London’s Primrose Hill before studying fine art at Parsons in New York,” Alexa wrote in our first story on Sandeep, way back in 2018, and we trust her eye on everything….including art. Next to the original Salter House location is Picture Room, where Sandeep curates works on paper, paintings, and photography; curates exhibitions; and serves as an art advisor for collectors. Today she’s sharing with us a film recommendation, the two pieces on heavy rotation in her closet, and a source for embroidered sheets. Read on: What was your first design love? Ikea catalogs. You’re invited to dinner. What’s your go-to gift? Always something I’ve recently made at Salter House: a new embroidered linen, a nightdress, a new basket! What I’m excited about that day. But for all occasions: this. What do you listen to when you need inspiration? Aerial East. The Smile’s new album. Or The Waves by Virginia Woolf. Above left: The Beatrice blouse, inspired by Much Ado About Nothing and stitched in NYC. Above right: Plumetis linens from Cologne & Cotton. Something you watched recently whose aesthetic has stuck with you? The Sweet East. What’s been your best house upgrade? A vanity—a thoughtful gift from my husband. It’s a place just for me. My favorite sheets are… I love Cologne & Cotton. I used to wander around the shop after school for so many years, and I love their embroidered sheets. My favorite paint color for the bedroom is… Parma Gray. Above: A glimpse of Sandeep’s place (in her go-to paint color). Quick Takes With: David Stark: Any party planner will tell you it’s all about the details—but David Stark takes that maxim to a new level. The in-demand New York-based event producer, designer, and author designs fêtes for celebrities, stars, and nonprofits the world over, but look closer and you’ll begin to notice that even the glitziest of soirees often feature the humblest of materials. Candleholders made from….old bricks? Statement-making centerpieces quite literally made from eggshells? David’s done it. In his hands, everyday materials are transformed into something that’ll make you do a double-take—a party trick that’s made him our go-to whenever we’re throwing a shindig of our own (see: the Scandi-inspired holiday party; moody spring table, and an architect-inspired dinner). For this week’s Quick Takes, David divulges the entertaining book he keeps within easy reach, the shops (and soundtracks) he goes to for inspiration, and the one table-setting move he can’t stand (are you guilty of this?). Read on… Above: Photograph by Corbin Gurkin. What’s your signature design move? I have a few up my sleeve, but one go-to is utilizing everyday materials in ways in which they were not meant to be employed. What’s on your bedside table? Stacks of old copies of World of Interiors and the book Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. Is there a book you read recently that impacted you? I recently finished Letters to Camondo by Edmund de Waal, which was stunningly beautiful. What are you listening to these days? I just saw the hybrid dance/theater/music production of Illinoise, and it has inspired me to revisit Sufjan’s Stevens’ iconic album on which the show was based. [Ed. note: Illinoise is now set to open on Broadway.] Which Instagram accounts do you go to for design inspiration? @freelingwaters, @kellybehunstudio, and @ugorondinone0. Your best house upgrade? The renovation of the loft that my husband, Migguel Anggelo, and I share in Brooklyn Heights, which was lovingly done by the talented folks at MADE and designed in collaboration with Jane Schulak. We are all about… #QuickTakes #DesignNews #SubscriberOnly | BidBuddy.com

Quick Takes With: Helen Rice: We’ve been following Helen Rice’s shrewd design eye for a decade: first through Fuzzco—the creative agency she co-founded that’s turning 20 this year—and more recently via a few new projects, among them PM Residence, a rental flat available through her project Serious Buildings, and a “home ephemera shop” called Ponytail. “Growing up, I wore a ponytail because I was busy being a tomboy,” she told Julie in our recent feature. I wanted the shop to be an expression of a new phase in my life where I didn’t take things so seriously.” Here—for our second installment of Quick Takes—Helen shares her litmus test for a good housewarming present, a movie palette that inspires her, and what’s *not* on her bedside table (or anywhere else in her house, for that matter). Read on: Above: Photograph by Cyle Suesz. Your first design love: The architecture in Charleston. I was born about five blocks away