A Miombo Initiative foi lançada com o objectivo de proteger e restaurar 1,9 milhões de km² da Floresta de Miombo na Bacia do Zambeze, uma área vital para a estabilidade climática e sustento de mais de 250 milhões de pessoas ao longo de 8 países africanos. Este esforço colaborativo, liderado por Moçambique e apoiado pela WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) e outros parceiros, visa criar um instrumento financeiro inovador para garantir fundos a longo prazo destinados à conservação e restauração dessas importantes florestas. A necessidade urgente de recursos financeiros destaca-se diante da crescente desflorestação e degradação do Miombo, afectando não só a biodiversidade, mas também as economias locais e nacionais, como a de Angola. L’agriculture syntropique, théorisée par Ernst Götsch, un agriculteur et chercheur suisse installé depuis plus de 40 ans dans l’état de Bahia, au Brésil, s’inspire du fonctionnement des forêts pour mettre en place des systèmes agricoles productifs. En imitant la dynamique et la structure des forêts, cette approche vise non seulement la diversification des cultures et la réduction des risques écologiques et économiques mais permet aussi la régénération des paysages. En réhabilitant des terres dégradées, cette méthode crée un environnement arboré productif et riche en biodiversité, sans recours à des intrants externes tels que les pesticides et engrais chimiques. Cette agriculture repose ainsi sur une diversité importante de plantes, cultivées à haute densité, dans leurs conditions optimales de lumière et de fertilité et basée sur une organisation spatiale (stratification) et temporelle (succession) spécifique, également appelée agroforesterie successionnelle. La stratification Dans un milieu forestier naturel, les plantes sont disposées pour capturer efficacement la lumière en formant des strates distinctes : 1. la strate basse, herbacée 2. la strate moyenne, arbustive 3. la strate haute, arborée (canopée) 4. la strate émergente Dans l’agriculture syntropique, les cultures sont agencées de manière à occuper pleinement l’espace vertical (densité élevée) et horizontal (strates), reproduisant ainsi le modèle forestier pour une utilisation optimale de l’espace. La succession végétale En forêt, chaque plante a son propre cycle de vie : certaines ont une vitesse de croissance rapide, quand d’autres passent par un processus de croissance, de reproduction et de déclin plus lent, parfois sur de nombreuses années ou décennies. Par exemple, le cycle de vie du maïs varie entre 60 et 100 jours, alors que le cacaoyer a un cycle de vie plus long. Il lui faut 4 à 5 ans après sa plantation pour produire des fruits.
