Whether consciously or unconsciously, we might be discriminating against certain segments of society. It’s important to reflect on how such discrimination would feel if directed towards us. Imagine being denied access to basic facilities like bathrooms or being excluded from social spaces like bars or shops based on factors like gender, race, or religion. Consider the pain of knowing your child is barred from playgrounds or denied admission to schools due to these factors. Picture the indignity of being singled out as „special” and being told to your face that the world isn’t ready for your „special requirements.” This is the daily reality for many people living with disabilities, including myself and those close to me. Let’s broaden our perspectives and actively combat ignorance. There’s no excuse for exclusion! Is your workplace designed to be inclusive, or are there barriers that hinder access for some? Do nearby shops and schools accommodate the needs of all individuals, regardless of ability? Is your home building accessible, with features that ensure everyone can navigate freely? Have you encountered gyms with narrow gates that restrict entry for some individuals? Are the accessible entrances to these places centrally located, or do they require navigating around or entering from the back side? Have you seen a street without a ramp or a pole obstructing the pavement? Would you consider tour operators inclusive with proper accessibility features for parents with infants, elderly, injured? Let’s reflect on these questions and advocate for greater inclusivity in our environments. It starts with you. For me, for you, for all 🐾 Love, Kitty #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabledGirl #WheelchairLife #Inclusion #Accessibility #redhair #RedDress #Discrimination #HumanRights #Equality #LoveLife

My book baby is already just over a week old Can I be honest? It's been a weird week. Last week was such a high of joy and adrenaline and pride and an incredible amount of love. And this week has suddenly been quiet and still and solitary I'm still so proud. But when you've worked so hard on something for two years - when it's been your soul focus and you've poured so much of yourself into it - it's hard to let it go. It's hard, too, to trust that it'll reach the right people or spark the change you desperately hope for Still. To write is to trust the process. So go, little book - find your own way. I believe that the right people are out there, waiting for you #theviewfromdownhere #myfirstbook #memoirwriting #disabledwomen #disabilityawareness #disabilityadvocate #disabilitycommunity #disabilitymatters #disabilitypride #disabilityinclusion #disabledandproud #disabledwriters #disabledstories #disabilityreads #ableism #ableismistrash #disabilityrepresentation #ableismexists #ableismawareness #ableism #antiableism #intersectionalfeminism #feminismisforeverybody #feministwriters #diversifyyourbookshelf #weneeddiversebooks #nodiversitywithoutdisability #nofeminismwithoutintersectionality

Part 2 of 2. As a family, we made the decision to move forward with my idea. With my husband by my side we went out to recruit board members and raise money. My son thefrancogianni , drew the GiGi’s Playhouse logo, and in just 5 months we opened the doors to the first Down syndrome awareness center in the country! Today, with 55 brick and mortar locations across the United States and Mexico and 200 inquiries to start new locations all over the world, GiGi's Playhouse is the ONLY network of Down Syndrome Achievement Centers. I have to say having GiGi was like a true love story. It started out with devastation and fear and ended with a love like I have never known. Without living it I would never have understood that. I am just glad that gigisplayhouse has turned into a place where people can see the other side of Down syndrome. As for _gigigianni_ ?! She is rockin’ that extra chromosome! She is an avid texter, hip hop dancer and over all rock star!! Her brother and sisters worship her! I only wish I would have known how amazing life with her was going to be!! When GiGi was growing in my belly, I told my husband that this baby was going to change the world. And boy, was that an understatement. THANK YOU for listening to #mydsstory and for being here. Without the support of all of you, there would be no gigisplayhouse. Please DOUBLE TAP this post if you’re along for the ride. Then head up to my stories if you want to submit YOUR Down syndrome story. Because I want to hear it. #downsyndromeawareness #downsyndromeawarenessmonth #downsyndromerocks #disabilityadvocate #advocatelikeamother #advocate