from where I live now. What was the last thing you watched that stuck with you? I was really struck by the color compositions and beautiful sadness of Grand Prix (1966). It made me realize how much inspiration there is to find in old movies, especially the ones not everyone is looking at. What are you listening to? The Studs Terkel Archive Podcast is so great. I enjoyed his conversations with Leonard Bernstein, Tom Wolfe, and Mel Brooks. Your best house upgrade: The filtered water tap that comes out of the wall in my kitchen. What’s on your bedside table? Nothing. I like how clutter feels in other people’s homes, but I can’t stand it in mine. Above: Helen’s best kitchen addition. Best host or housewarming present to give? Something useful or consumable. A great knife sharpener, bottle opener, or set of cloth napkins. And a budget purchase you can’t live without? L.L. Bean’s Extra Large Boat and Tote. A design pet peeve…or two? I hate seeing a huge header where there used to be a wall. Just leave the wall in that case—or there’s just got to be a more elegant way to accomplish opening one space to another. I also really don’t think… #QuickTakes #DesignNews #SubscriberOnly | BidBuddy.com

Yuval Noah Harari delves into the most pressing issues of our modern world with a refreshing, thought-provoking perspective. It’s full of insights, and I genuinely recommend it as a must-read for entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of the 21st century. Harari’s knack for storytelling shines through as he weaves together historical narratives, current events, and future predictions. He tackles various topics, from technology and politics to religion and education, all while maintaining a balanced, objective viewpoint. His ability to distil complex ideas into digestible insights, a little like Quick Takes, is commendable, making the book a go-to for entrepreneurs, business owners or just fellow curious folk. “21 Lessons for the 21st Century” is a compelling read and encourages critical thinking and introspection. It’s a book that doesn’t hesitate to ask tough questions about our society and our role in shaping the future. It’s a valuable resource for entrepreneurs and business leaders looking to understand the broader context in which they operate. While it may not provide all the answers, it certainly sparks the questions necessary for navigating our increasingly complex world. ----- Quickly satisfy your entrepreneurial curiosity with fast, fascinating takes on entrepreneurship, life, business & more. Spotting opportunities in current trends is a key skill for any entrepreneur. It’s all about keeping your finger on the pulse and being ready to adapt. But there’s a potential pitfall: trends can be fickle, and what’s hot today can be old news tomorrow. Don’t be a fashion victim. 🌞 Still over here, happily reading my way through the Domestic Diva series by Krista Davis. I am forcing myself to space them out, listening to something else between each one. 🎂The Diva Takes the Cake-or Much Ado about Craig and Hannah. I didn't realize Craig first showed up in book 1. Also here's where I see Natasha is more complex than I remembered. She has a great deal of insecurities and feels a lack of control combined with her at times arrogant sense of confidence that makes her hard to be around. See fireworks that go off and ruin an event space. But she can be nice too. See hanging swags on a garden shed. 🪣The Diva Paints the Town or the Disappearing Body. I really liked this the first time I read it, but I'd forgotten the details. It feels like a classic mystery plot, with puzzles left for possible heirs to solve, a body that looked dead but disappeared, and more. Davis writes complex plots and there are often several mysteries to unravel. I feel like we get a real sense of Nina, and I need more Nina and Sophie stake outs (and following people, and tackling bad guys, and rescuing animals). Also Sophie realizes Natasha was nicer to their neighbor than she was (but Natasha’s bequest is still hilarious). 🪿The Diva Cooks the Goose or How Multiple Grinches Almost Ruined Christmas. We don't get much Nina, Wolf, or Bernie, or even Mars for that matter but all of Sophie's family, lots of Jen (love her) and not one but two ragdoll kittens. There's also a thread of appreciating what you've got, whether it be family, friends, or possessions. Leave it to Natasha to take regifting to a new level while declaring turquoise and pink to be the new red and green. I'm almost caught up to where I left off reading the series. Up next is the series entry I've read the most-this will be my 4th or 5th time reading The Diva Haunts the House. #adomesticdivasummer #thedomesticdiva #kristadavis #cozymysteryseries #rereading #culinarycozymystery #buddyread #cozycommunity #quicktakes #amreading #amlistening

