Been waiting to find a few moments with a #GMC #EnvoyXUV to get some pictures. Not the rarest beast out there but definitely a Doug Demuro kind of quirky with its retractable roof and collapsible midgate. Can kind of see the rails on which the rear third of the roof would slide up and over the middle. Raise the power glass inside the midgate and now you’ve got an enclosed cabin separate from a now topless (but not side glass-less) truck bed. Drop the midgate and gain an extra few feet of cargo room. The Smart Brabus has a turbocharged 1.0 3 cylinder Mitsubishi engine that produces 100 hp and only weighing around 800kg. This one has been tuned to 125 hp (according to what it said when it was listed on SGCarmart), thats lightning quick compared to my 10 tonne base Impreza with 112 hp…its also lowered by 10 mm with Bilstein dampers. The wheels are really cool! Its 16” Brabus wheels at the front and 17s at the back. The automated manual transmission on these however are…well…trash. I’ve read it’s hopelessly unreliable and its basically a must to drive with the paddle shifters because its undrivable on full auto. I don’t know which mad german scientist came up with this one… . . . I love the Renault Modus and I won’t be ashamed of it. It’s as smart as it is small. And as often with other French cars, it is also misunderstood. But with this car, it is one specific part of the car that is misunderstood: the bootchute. Yes, a bootchute, and I’ve officially become a #bootchutehunter thanks to @martijngizmo and @riceaux90. Because of course, for all those hip and trendy millenials wearing UC of Benetton with matching K-Swiss sneakers and a flashy matching SWATCH watch in the busy city centre of Paris, Berlin, London or Milan in 2006, parking would be tight, and so the large rear boot of the Modus couldn’t be opened. There came in the #bootchute: a smaller opening in the rear hatch that could be easily opened during city parking. Of course, illustrated by Renault in beautiful pictures of a Modus parked against a Mégane 2, and only available at a hefty optional price tag. Let it be said that most Modus buyers were far from trendy millenials, but mostly ageing babyboomers, that do not need a bootchute on the spacious driveways of their family homes. Renault of course canceled the bootchute when the Modus was facelifted. Of course the facelift ruined the Modus - a prefacelift is the one to have. The Modus is my most recent obsession. I want one. At the turn of the 21st century, the Ford Motor Company successfully pioneered two vehicles that helped shift the role of SUVs and pickups from utilitarian workhorses to luxury suburban status symbols; firstly with the Lincoln Navigator, and then a year later with the Ford F-150 King Ranch. This was followed by a brainwave. “What if we combined that pair to create the ultimate luxury truck?” The thinking was not without merit, and when the concept was shown on the 1999 Auto Show circuit, it was met with enthusiasm. The Lincoln facia, wood-effect bed with aluminum inlay stripes, and black-only paintwork straddled the line between classy and kitchy, and amenities including heated and cooled leather seats, a sunroof, and even optional GPS (positioned in a near-horizontal position on the center console, of all places) were at least reasonably premium. And thus ended the good news for the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. In an effort to mimic the characteristics of the posh sedans Lincoln thought they were competing with, the Blackwood received a dropped ride height and rear wheel drive only, rendering it no more capable of dealing with muddy or snowy conditions than the Town Car with which it shared a showroom. Worse still, the faux wood bed with its barn-door tailgate was then treated to a carpeted floor, stainless steel walls, a non-removable power tonneau cover, and a paltry 1,200lbs payload capacity. Even a modern Maverick can best that figure by hundreds of pounds. Ford really wanted people to think of this as an extra spacious trunk. Instead, buyers wondered why their $90,000 (2024 dollars) truck couldn’t haul anything more than golf clubs across anything but dry pavement, or alternatively, why they’d want a “sedan” with a contractor-spec interior and the driving dynamics of a hotel airport shuttle. Lincoln sold fewer than 3,400 examples of this deeply strange truck, canceling it after a single model year. The Blackwood’s demise may have been easy to predict in hindsight, but in many ways it was still an innovator, and for those who love an obscure car with a good bit of lore behind it, the Lincoln Blackwood is on the fast track to cult classic status.

