In 2018, the mountain presented a week full of special moments and challenges. It started off with an incredible display of clouds on the first practice day that covered the valleys and cities below, forming spectacular backdrops as cars raced above 12,000 feet. The clouds continued to sweep the mountain the following practice morning, blanketing segments of the upper section with thick fog one moment and clearing the next. Finally, spectators perched at Devils Playground ready for Race Day enjoyed the high-altitude sunrise illuminating the entrance to 16 Mile. While the Start Line crowd sought out shade to keep cool from the clear, sunny skies, folks at the Summit bundled-up for a cool summer snowstorm. The rapid weather changes can dissuade a number of challengers, but when the stars align and the mountain decides to cooperate, history can happen: @romaindumas_official rocketed the Volkswagen I.D. Essentiellement connu pour sa carrière en circuit (victoires aux 24h du Mans, de Spa, de Daytona et du Nurburgring, champion du monde d'endurance, vainqueur de l'ALMS...), Romain a également beaucoup rouler en rallye. Victoire historique de #Porsche aux #Daytona24 aujourd'hui avec entre autres le Brésilien #FelipeNasr ancien de la F1 et #JosefNewgarden un des Rois en #Indycar au volant. Historique parce que le constructeur allemand attendait depuis 2003 de retrouver la plus haute marche du podium en Floride. Plus historique encore car le Team qui engage cette voiture est la mythique écurie #Penske et que Roger Penske n'avait gagné jusque là les 24 Heures de Daytona qu'une seule fois, en 1969. Il y a 55 ans avec son pilote fétiche Mark Donohue ! Quelle joie cela doit être pour le légendaire patron américain. Autres satisfaits de leur course, quelques grands noms de la course automobile qui ont brillé ce week-end. On citera #JensonButton qui monte sur le podium au général pour sa première apparition mais aussi #RomainDumas qui a pu, un moment, caresser l'espoir d'un très gros exploit et qui termine 5ème ou encore #TomDillmann à qui sa première participation rapporte une jolie 4ème place en #LMP2 associé à un autre Brésilien lui aussi ancien de la F1, Pietro #Fittipaldi .
