This break from work has given me time to dive deeper into the 3 projects I have going on. This one has a dreamy color palette, all from the same fat quarter pack. I'm still very new at quilting and I've never followed a pattern, I've been working backwards, cutting first, planning second. I wanted to maximize my use, and create as few leftover scraps as possible. This 5-pack of fat quarters set me up with a good number of square "blocks" - 6-6.5" and 4-4.5" per fat quarter. I used 1.5" strips to border the 4.5" blocks to make 6.5" blocks. I'm going to supplement these with a solid set of blocks for the background. Wow! @nettledressfilm is a brilliant film, sold out @derbyquad last night - more screenings on 3th and 4th of October 💚 It's a beautiful film, a modern day fable of wondering what if? How can I? A conversation between the ancestors and the living, the land and human hand (a kind, respectful touch), a process, tuning in and willingly alighting on a not-yet-known path. There is loss and grief, but it's not overwhelming, simply honestly shared. There is family, generations going forwards and joy around the kitchen table. My heart broke at the reflection of the desert landscape of intensive farming (something I grieve and pray will change), and how nature thrives at the margins, the edges. And the nettle, we need to bow in respect to this QUEEN! What an honour it is to witness Allan's process and relationship with the plant. His devotion is humbling. These are a one of several linen jogger samples I sewed up in pursuit of the perfect pattern block, and so are essentially unworn! The pattern I landed on has just a tad more ease through the hip and thigh to accommodate my fuller legs. I would love to find these a new home, as I have found them to be so endlessly versatile and essential on days that I need to be comfy, but still put together. The sleeve is a shaped one piece sleeve to follow the natural hang of the arms. “We don’t choose our destiny. It chooses us” ~ Rhaenyra Targaryen It’s taken the best part of 4 and a half months to make, but I can now finally say that it’s finished. Over 500 beads, nearer 1000, have been sewn and glued, 300 of those were handmade by me, then painted to fit in. All the embroidery was done by hand, though the base design for the dragons was machine embroidered first and then hand embroidered over the top. Sewed up this little outfit out of some medium weight cotton Lycra in Dark Teal from @spandexworldinc and made an #adventuretankracerback from @fancytigercrafts and a little #handdraftedpattern skirt with a secret pocket for your cell phone or anything else you want to stash because skirts need pockets, ya’ll! Patterns calls for a serger but I did it all on my regular machine. Next time will sew smaller on seam allowance arm band. Half inch seemed to gobble up the arms. Only top stitched a single row on arms but did double on the hem. 1. Necklace by @joyv28 2. I wanted to make a post about my hand-sewn Portugal dress because I was (am) so pleased with myself. 😁 I had a hard time choosing clothes for our trip because I’ve got a postpartum def-not-snapping-back bod and not much fits and also I’m just not good packer, I inevitably end up with either way too much or I try and be a cool low maintenance babe I’m not and pack way too little and all the wrong things. This time, it was the latter. I had one dress I was hoping to bring but I washed it the night before and hung it to dry and there it remained, forlornly hanging in the dim utility corner as we drove off. So no dress, just boxy button down shirts, a million nursing tanks and black leggings. And it was all WRONG. The weather was glorious! I basically stepped outside and all I wanted was a swishy summer dress! And usually those are a dime a dozen on holiday but not where we were staying - a tiny island that barely had food, let alone dresses! What I DID have, was a spool of good thread, a needle, and four vintage buttons, because I wanted to patch a hole in a shirt I was taking and sew some buttons on a baby sweater. And I had this tablecloth that somehow found it’s way to us from Achim’s mom, one of those things that was just sort of kicking around all his life. It turns out his mom bought it in Texas in 1977, while his dad was doing his flight training there (he was a pilot). Anyway, it was clearly quality, it had held up really well, had very nicely bound edges and a tight weave that feels light and smooth. I had packed it as a beach throw because it folded up so small. So I made it into a dress! To be honest, beyond wanting a dress… I do love a project. 😁 So! Scroll through for some pictures and process videos too. I used almost every square inch of it, literally it was just tiny triangular scraps left, and I utilised all that quality binding too and avoided lots of hemming! One thing I love about hand sewing is how it slows me down so I end up being more planful. The dress even fits perfectly over nursing bra straps and hits at just the right place in the waist because I planned it (and def removed and totally redid the waistband once) that way!

Back in March I made this floor length green daisy print rayon crepe dress to wear to a family celebration using a hand drafted pattern I created inspired by a 1930’s style with rouleau loops and fabric covered buttons down the centre front to just below the waistband, gathered front shoulders and elbow length flutter sleeves. And then I lost a bit of weight… so it doesn’t fit me anymore! 😩 And because of the way I completely finished the gathered bodice into the fully lined inside of the waistband and button plackets there’s no way I’m going to attempt to alter it to fit me now. Back to the drawing board to make a smaller size. Luckily I bought alot of this material when it was half price so dress number 2 is possible, just as soon as I set aside time to sew for myself again 🌼💚 Do I hang on to the original dress? The only photo I’ve got round to taking so far for #memademay2021. I screen printed the skirt with my lovely new gold ink, with the same stencil I cut for my daughter’s pyjamas, based on the rose leaves in the garden. All the fabrics are from @merchantandmills - the top is in a lovely tencel twill which feels like sand washed silk and the skirt is a tencel / linen blend. I drafted both patterns myself, they are very simple although I did make pockets for the skirt. Work in progress - the last piece progressed and I saw a possibility to simplify it. Am still undure about the outcome, but it is a step further. Some works / patterns are very simple to resolve but others are a struggle ^/^ Sometimes is as simple as choosing the colours. Some colours dont work well together and make it more difficult to resolve the design. I know it is best being simple and to the point but not always is possible. What do I do when I’m not sewing? Normally it’s working out what every size will be, how much it’ll cost etc - essentially lots of maths. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 4: On your desk Recently I've been spending lots of time working on the floor on two big boards as a makeshift pattern drafting and cutting table (needs must in tiny flats) which is what I'm up to in this picture ✏ My other desk is my trusty vintage sewing machine 🪡 At my parent's home in Dublin I've got a foldaway cutting table that was made by my dad from an old wardrobe 🪚 (which was made from something else before that). Kaiba coat Mock-up! (Ignore the upholstery fabric). The shape needs a bit of adjusting but I LOVE how the hip bumps came out! I’ve been planning this draft for years (since 2016!) and I was so scared to mock it up. But I’m happy! 🥰 .
