The great feijoa harvest has begun. We pruned our trees quite hard last year but despite that the crop is bountiful and some are absolute giants. I love making feijoa and rhubarb crumble, yum! Amazing how the vines grow in that rich volcanic landscape, planting two vines in each pit and protected by stone walls from the trade winds; their roots stretching down through the top layers of volcanic ash into the soil layer and moisture underneath, producing an abundance of delicious grapes every year🍇 The main grape is Malvasia producing both dry and sweet white wines and Muscatel for the full bodied red. At this time of year, the Fuyu persimmon has just leafed out with the prettiest bright chartreuse green foliage, the California poppies are looking cheerful dotted on the hillside, the wisteria is gorgeous and super fragrant, and the geums, ranunculus and pincushion flowers are the stars of the show! In the grand scheme of things it may seem of little consequence but I grew no flowers last year. Just lots of veg. I didn’t think it would affect me so much but the sadness was real. My dahlias - 3 large totes full of tubers and wrapped in plastic stayed under my house. I’ve just pulled them out and what a happy surprise as it looks at least half will still be viable.
