Emanation ΑΩ The sunlight was hitting in a way to naturally make these rainbow bands. As it goes, I took a good amount of photos of this, and though they are each different [some ever so slightly], when it comes to choosing it’s usually a struggle. Sometimes the hardest part about posting a photo is deciding — deciding which photo to pick out among all the slight variations. I handwrite the file numbers down, do some editing and then narrow it down from there. When I looked at my screen I noticed I decided to post my first attempt at this shot and the very last which had a different refraction, the Alpha and the Omega ΑΩ - the beginning and the end Enjoy, I found this moment to be magical. MIST BOW 🌫️ 🌈 April 15 2024 What a lovely surprise it was to see this #mistbow at the base of the #waterfalls💦 at #onapingfalls . A mist bow is formed in much the same way as a primary rainbow. 🌈 Light in a mist bow is refracted and reflected by mist (water droplets suspended in the air). I really enjoyed the way the highlights and shadows created a lot of drama in the refracted image. I also went back and forth on editing to remove them from the outer bit in an effort to keep the eye focused solely on the refraction. Ultimately, I just loved how in the 1x1 format crop, the outside highlights pulled me out of the main focus crystal rose and forced me to explore the periphery of the image and then right back in. WHAT IS A RAINBOW? A rainbow occurs when white light passes through a penetrable object, like water, glass, or crystal. The colors that make up white light (ROYGBP) are split and change direction when penetrating the object; this is referred to as refracted. We generally see rainbows when the sun hits raindrops. It is the curvature of the raindrop that bends the light to a 40-42 degree angle. In the case of my first image, my underwater dome port acts as the curve that refracts the light producing a rainbow. At a depth of 25 feet though, we have already lost the color red, so the rainbow appears with cooler colors like blues and greens (2nd image). By adjusting the white balance of the image, these colors become warmer, allowing red and magenta to be present. Rainbows don’t always come in an arch or a circle though, a sun dog can appear in many shapes (3rd image), and even indirect sun light can cause a rainbow effect, in the case of a moonbow where light is reflected off the moon, or light reflecting off snow and penetrating a soap bubble.
