Let’s talk about the Broken Dishes quilt block! It’s OLD, dating back to the late 18th century, with no known/definite place of origin. So many patterns today use this classic, age-old pattern in their modern quilts, and change the name, giving it modern appeal, which it most certainly has! This is a twin size quilt made with broken dishes blocks, using the 4-at-a-time HST method. I decided to turn every other block to make a secondary ‘star’ pattern within the quilt. Can you see it? Saturday morning tip: After you complete your quilt top, run a 1/8” line of stitching around the perimeter of the finished quilt top to prevent seams from unraveling. This is especially useful when you’ve pieced the top using techniques such as strip piecing, where you sew strips of fabric together and then cut them down into the appropriate sized pieces. As the quilt gets larger, the weight can pull on those unsecured points and slowly rip out the stitches. Sewing the perimeter prevents this from happening, and the stitches are hidden under the binding when you’re done! It’ll save you a ton of headaches. I’ve been getting prepared for the Make Your Own Coasters class coming up in April! The great thing about coasters is that there are no rules! You can make them with one fabric, you can make mini quilt blocks, you can quilt them or topstitch, and you can pick the size! My first sample is this coastal inspired coaster - the finished size is 5 1/2” square…big enough for a cup or glass with your favorite beverage, and a sweet treat. And, it’s washable! Tuesday Tip: When your quilt top is complete, sew a 1/8” line around the perimeter of the quilt to keep those seam ends from coming apart while you’re ironing/cutting threads/quilting. Ok, friends! As many of you have come into the shop know, this quilt sat in the corner for the first few weeks in strips and pieces. This is the biggest, and probably one of the more complicated quilts I’ve ever made. I took a few breaks in between steps because all of the extra thinking wore me out. 😅. Life is BUSY these days. Quilting has a taken a back seat to back-to-school and other priorities. But I’m still here!