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to post those Autism advocacy videos as planned due to life’s chaos. However, I’m focusing on getting my life back on track, especially my mental and physical health. Please join our Fellowship and register to walk with us on May 11th! We are raising money for the Childrens Inn at NIH. The Children’s Inn is an organization that provides stay for children with medical conditions, disabilities and other chronic diseases, who are patients at the National Institute of Health. The Childrens Inn has activities, accommodating rooms, a shuttle bus to take you to and from the grocery store and other trips, a game room, computer room, and a bunch of other amenities that the children can use to pass their time. Spinny used to travel to DC at the NIH for medical treatment and would stay at the Childrens Inn during his time there. It is a great institution and we are very grateful to be able to raise money for them, 20+ years down the line. The May Spinny Brand: Gifted & Disabled Summer Bash is on Saturday, May 18, at Four Corners Brewing Co! ♿️ VENDOR SPOTLIGHT ♿️ Please welcome @adapt.abilities! Adapt Abilities sells Switch adapted toys and devices for people with disabilities. Hannah tells us about her journey, life and passion for helping the disability community! “Hi! I’m a licensed SLP and AAC/AT specialist who worked in school settings for 5 years and a proud Baylor alum for both my BA and MA. I’m proud to be a female small business owner, a person with disabilities, and a licensed practitioner who you can trust really understands you and/or your children’s needs. My experience has always overflowed into my passion for the disabled community, and now as the mother of two beautiful boys with disabilities, this passion runs even stronger. Our journey together has been filled with twists and turns and many obstacles, including recently moving to DFW after living my whole life between two other cities in order to get the best support for my children. I’m thankful for all the professionals, caregivers, and fellow disabled people who support me and my family, and I feel blessed to be able to help others through AdaptAbilities. When not working, I’m probably reading self-help books, binge-watching true crime shows, or spending quality time with my lovely husband Grant and my two boys. Feel free to message me or say hello if you see me at a conference or trade show!!” The May Spinny Brand: Gifted & Disabled Summer Bash is on Saturday, May 18, at Four Corners Brewing Co! I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user! I have decided I want to share my stories and experiences about being a young, disabled woman. I've never really spoken about the struggles I face everyday, from basic tasks to people's negative, judgemental opinions, but I think now is the time to post my stories to educate more people. I will now be using my Instagram to share updates on my disabilities, with of course a few more selfies to feel empowered 😏 I feel its the right time to express my views, feelings on the subject and support others to help understand different conditions. Just because I don't use a wheelchair everyday, doesn't mean I'm faking it; invisible disabilities exist. I hope you will enjoy my future content and I'm excited to share my journey with you 💕

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills (the ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way). CP usually is caused by brain damage that happens before or during a baby's birth, or during the first 3 to 5 years of a child's life. This brain damage also can lead to other health issues, including vision, hearing, and speech problems; and learning disabilities. There is no cure for CP, but treatment, therapy, special equipment, and, in some cases, surgery can help kids who are living with the condition. Cerebral palsy is one of the most common congenital (existing at or before birth) disorders of childhood. About 500,000 children in the United States have the condition. The three types of CP are: spastic cerebral palsy — causes stiffness and movement difficulties dyskinetic (athetoid) cerebral palsy — leads to involuntary and uncontrolled movements ataxic cerebral palsy — causes a problem with balance and depth perception Because cerebral palsy affects muscle control and coordination, even simple movements — like standing still — are difficult. Other functions that also involve motor skills and muscles — such as breathing, bladder and bowel control, eating, and talking — also may be affected when a child has CP. TELLING OUR STORY: One of the things that I am always encouraging CP parents to do, because of its positive influence on other parents, is to cease every opportunity to tell their story, which is what happened when a team from an international media organisation came to shoot a documentary on, 'A day in the life of Olaoluwa, our 22 year-old non-verbal and fully dependent son living with Cerebral Palsy. It all started with a casual contact in November 2018 and after numerous telephone and e-mail interviews, and a physical visit 3 weeks earlier, a highly professional team arrived with an impressive array of equipment and spent over 7 hours with us capturing essential aspects of his day and interviewing members of the family. The questions were probing, the answers sincere and I believe the final production will be a great addition to the body of knowledge on Disability Management in Africa!🙏🏾👌🏽🙌🏾👍🏾💪🏾🤗💚🌹🎯💯✅ #documentary #testimony #cerebralpalsy #cerebralpalsyawareness #disability #disabilityawareness #specialneedschild #specialone #nonverbal #dependent #specialneedsfamily #specialneedssibling #media #professional #television #interview #filming #recording #news #feature #story #disabilityadvocate #disabilityisamindthing #disablednotless #differentisbeautiful

FLASH BACK TO 24TH APRIL 2019!

Today is Undiagnosed Day! Undiagnosed Day aims to raise awareness for the undiagnosed rare disease community, among both the general public and decision-makers, about undiagnosed rare diseases and the emotional, physical and financial impact they have on the lives of individuals and their families. This year's theme is Building the Undiagnosed Community: Global Perspectives and Shared Action, which aims to highlight the importance of fostering international collaboration and addressing the unique needs of undiagnosed communities worldwide, including the 1 in 10 Americans living with an undiagnosed, ultra-rare, or rare disease. meaningful inclusion has to start in childhood. generations of non-disabled kids continue to go through their education assuming there must be a good reason that disabled kids are always kept in classrooms “over there”… the impact of that othering has devastating consequences in creating adults who don’t see the humanity and sameness in disabled folks. let’s imagine a better world where disabled people get to feel a sense of BELONGING. #disability #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabilityJustice #CenteringDisability #DisabledJoy #DisabledLivesAreWorthy #DisabledChild #Ableism #JustSayDisabled #AntiAbleist #DisabledIsNotABadWord #Inclusion #SpecialEducation #Community #Belonging

