What else am I up to? 😅 I’m singing with Gadsden Symphony Orchestra on June 1st! A lovely ending to a very busy month doing weddings! GSO was the very first orchestra I performed with live in concert, and I’m so excited to be back home sharing music with those that I know and love in my hometown area! This piece is one of the most difficult and rewarding works I’ve had to learn. I really had to figure out how to sing in my middle voice, and how to…COUNT. I would like to dedicate this performance to my Great Grandmother in heaven. The novelist, James Agee, that wrote the text this work is based off of depicts the last year his family had his father before his father passed away in a tragic accident. The year was 1915. Samuel Barber also set the text to music during a very tumultuous time in his life when his own father’s health was deteriorating. This piece reflects the joys of being a child in the country south while also foreshadowing the hustle and bustle of the Industrial Revolution. The United States replaced porch talk and slow living with trains and technology. It reminds me of those simpler times with my own great grandmother playing in her house and eating snacks before I went to school and life got busy for me. Stravinsky once said, " I haven't understood a bar of music in my life, but I have felt it." Some of my most intimate moments have been in this building listening to the most beautiful sounds produced by instruments. From sobbing tears and chills "goosebumps ", to my heart fluttering as it's trying to sync with my brain to forever remember this majestic and most graceful elegant moment. Over the years whether I shared these moments with friends or in the confinement of my own solitude, they are by far some of the most treasured times of my life. Music has a way of speaking for us when we have no words to describe how we feel. From the somber sorrows of Adagio for Strings to the triumphant crescendo in Firebird, there is no other feeling other than being present in the moment and for a TINY MINISCULE fraction of my life....I am at peace. Meet the guest artists of Earth & Sky! Tenor Opal Clyburn-Miller is in the midst of a rich career as a chamber singer and soloist in the Washington, D.C., area. Notable engagements have included: participant in the Aspen Music Festival’s Professional Choral Institute with Seraphic Fire, chorus member in the Washington National Opera’s production of Il Trovatore, and Vocal Fellow with The Thirteen. Most recently, they performed in Opera Lafayette’s chorus on a Baroque double bill of Rameau’s Io and Pierre de la Garde’s Leandre et Hero. Opal has a relationship with many churches in the D.C. area, most notably Washington National Cathedral, regularly appearing for Evensong and featuring in larger concert works such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Poulenc’s Sept Répons des Ténèbres. And in the summer of 2023, they attended both Bach Akademie Charlotte (BWV 36, 62, 132) and the American Bach Soloists Academy (BWV 78, 198, 243). Comfortable with solo operatic repertoire, Opal has played Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), Tamino (The Magic Flute) and Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress), and in January 2024, they performed the role of Damon in Opera Henriette’s production of Acis and Galatea. Opal is pursuing their master’s at the Peabody Institute, studying with American soprano Tony Arnold. A Baltimore-based composer, poet, vocalist, and mult-instrumentalist, his work has garnered acclaim for its poignancy and thematic relevance. Drawing inspiration from nature, memory, and our most urgent contemporary questions, David’s music opens space for emotion and contemplation. His compositional catalogue inhabits the liminal space between tradition and innovation, abstract and concrete, highly structured and ever evolving aleatory. His creative spirit and flair for the dramatic thrive on collaboration with artists across various media, including visual arts, poetry, contemporary choreography, and theatrical arts. This interdisciplinary approach enriches his work, fostering a dynamic fusion of artistic expression. Captivating audiences across North America and Europe, David has received commissions from and had his works performed by the Handel Choir of Baltimore, Fifth House Ensemble, Trio Mythos, Cantala Treble Choir, and the New Voices Choir. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in composition from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Joanne Metcalf and Asha Srinivasan. OTD in Music History: American composer and organist John Knowles Paine (1839 - 1906) is born in Maine. While his music is rarely heard today, Paine holds the distinction of being the first American-born composer to achieve international fame for writing large-scale orchestral music. Paine was the “senior member” of the so-called "Boston Six" -- a loosely affiliated group of American composers who were active around the turn of the 20th Century in and around Boston. The other five members of this group were Arthur Foote (1853 - 1937), George Chadwick (1854 - 1931), Edward MacDowell (1860 - 1908), Horatio Parker (1863 - 1919), and Amy Beach (1867 - 1944). Although they have now mostly been relegated to footnotes in music history textbooks, the "Boston Six" were pivotal figures in the gradual development of a distinctly American concert music idiom. All of them were strongly influenced by the German Romantic tradition, and their works were all published by Arthur P. Schmidt -- the most important