Happy House is an installation that arrives as part of Singapore Art Week 2022, and explores just what happiness means to multi-disciplined artists taking part in the exhibition. Running from January 14 - 23, the warehouse installation features work from 17 emerging artists, incorporating work from the realms of video, visual arts, animation, and music. The featured artists each share their personal understandings of happiness alongside submissions of a selection of their own happy memories â inviting the audience to explore their personal relationships with the most coveted emotion. One of my favourites from #SingaporeArtWeek is the series of works by Singapore artist Ivan David Ng (@ivandavidng) shown at #UNTAPPED2021 and @theorchidthewasp. The vibrant works is a collage of two-dimensional materials Ng collected during his travels woven together to create a visual tapestry, and finished with a coat of resin to achieve the look of a painting. A poetic moment with @dawn___ng âs Perfect Stranger (2018). The work compiles of a series of conversations in a span of a year between, then, two strangers - the artist and an Israeli psychologist. Presented in itâs entirety for the first time, the sheets of paper, ebbing in words and gradient hues, are laid on white plinths of the same size. Scenes of Malaya and Nanyang in Georgette Chenâs oeuvre is possibly the height of her practice, characterised by vibrant contrasting colour often accompanied by breezy bright blue sky. This painting captured a Malay wedding procession happening in front of Singaporeâs NAFA in 1962, where Chen taught as a teacher. We can truly feel the communal joy and celebration of a Malay wedding in the 1960s. Families dressed to the nines, gathering with their children and eating together under a large tent in the centre of the painting. Men and children spectating the band with a violin and a cello in hand, playing what would be the latest hits of the 60s. Thereâs even people peeking on to the scene from the second floor shop house window in the background. Even Chen, the painter, is one of those spectating on to the joyous occasion and translating it on to canvas. The pandemic outbreak this year saw regulations limiting weddings to a 50 to 100 people capacity in Singapore. How does this impact me? Iâm a sarcoma patient, I have been for two years. âĢ âĢ Aged 31, I presented at my GP surgery with a mysterious expanding lump on my ribs. Never would I have guessed that it would be a rare variant of tumour. I began 2018 hopeful that Iâd fix my then-sprained ankle and be onwards and upwards, rather than gaining a new (and much scarier) thing to worry about. âĢ âĢ But this is what I was dealt. I went from having to google my condition to having surgery for it in three months flat. Iâve been permanently divested of 50% of my six-pack muscle, because thatâs where the tumour had decided it wanted to live. And I remain under review for a condition which has a vicious recurrence rate. âĢ âĢ I share this story openly, because itâs about empowerment. Itâs about looking after yourself, ensuring you get the right treatment, and taking an active role in your physical and emotional recovery. Itâs a never ending journey, and one which will teach you as much as it tests you. Itâs full of tears and laughter. Our second work at Sofia Art Week 2020 was in âThe Temporary Matrixâ, curated by @ne.hristo A pop-up exhibition that took place from 22nd to 25th of September, in one of the most mythical places from the 90âs - the famous computer cafe-clubs - the Matrix. The main concepts of the show were the abandoned spaces, the illusion of reality, the virtual world, and the disorientating nature of the matrix - âWhen passing outside its territory, the doubt remains whether we are already out of the temporary matrix or we are just getting an idea of it.â We contributed to the exposition, intervening with the space in the entrance hall and few parts of it which were selected specifically: The central part was the mural âMatrixâ- sitting between public and the private, the graffiti/street art environment, and the fine art gallery space, so close and yet so far, the only border of which was the dimmed window. Installation of objects from our previous work âLetters Unheard, Voices Unseenâ was placed right in front of the showcase to emphasize our connection with the urban space. The column in front of the mural formed an optical illusion of the letters âATRâ that are part of the word Matrix and could be misspelled as âARTâ. There are few other objects such as a signal cone lamp, blanc canvas, and empty frame. At the left side of the mural, a smooth transition from calligraphy writings, few objects connected to the âcon-tempo-raryâ aesthetics that lead the viewer to a small composition of 3D sculpted letters and respiratory mask, sitting on top of boxes written in calligrams.
