She’s saying that I am when the tides are rising, the rivers are rising. There are droughts. And this is my language. This is my alarm to you.” Nenquimo, an Indigenous leader of the Waorani peoples in Ecuador and founder of the nonprofits Ceibo Alliance and #Amazon Frontlines, has focused much of her activism on preserving the Amazon from #deforestation and oil extraction. The warning signs of the climate crisis are a reminder of our collective responsibility to the #Earth, she said in her TIME Earth Award acceptance speech on Wednesday evening, after the honor was presented to her by Peter Seligmann, CEO of nonprofit Nia Tero and chairman of Conservation International. “My people are listening so closely to Mother Earth, and they know that Mother Earth isn’t asking that much from us,” Nenquimo said. “She’s not asking to be saved. She’s asking something very simple. She’s asking that we respect her.” In 2019, Nenquimo led a lawsuit against the #Ecuadorian government that resulted in the protection of 500,000 acres of the #Amazonian rain forest from oil drilling and set a legal precedent for Indigenous communities across the country. Dos Pilas was a visit with mixed feelings, said to be „an archeological park protecting 3.120 hectares of broad-leveled, tall and dense forest“ local people were literally burning down the place all the way to the hieroglyphic steps, where smoke was still waving and chainsaw noise of cutting the trunks, when we arrived. As a perfect symbol even the thatched roof of the park sign was burned down to ashes. Some monkeys were on isolated trees with no connection anymore. All this in a protected area. And this behaviour is not new. The rest of the woods were cleared before and are now private fields including two important sights of Dos Pilas, which are now inaccessable for the public. But this deforestation is the main concern, the land is getting dryer and dryer, which makes farming and cow ranches - the goal of this deforestation - only a short term use. But the consequences will be devastating. Seems we haven’t learned from history and do the same mistakes again, that ended a culture in the classic period. The little sloth only lives on a single island off the coast of Panama (Escudo de Veraguas) in the mangrove forests. 🦥Although the island is uninhabited, people cut down the mangrove forests and hunt the animals to eat or sell them. Residents of Nebraska had been suffering from the consequences of deforestation and decided to begin a movement to restore the essential ecosystem services of trees that had been lost. Charlie Espinosa is a researcher and writer specializing in gold mining in the Amazon basin. He is the lead author of Tracking Amazon Gold, a 50-page report covering impacts and solutions to gold mining in each Amazon country. He has published numerous articles about the gold value chain, including an ongoing series for @Mongabay co-written with Charlie Lyons @cressly300 on such topics as indigenous rights, mining law, and the use of blockchain to trace gold. Charlie has worked with the NGOs Pure Earth to help Peruvian miners transition to cleaner techniques and Amazon Aid to support a multi-stakeholder network on Amazon gold mining. Charlie holds a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Columbia University. In his spare time, he enjoys writing, hiking and playing soccer. Series of silkscreen prints using real ORGANIC COCOA INK. The prints produced by @porta.preta Rio de Janeiro. Only 3 prints of each photo (10 variations) were made. We used @manchaorganica ink on Markatto Stile Avorio 250g paper, size 66 × 96 cm. I went to the Botanical Garden of Rio about a year ago and took close up photos of different tree trunks. I was attracted by the different patterns of the tree barks and so decided to make these into elongated prints just like tree trunks format while adding my usual stroke of International Klein Blue at the bottom of each picture - referencing forestry mark making (trees to be saved).