American music publisher operating during that period. Paine’s list of professional accomplishments is both lengthy and impressive: The well-received world premiere of his “Mass in d minor” (1867) in Berlin gave him an international reputation which served him very well upon his return to America, and the pioneering courses in music appreciation and music theory that he taught during his long tenure at Harvard University (he was the first Professor of Music appointed there and he held that seat for more than 40 years) helped to influence collegiate-level music education program across the country. Paine also served as a Director of The New England Conservatory of Music, and he was one of the founding members of the “American Guild of Organists.” Paine Hall (the primary concert hall that services Harvard's Department of Music) is named after him. I had a splendid week playing Barber Violin Concerto with chamber.orchestra.phila and Maestro dirkbrosse. To anyone new here: I have all of my concert garments custom designed for the concert/music that I perform. As such, each violin concerto has its own design, and this is the one for Barber. Barber cherished nature and felt inspired by his natural surroundings. He began working on the violin concerto in the late summer of 1939 in Switzerland, where he was surrounded by snow-covered, “dazzling white” mountain peaks and “wild and romantic scenery”. Though the rise of the Nazis forced him to end his trip prematurely, he continued to find natural inspiration for his writing closer to home, in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. There’s an earthly freshness to Barber’s violin concerto that is unique among violin concerti. Whenever I hear or play the opening of the piece, I am reminded of that moment in the film, “The Sound of Music”, when Julie Andrews sings on a hilltop: “The hills are alive with the sound of music…” and all around her stand the pure and magnificent beauty of the Austrian mountains. Intended or not, it feels as though Barber perfectly captured the essence of such scenery that was so similar to his own when he began writing this piece, and painted the emotions awakened by the landscape with his notes. And these are some of the influences in my designer’s creation. Shades of green and bluish-purple references to capture the depth of foliage; mountainside trees appear on a wide spectrum of green depending on the way the light and shadows hit on a given summer day. There’s some light in there, too, represented by hints of yellow and ivory. And the whole garment has a tailored look, as Barber was remarked to have always behaved like a gentleman. Including our own Principal Cello Rebecca Gilliver taking centre stage in Donghoon Shin’s Cello Concerto. 10 April – Sir Antonio Pappano returns for his first Half Six Fix of 2024 in which we perform the complete ballet of #Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé alongside luscious sounds of Tenebrae. 11 April – We welcome the trumpet legend Alison Balsom to the Barbican to perform the UK Premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ Trumpet Concerto. With the second half of the concert featuring Daphnis and Chloé again this is certain to be a dazzling evening. 14 April – Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No 2 contains some of the most beautiful evening he ever wrote. This evening see’s Pappano conduct us through the passionate symphony, Lili #Boulanger’s sparkling D’un matin de printemps and violin virtuoso Janine Jansen takes on #SamuelBarber’s lyrical Violin Concerto. 17 April – Pappano’s second Half Six Fix comes in the form of #VaughanWilliams’ Symphony No 5. This sophisticated, original work deeply moved audiences who heard it at its 1943 premiere as it called for peace in the midst of war. 18 April – Pianist extraordinaire Bertrand Chamayou features as a part of his LSO Artist Portrait with a performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a work full of Spanish panache and American jazz. OTD in Music History: American composer, pedagogue, and arts administrator George Chadwick (1854 - 1931) dies in Boston. Chadwick is best known today as a member of the so-called "Boston Six" -- a loosely affiliated group of American composers who were active around the turn of the 20th Century in and around Boston. The other five members of this group were John Knowles Paine (1839 - 1906), Arthur Foote (1853 - 1937), Edward MacDowell (1860 - 1908), Horatio Parker (1863 - 1919), and Amy Beach (1867 - 1944). Although they have now largely been relegated to footnotes in music history textbooks, the "Boston Six" were pivotal figures in the gradual development of a distinctly American concert music idiom. All of them were strongly influenced by the German Romantic tradition, and their works were all published by Arthur P. Schmidt -- the most important American music publisher operating during that period. Chadwick composed five string quartets, three symphonies, several operas and concert overtures, and a host of songs and choral anthems... but none of his original music is heard with any regularity today. Instead, his most enduring legacy undoubtedly lies in his pedagogical and administrative efforts. In 1897, Chadwick was appointed Director of New England Conservatory, and his tenure there was critical in transforming the NEC into one of the most important and respected music conservatories in America. (His students also included notable African-American composers Florence Price [1887 - 1953] and William Grant Still [1895 - 1978].)
