As an early birthday present, Jaimie booked me a spot at Savi's Workshop, to build my own deluxe lightsaber. The experience is quite involved, with an engaging story and fully immersive setting. The style I chose was Protection/Defense, with ornate silver/gold/copper designs. I picked a green kyber crystal because I have other lightsabers of every other color. I'm very happy with the final product. It's a solid piece, and looks just as good as any Force FX or Black series lightsaber. I know I mentioned in a previous post that DHS gets static for seeming to be Disney’s IP park, and I was definitely one of those people who felt that way after hearing about the expansion plans. But after taking the time to watch the original 6 Star Wars films, I quickly fell in love with the characters and the overall lore of Star Wars. 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦.” I recently listened to Andrew Garfield discuss portraying a major and beloved pop-culture character and story. His view is that there’s a responsibility of the film industry as the most widespread storytellers. These well-known and accessible stories and characters are our present-day mythology and folk tales. There is the spectacle and the wealth accrued, but there is also a responsibility to tell stories that give meaning to millions of developing minds. These stories can provide inspiration and values for children to carry through to adulthood. They can give us a deeper understanding of ourselves in our formative years; what we could be in our ordinaries and extraordinaries. Some of my favorite Star Wars stories were a part of developing my values. In the present day, the themes from these stories contextualized my feelings and my desire to actively protest against our country’s complicities, and to educate others on how to advocate for change, rather than feel hopeless or powerless. I think about how, after Finn has done good and forged meaningful relationships at the beginning of his story, he considers his part in the war done, and tries to leave the Resistance. He learns the Resistance is complicit in maintaining the damaging power structures they fight against in part by purchasing weapons from the same arms dealers that manufacture weapons for the Fascistic oppressors. He meets Rose who, like him, was raised in hardship. She is dedicated to resisting the opposing force that subjugates and facilitates the suffering of the underprivileged. Finn learns to value resistance, and begins to make his rebellion all-consuming, at the sake of his own life. His final lesson is not to submit to despair and use his life as a weapon, but to use his humanity to fight for a better and more equitable world.

✨Stars Wars week continues! You can build your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop or your own little droid buddy at Droid Depot in Galaxy’s Edge! 🗡️At Savi’s Workshop, you are taken with a group (about 14 builders) to a secret hideout in a cave. You will choose one of four specific hilts for your saber. The guide goes through each piece and talks as you build it. Then the Force guides you as you choose your kyber crystal (the piece that lights the color of your saber). Near the end, you are visited by a special familiar guest and have a ceremony where you all light your sabers at the same time (it’s really cool). Some things to know. These ARE NOT TOYS. They are very heavy and something to display, not fight with. Recommended age is 5 and up (although my personal recommendation is older than that - at least pre-teen so they understand it’s not a toy). You receive a carrying case for your saber. One guest can accompany the builder. The saber costs $249.99 plus tax, which now has to be paid at the time the reservation is made (ps. I make those reservations for you). You can buy extra kyber crystals to change out the color of your lightsaber at Dok Ondar’s. 🤖Droid Depot is fun for all ages. You can pick between the two styles of astromech units: the R-series (the R2-D2 style) or the BB-series (the BB-8 style). You are given a blueprint of the needed parts and then you head to the conveyor belt. All different color parts are rolling past you as you make choices for what you want your droid to look like. After you gather all needed parts, you head to a building station where a guide is located if you need assistance. You choose a personality chip for your droid (don’t worry, you can buy extra chips). When you’re finished, you receive a cardboard box to transport your new buddy, or you can pay extra for the special backpack carrier. The droid costs $119.99 plus tax, which has to be paid at the time the reservation is made (ps. I make those reservations for you as well).