“Isuzu. Go Further.” This is a wild and insane one today! A 1999 Isizu Vehi-CROSS Iron Man Edition finished here in Victory White! These cars are very rare, and for obvious reasons. Isuzu only sold 5,958 between 1997-2001, the vast majority of which were sent to the USA which didn’t even get the Vehi-CROSS til 1999. Isuzu launched this car to be a fun hip crossover SUV built for young people’s active lifestyles. It shared many of its components with the Trooper including the 3.2 and 3.5 V6 engines. This example has the latter of which which made 215 hp and 230 lb ft. The Vehi-CROSS also featured a torque on-demand 4WD system using 12 sensors to detect wheel spin and direct power to whichever wheel had the most grip at any given moment that had a 2 speed transfer case. As well as that, it was also available with off road shocks with external heat expansion tanks from the factory! The result was this thing could really go off road and keep going when other off-roaders would get stuck or fall to pieces. The iron man edition added a bunch of extra badging and decals to the Vehi-CROSS’s exterior and Iron Man Triathlon stitched into the seat backs. Just 602 Vehi-CROSS’s were Iron Man Editions making them even rarer to see. I’m very fortunate to have seen one so well kept and it’s pretty amazing to see a Vehi-CROSS at all in 2024! A Monospace. I only remembered that I had spotted this, last August, after seeing it being pulled into a local garage yesterday for its MOT, which it passed with no advisories on 91,365 miles, which was quite a nice reminder as I haven't spotted anything else yet this year since the Mazda 323 so this prompted a Modus post. I assure that this will hit @raceometer in quite a soft spot too! A monospace is a type of body design, meaning a one-box design, slightly less conventional than your two-box design on a Golf or a three-box design on a Passat, and the monospace is a body style pretty much pioneered by Renault across multiple body styles, the MPV with the original Espace in 1984, the hatchback with the Twingo in 1992, and then the "mini-MPV" with the Scenic in 1996; later followed by the Modus. The Modus was a one-box monospace mini-MPV which was all the rage at the time with a plethora of offerings from a range of manufacturers, most that have now been lost to SUVs :( The Modus took some of its design features from the much-loved Twingo I, clearly illustrated in the headlights, which is definitely a good thing as the Twingo is a brilliant little thing and the Modus isn't too shabby either with its curvaceous and angular lines. The Modus was released with a quite hip and innovative feature, the #bootchute (7), a small opening cut out on the tailgate to help load shopping when the large boot could not be opened in a tight parking area, a nifty little feature, which for reasons unknown, wasn't all that popular and was discontinued when the Modus was facelifted. And of course, as this was a Renault MPV in the 2000s, they had to make a slightly larger version, the Grand Modus, to go alongside the Grand Scenic and Grand Espace, which came 4 years after initial release. Now, this model is a lower specced Expression model, second up from base Authentique trim (9), with the smallest petrol engine on offer (for the pre-facelift), the 1.4 16v with a fairly decent 97hp which was registered in January 2005, just 5 months after launch, making this quite an early example. My boss, @howardkroplick, recently purchased this 1984 Tritan A2 Dominos Pizza Delivery promotional vehicle! They only made 10 of these spaceship trikes (there are only three wheels) for the Domino’s company, and they used to have a pizza warmer behind the driver's seat. It’s powered by a 30-horsepower Air Cooled Rotary engine made by Syvanro (basically a snowmobile engine). Triton told the press when this vehicle was new that I could reach speeds up to 95 mph, and the 0 to 60 took only 17 seconds. This is thanks to its aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of just 0.15, and it also gets 80 miles per gallon. Now, all these might be technically possible achievements, but they did not make a good pizza delivery vehicle. You need a motorcycle license to drive it and think about the typical pizza delivery teenagers. They most likely have just gotten their driver's license. It would be really rare if they also had a motorcycle license. Also, there are multiple blind spots, and you can’t hear anything outside once the canopy is closed, and so on. After three years, Dominos sold them to car museums around the United States. Today, only eight are left, and this one is chassis number 5. Finally got Sven “lowered” 😎 Swipe for footage of me removing springs without a spring compressor 😂 pc: @squimziee The new springs lower the car 25mm in the front and 15mm in the rear, it doesn’t look too noticeable but the handling has greatly improved! The 3 spokes I got will fill out the fender wells much better than the current wheel/tire combo, hopefully I’ll have the three spokes on by radwood! Back in the early 00s, just having a B-segment car wasn’t good enough anymore: mini-MPVs became the shit. My granddad actually owned one of these, and whilst I’ve never really felt a lot for the half-automatic (which was terrible!) facelift base spec Grand Modus he owned, I’ve recently been obsessed with the Modus again. Because of course, if the French were gonna release a supermini MPV in the early 00s, they were gonna put some unique contemporary features on it - and so this Modus ended up with a bootchute. Yes, a bootchute, and I’ve officially become a #bootchutehunter thanks to @martijngizmo and @riceaux90. Because of course, for all those hip and trendy millenials wearing UC of Benetton with matching K-Swiss sneakers and a flashy matching SWATCH watch in the busy city centre of Paris, Berlin, London