I am extremely happy to say I have achieved a First Class degree in Textile Design at The University of Edinburgh ✨ It has been a very challenging 3 years, both due to completing my final year (& making a full collection) 100% from home and also having to face challenging family health situations. I’ve always believed that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. I couldn’t have done it without my family, friends and al the local and national collaborations. The collection U-turn ensemble is to replace the normal school uniforms with a set of three reversible garments which can be reversed and worn each alternative day. As a result, instead of changing the uniform every single day, the students can reverse it and wear it. This is the sped up version for Look No.11 when it was wheeled onto the runway by @fazleyyaakob. For the finale we wanted to show the adaptive and reversible concept of the outfit which makes for a versatile outfit. Individuals in such circumstances should not be viewed as disabled but differently capable beings. Their needs should not be shunned or treated as taboo but celebrated. This was Look No.11 which deserves special mention as it is a Baju Melayu Johor that is reversible but adapted so that special needs children who have trouble dressing themselves because they have limited use of their hands and muscles, those who are wheelchair bound can still wear our traditional garments with ease. Their care givers also don’t need to struggle to get their charges dressed and cause undue amounts of pain and bruising due to all the pulling and tugging. So much R& D went into all issues that we paid particular attention to when we designed our Adaptive line of clothing. This line means that all children can wear the same design for the same price regardless of how much extra went into designing and adapting. I am especially proud that @threelittleahmads is the first label in Asia to be able to offer this option and spearhead the Inclusive Fashion movement. When this look came on stage i had tears in my eyes backstage as the roar of appreciation and respect erupted throughout the whole of Gandaria City Mall. We went to Jakarta Modest Fashion Week as the underdogs and we had so much to prove. That our nation has designers who think and design fashion for everyone, whatever their circumstances. I hope i did our country proud. Looks 7-10 that we prepared for @threelittleahmads parade at Jakarta Modest Fashion Week, Gandaria City. We were the only label that showcased children’s clothing that were reversible AND adapted so that they could be worn by both able- bodied and special needs children. Since the clothes are all reversible, we wanted to find a way to show this on the runway whilst still keeping to the principles of modesty and protecting the children’s modesty on stage. So we thought, why not let the kiddos walk down the runway with an extra set reversed on a hanger? Then when they get to their blocking points, they can show off the reverse side of what they are wearing. So that is exactly what we did! And the children really did justice on the runway. Words cannot express how proud i am to be here and what an honour it is to represent Malaysia with this little social entrepreneurship that we have started. I have always believed that fashion is for everyone. To be able to spearhead inclusive fashion by catering for the able bodied and disabled is a dream come true. We always think about how normal generic body types would struggle to get dressed in the fashion served by the fashion industry but we always forget how would an individual struggling with autism, muscular dystrophy, paraplegia and quadriplegia fare to get dressed when getting through the day is already a struggle. Just to be able to make getting dressed easier for these individuals is a blessing. To be able to provide a point of rezeki for single mothers who sew our garments is an added bonus.
