MOTMOT (Turquoise-browed) COSTA RICA has been a bucket-list item for a number of years and I was privileged to visit earlier this month on yet another fantastic Road Scholar excursion that promised, and certainly delivered, ……… ‘motmots to quetzals.’ Under the expert guidance of our terrific tour leader Andrey (@the_wandering_guide ) we encountered motmots (the Lesson’s Motmot on day one) and the Resplendent Quetzal (on the final two days)..… and over 240 bird species in-between. The country’s official species list is an incredible 932 ! Green, blue, black, orange and turquoise color-mix and interesting racket-tails on this (nesting ?) motmot pair spotted on our Tarcoles River excursion was one of numerous highlights that I hope to share over the next few weeks …………. just as the Central Park’s Spring migrants are attracting my attention currently. I consider myself a full-time writer but, actually, I spend a few weeks every year living in nice hotels and leading small groups on wee adventures in Spain and France - and in fact I’ve been leading groups for 22 YEARS! How did that happen!?! 🥾 Just left Barcelona - check out the blue sky over @casabatllo - and for the next two weeks I’m hiking the wild coast of Catalonia from Girona to the French border with 16 clients from across the US. I’ve spent loads of time here with Mari (see last pic) and it’s a real delight to share these places with others. In May of last year, Peter and I got to visit the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on this date in 1968. Today, the motel is the site of the National Civil Rights Museum, and being there is a profoundly moving experience with echoes that still resonate today. I'm so grateful we've been able to travel more in recent years both here and abroad. It really is one thing to read about history and places like this and another to be there and feel them in your bones. Looking forward to our Utah Canyons trip next month.
WHALE (Humpback) A highlight of our March 21 Road Scholar excursion to Santa Cruz Island from Ventura Beach aboard an Island Packers vessel was this amazing encounter with a tail-slapping humpback whale. The migration north (for humpbacks, gray and other whales) unfortunately follows the shipping channel between the California coast and the group of Channel Islands so it’s quite probable that the occasional ship strike might occur ; glad it was avoided this time ! Happy Whale recorded my sighting (8 & 9) ; one of many that Island Packers encounter every day during their whale watch season. Upon our return to shore I checked their prior day’s statistics board ; on March 20th their vessels reported 21 humpbacks, 8 gray, 4 minke whales, 1 fin whale, 2 Dall’s porpoises and 2210 common dolphins ! I was hoping for Orcas since we missed seeing the six that were reported on the 19th (the day of our earlier excursion to Santa Cruz Island.) Jekyll - the resort of the millionaires like Rockefeller and Vanderbilts, the eerie Driftwood Beach, shrimping on the Lady Jane, the St. Simon’s lighthouse, entertainment by the Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters, seeing the landing site of the next to the last slave ship -the Wanderer- arriving in America, the phenomenal environmental work being done on Sapelo Island, and an equally phenomenal meal prepared for us there by a descendant, the sea turtle rehab center, and more. In the triclinium of the oldest houses in Pompeii it is sometimes possible to see a hole. it was used to drain the water when washing the floor.