or Milan in 2006, parking would be tight, and so the large rear boot of the Modus couldn’t be opened. There came in the #bootchute: a smaller opening in the rear hatch that could be easily opened during city parking. Of course, illustrated by Renault in beautiful pictures of a Modus parked against a Mégane 2, and only available at a hefty optional price tag. Let it be said that most Modus buyers were far from trendy millenials, but mostly age-ing babyboomers, that do not need a bootchute on the spacious driveways of their family homes. Renault of course canceled the bootchute when the Modus was facelifted. I shared it with the unofficial Club des Renaults Tristes des Pays-Bas (aka my spotting-sisters @kekkekarren and @plankhond), and we’re now all obsessed with the Modus with a rare bootchute. Anyone bothers to buy me an early Modus Initiale with a double panoramic sunroof and the chute? Planes are cool 😎 I really like this car. I’m kinda thinking about making it faster, lowering it, adding some cool wheels and some other things but I’m not quite sure where to start. It’s an NA 2.1 so I’m not sure if just adding the turbo parts are a possibility or maybe the whole motor needs to be pulled out and built. Any advice? Since my Saab quirks and features got such nice remarks I decided to do one for my 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon GL too. @dougdemuro, can you review this one pretty please? 1. The Vanagon is rear-engined which allows the driver to sit up on the front wheels. For better or worse, I kinda feel every bump on the road but speed bumps are a lot of fun. 2. This gives tremendous space and it’s only 180 inches long. That’s shorter than a current Toyota Corolla. 3. The rear seat turns into a bed, which I’ve slept in a couple times while camping. 4. Powering the Vanagon is a 2.1 liter water-cooled flat four making 90 horsepower and 117 lbs of torque which, teamed to a close-ratio 4 speed manual transmission, is peppier than you’d think. I’m basing this on the fact that I’ve never been honked at…yet. 5. The gauges are pretty straightforward and I really love the “green zone” on the tachometer. It shows the power band of the engine and I view it more than the speedometer when accelerating. 6. This is the pretty ridiculous center console. The left knob controls the airflow under the rear seat. The 4 levers to the right control the front/floor/ceiling vents and heater. The knob to the right of that controls the front vents fan speed. There’s your radio to the right of that and to the right of that is the A/C which actually works. It comes from the ceiling vents. And of course to the right of that is your obligatory cigarette lighter because this is 1990 after all. 3 ashtrays and no airbags. 7. If you want to refill the window washer fluid look under the carpet near the clutch pedal to find it. 8. But what about the rear washer fluid? Was surprised to learn the US was the #CitroenSM’s largest export market, and was the first import Car of the Year in 1972. It carried so much futuristic tech, quirks, and #French weirdness following the iconic DS: #Maserati #V6, variable self-centering power steering, self-leveling adjustable suspension & headlights, pitch control when braking, four wheel disc brakes, glass lens nose treatment, spaceship styling, and ride quality that rivaled the most plush luxury cars. A very stark difference to what American automakers were bringing to the table in the malaise era. At the end of the day though, #Citroen did not stand the test of time on this side of the pond and the SM suffered the same low-production fate as the DS here despite the praise and revolutionary features. The SM later failed to comply with safety regulations and the maintenance and upkeep was infamously difficult at the time. Here’s the last part of the quirks and features of my 1992 Saab 900! 1. Focusing on the interior Saab had an aviation background and you can see it by the high console where everything is within easy reach. That is the original factory Clarion radio, which still works well. Notice the airbag for the driver but none for the passenger. 2. Probably the biggest quirk is the ignition in the middle, which became a Saab trademark. They did this as a safety measure because they felt that in the case of a bad accident your knees wouldn’t get crushed by the bolster and keys. I learned the hard way when I first bought it that in order to take the key out you have to put it in reverse; my key bent but luckily I had a spare. Total rookie mistake. In the middle is also the emergency brake, 5 speed manual shifter, electric window switches, interior light, and a nice coin tray. 3. Because of early airbag technology you had 2 buttons for your horn. Also notice an electric mirror switch for the driver on the left and one for the passenger on the right of the steering wheel. There’s also a heated seat switch and it’s for cloth seats. But it’s just for the driver on the left (which works half the time) though I’ve read that the passenger seat automatically heats if it’s below 50 degrees or so which is almost never in Southern California. 4. The front seats. Nothing too weird here though there’s a lever to adjust the seat height. Passenger seat doesn’t get one. The passenger doesn’t seem to get a lot of the features I’m realizing. 5. The rear seats are also pretty simple with an armrest and of course and ashtray. Actually there are more ashtrays than airbags in the Saab. Priorities, you know. 6. The rear windows don’t roll down but pop out. 7. The original dealer window sticker. This cost over $20K back in 1992 which, adjusted for inflation, comes out to over $42K today! Pretty steep for a base model but as you can see a lot of features were standard including pre-wiring for cruise control but cruise control not actually installed!