BLERD AT THE MOVIES: QUICK TAKES - #Renfield A major aspect that gets overlooked in Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel “Dracula” is that Renfield is just as much as a victim of the Count’s diabolical and bloody evil as Lucy Westenra, Mina Harker, and Jonathan Harker. Unfortunately, a modern reader likely wouldn’t be tell because of Renfield’s bizarre behavior in the latter half of the novel, which includes luring Mina back to the mental institution he’s being held in so Dracula can attack her. Subsequent adaptations of Dracula have leaned into this (admittedly ableist) characterization of Renfield; even the works that attempt to give him more focus (such as 2011’s “Renfield the Undead”) only double down on the murky design of the character. Chris McKay’s latest film, named after the eponymous servant, actually gives Renfield the agency he had been deprived of throughout the novel and various adaptations. Nicholas Hoult’s earnest, big-hearted performance throughout reminds us that, although not a perfect person, Renfield is a victim of the Count’s incessant emotional and mental manipulation and abuse. (A later scene in the film where Dracula (Nicolas Cage) confronts Renfield and gaslights him darkly captures this reality all while balancing the humor of Renfield’s futile attempts to defend himself from his boss.) It’s a testament to Hoult’s talents as an actor to transform Renfield into a (mostly) realized character who desires to stop being dehumanized and figuring out what kind of person he wants to be in the modern world. I’d be remissed if I didn’t mention Nicolas Cage’s Dracula at any point here. From start to finish, it is very clear that Cage’s Count is both an homage to the late great Bela Lugosi (the actor forever associated with Dracula) and inspired by other great actors who’ve portrayed the Count, such as Gary Oldman and Christopher Lee. As someone who longs for the days where vampires were scary, Cage delivers the goods — all while truly leaning into his Dracula being deeply toxic. (CONTINUED IN COMMENTS!)

BLERD AT THE MOVIES: QUICK TAKE - The Super Mario Bros. Movie You know those YouTube videos that take all the cutscenes in a game and edit them like a movie? That’s probably the best way to describe #TheSuperMarioBrosMovie. It’s just a series of cutscenes competently edited together to resemble a movie. Truth be told, this movie only exists to make parents buy more Mario merch — from games and toys to costumes and accessories — and maybe shell out the cash for a family trip to Super Nintendo Land at Universal Studios Hollywood. This movie gets an A+ in uber-corporate synergy, if nothing else. I know many going in were nervous to hear Chris Pratt’s “Goodfellas”-esque Mario accent, but, honestly, he’s not the weakest link here. (But he’s also not the best voice actor; Jack Black and Keegan Michael-Key share that honor as Toad and Bowser, respectively.) Between Charlie Day’s over-the-top, perennially terrified Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy’s lifeless, girlboss Peach, and the Seth Rogen-ification of Donkey Kong, Chris Pratt is the most tolerable of the cast. (With that said, I want the trend of casting celebrities for voice acting performances to end because a majority of them are simply not good.) The plot itself is ripped straight from the games — Mario must protect the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser — and at no point do the directors challenge themselves to do anything different. On the one hand, I’m fine with ‘by the numbers’ movies; not every film has to be groundbreaking. But this film flat out refuses to be anything other than a bunch of Mario characters homaging the franchise’s entire history against a neon-rainbow color palette. Honestly, it’s just lazy and insulting; not only do adults deserve better movies, but so do the kids. The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t do much to stand out from a crowded animated film market place (despite having a strong, non-Disney animation studio onboard), nor does it really do anything to stand out within an IP-heavy box office. Sure, it will take the Number One spot for its opening weekend, but I don’t see it having any longevity after that. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not good, nor is it totally bad. Just mid.
