Overdue for a lil sit down and chat with you all out there on the Internets. I'm Jess, the sole person behind Directive- bag maker, admin tasker, post loader, designer, shipping dept and studio vacuumer. 2024 marks 12 years *being* Directive and it's been an absolute rollercoaster ride the whole time (or so it feels). Typically, I am over here white knuckling it all day everyday, but I am slowly learning to let go, trust, and remember to be so damn grateful that I get to make my art, my designs every day. Remind me of that- I often forget how wonderful all of this is and the move to VA combined with general small biz feelings these days definitely still has me feeling unsteady. Some breadcrumbs about me: -I was a voracious reader all of my young life, but a lot of that went away with *adult responsibility* bearing down. Picking up some hobbies again in my mid 30s, though reading is one I am still struggling with. -I greatly enjoy espionage films and shows, sneaky sneaky. -I dislike talking on the phone most times, unless I am driving a long distance, call me then. Blame it on being a receptionist for a few years. -I just recently learned I have been drinking tea all wrong and have corrected that. Now a lil tea party at home with Gonçalo brings me a very special joy. -I secretly want to make a small collection of art (drawings and paintings), but I fear it won't be as strong as the work I made post art school right before I pivoted away from wanting to show my work. 😅 Absolutely wonderful first photo shot by my friend @lizhuntphoto who I met here in Virginia, she makes me look good and genuinely happy! I didn’t go to Paris (😂) and now I’m going back to work! Nice little 5 mile walk yesterday, with a delicious waffle pit stop in the middle of it. It was sunny and mild when we set off and windy and raining by the time we got back! I didn’t have a hood on my bomber jacket so I was pretty wet! As we were leaving the restaurant a lady came up to me and said she loved my jacket, it made me feel great! I’m a big fan of complimenting people on their outfits. Canvas Mini Cubist in the green colorway, worn as a sling bag. A few *deep* Jess thoughts from this week: In the past few days, suddenly it's VERY green here in VA, and it's my favorite shades of green. Freshly unfurled leaves on the trees, thin fronds poking up from thawed earth, and the smell of a mowed lawn. Taking these moments to slow down, when I can. To remember to be present in this day and time, admittedly I am not great at this. Being a leatherworker and a small business means future thinking is priority. The next step in the pattern, the leather and hardware I need to restock, the shipping deadlines, the show coming up (there are quite a few), the customs waiting to be done. All of those require my attention and they will take up any free time I give it, which is probably more than is healthy. I am planning fall and holiday 2024 colors, designs and shows in my head all day and in my dreams. Learning to set boundaries with myself might be one of the more challenging experiences I have in my lifetime, and my brain is currently telling me that I might have learned this earlier (like everything else I wish I had done earlier). But, slowing down. Moments. Take in the moments. Work will be there. I've been reading a book called Enchantment lately, about one person's experience/process of finding wonder in the world again after the last few years. And in the book, they admit sometimes the expectations of wonder get in the way of the actual feeling. I can relate to that, and I can change that slowly.