On Thursday, I had the privilege of visiting the Pennine Day Centre in Hull, to spend some time with their service users, and see their amazing Makaton Choir. It was fun joining in with them, and admittedly brought a lump to my throat when they signed along to 1000 years, as this was the first song I learned and signed to Ada-Grace as a baby, and was absolutely the song which catapulted me into this wonderful world of Makaton I'm hoping to return in a few weeks when they'll have a new song to share 😊 thanks to my sister for helping to set this up for me #makaton #wetalkmakaton #makatonfriendly #makatonchoir #learnsomethingneweveryday #makingmemories #disabilityawareness #inclusionmatters #disabilityadvocate

Self-care is one of the most unselfish things you can do — for yourself and those around you. We live in a world that constantly demands our attention. It's crucial to take time to recharge, not out of selfishness, but from a place of recognizing our own worth and prioritizing our well-being. When we take care of ourselves, we're better equipped to show up for others and be the best version of ourselves. I attended a huge street fair that my city put on, and thankfully my partner had the foresight to insist that I bring my new set of headphones with me. I’ve been struggling a lot with sensory overload, specifically with sound (largely related to my autism), and while my Loops work in some situations, they just don’t cut it for me in louder environments. Personally, I’ve been a bit nervous about wearing headphones in public, grappling not only with my own internalized ableism, but also fearing that it wouldn’t allow me to engage in my hypervigilance (being aware of everything going on around me at all times [thanks, PTSD]). Still, I brought the headphones to the fair, and I’m glad I did.  The street fair was incredibly loud and busy, and while fun, it was also A LOT to take in, so wearing the headphones was a blessing. It softened and slowed everything down for me, and it made me ask myself why I haven’t used these sooner. Sure, I got a few looks, but that also could have been because of the service dog or because of my mask, (because I am one of the last few people masking in TN). But honestly, it was worth it, because between the all of hustle and bustle, the loud sounds and smells, and all of the people and dogs that lunged at Rico, my anxiety levels would have been through the roof and I would have been tremendously overstimulated from this fair had it not been for these headphones. So moral of the story? If there is a tool that you have that is designed to help you that you’re struggling to use, whether that’s reading glasses, headphones, a service dog, medication, or a mobility device, go for it. You might surprise yourself and realize that it might make life a lot easier.  (accessibility description in comments) #Disabled #Disability #ChronicIllness #ChronicIllnessAwareness #Spoonie #DisabilityActivism #DisabilityRights #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabilitySupport #DisabilityBlogger #Autism #AuDHD #ADHD #NeuroDivergent #ActuallyAutistic #ServiceDog #TaskTrainedServiceDog #MedicalAlertServiceDog #ServiceDogsOfInstagram #ServiceDogsOfIg #ServiceDogHandler #ServiceDogHandlersOfInstagram #ServiceDogHandlersOfIg #GoldenRetrieverServiceDog #GoldenRetriever

Do you take trips WITHOUT your child? Marc and I just did and it was lovely and SO needed. This trip highlighted just how much I think about Ben on a daily basis. Really, ALL. THE. TIME. Basically, all the minutes of all the days. Walking through Amsterdam I was amazed how many times I found myself thinking things like: “We couldn’t bring Ben here because there is no way he could navigate these steep, narrow stairs” or “These streets would be so tough for Ben because the bricks are all uneven and he would trip.” I thought about him when we were at restaurants “If we had Ben we’d definitely need to sit inside instead of on the street,” and SO MANY others times when my brain noticed things that would be tricky for him. I also thought “Ben would have LOVED that bus ride,” and “I can imagine how happy Ben would be to run through this park,” and “Ben would LOSE HIS MIND if he ate this waffle”… …Cause waffles are his favorite. But that’s not the point I’m trying to make. As caregivers and parents to a disabled child, we put incredible amounts of effort into navigating the world for our child. So much so, that even when we’re on vacation without him, it feels natural to me to still navigate the world as if he was. I love Ben so much and am happy to help him navigate this world that is not always set up for his success. Taking a break from caregiving—while I knew he was in very capable hands—was exactly the reset I needed. When you’re in the thick of the day-in day-out of caring for your disabled child, you may not realize just how much you’re carrying. It can be a lot. It’s important to take care of yourself. That’s really the best way to take care of your child. Love, Chardell
