📽 ALIEN (1979) 45th Anniversary In March, I attended HOW HOLLYWOOD PORTRAYS WOMEN, an education (and not too surprising) of how women are mostly shown in film. The session was led by KELLI MARSHALL of @chimovietours. She challenged us to name a movie where the female lead broke the mold. We couldn't. One of her best examples was ALIEN. After successfully kidnapping a young ballerina, a group of criminals is tasked with hiding out in an isolated mansion while waiting for her father to agree to a $50 million ransom. What they don’t realize is that none of them pose a threat to the little girl; in fact, they are the ones in danger. The trailer for this film didn’t grab my attention much, but after hearing so many positive things about it, I decided to head to the theaters and give it a watch. I didn’t expect to have such a good time with it, and I’m very surprised to say it’s great. From the fantastic cast to the comedy, kills, and gore, this film at first felt somewhat tame, but as it progresses so much happens to the crew it’s hard not to feel bad for them. I loved the way it ended up turning out, and there were many moments towards the middle to the end where I had a big grin on my face. Not many horror movies achieve this for me, but I ended up having a blast, and I even went by myself. I will no doubt revisit this film once I add it to the collection and would love to go see it one more time before it leaves theaters with my lady, who I’m sure will enjoy it just as much as me. I’m very surprised by this little horror comedy, and it’s one of my favorite films of the year so far. I suggest listening to the word of mouth and going to see it to support everyone in the film, along with hopes for a possible sequel. I just finished this a little bit ago and I’m pretty sure I saw it a long time ago when it was originally released in 2003 - I must have blocked it from memory because it’s familiar, and it definitely scared the hell out of me this time around watching it In typical Korean horror fashion, it’s slow-paced storytelling with moments of terrifying and unexpected imagery comes in waves, lets you relax again for a bit, and then punches you in the face just as you start to let your guard down again with new images more frightening than the last Loosely based on the Korean fairytale ‘Janghwa Hongryeon Jeon’, it definitely delivers on psychological and supernatural terror through themes of adolescence, motherhood, jealousy, grief and mental illness I really liked this a lot and I’m pretty sure The Uninvited was the American adaptation of this story which was just alright. It really has nothing on its Korean counterpart. This really freaked me out, and I have to say, the storytelling is exceptionally crafted and delivers - the whole film just breathes a feeling of uneasiness because of the excellent camera work and lighting - you almost feel sucked into insanity watching it because of the stylized cinematography and weird, creepy camera positioning and angles used throughout - definitely complimenting the storytelling well The ending of the film is great - nice little twist that is both surprising and sad as the realization of mental illness comes full circle - I enjoyed this film and yet probably won’t sleep very well tonight 😬 🖤✨💀✨🖤 #koreanhorror #ataleoftwosisters #supernatural #scary #horrorfilm #slowburn #fridaynightmovies #janghwahongryeonjeon #fairytale #foreignfilm #roseflowerredlotus #folktale #greatending #kimjeewoon #ghoststory

Carrie (1976) A meek high school girl is horrendously bullied upon receiving her first period in the locker room, only to return home to her religious zealot mother to be abused for the “sin” of becoming a woman. The turmoil and trauma she endures begin to manifest in telekinetic abilities – small at first (moving small objects, busting light bulbs, etc.), but gradually become more aggressive as prom nears and the bullying intensifies, particularly by Queen Bee Chris Hargenson (played to a bitchy hilt by #NancyAllen) for her suspension from the school dance. Based on #StephenKing’s bestselling first novel, #Carrie is a gut punch of a film and very nearly as potent as the book it's adapted from. It’s a tough watch, seeing this poor girl harassed so bad, made only more painful by a sympathetic Academy Award-nominated performance by #SissySpacek. On the opposite end, #PiperLaurie (also nominated for an Academy Award) is absolutely chilling as Carrie’s mother Margaret, a self-appointed “Hand of God” who’s sickening abuse under the guise of righteousness will make your skin crawl. #BrianDePalma does a fine job of telegraphing King’s metaphor of Carrie’s blossoming womanhood into a near-uncontrollable telekinetic power, and he does it with an unmatched style. No better example is the split-screen, multi-angle presentation of Carrie’s ultimate revenge on her classmates during a fiery, harrowing finale. It’s terrifying, stunning, and superbly performed by Spacek, who channels her wild-eyed rage silently and horrifyingly. Look for a young #JohnTravolta as Allen’s dopey boyfriend, #WilliamKatt as Carrie’s date – a genuinely nice guy, and a fantastic performance by #BettyBuckley as Carrie’s gym teacher Miss Collins, who comes to Carrie’s defense when no one else would. Rage, The: Carrie 2 (1999) Rachel Lang ( #EmilyBergl, in a solid first-time performance) is left reeling from the suicide of her best friend Lisa (Mena Suvari), who found out the hunk who stole her heart (“Home Improvement” teen Zachery Ty Bryan) was just one of the varsity douchebags led by callous sociopath Mark (Dylan Bruno) who have a crass “Scorebook” documenting (and rating) their bedroom conquests (suddenly, the Burn Book in “Mean Girls” seems comparatively wholesome). The trauma re-triggers an uncontrollable telepathic ability to move objects, something her guidance counselor, Sue Snell (returning star from the original, Amy Irving) recognizes immediately, and hopes to quell, seeing an opportunity to help Rachel the way she wishes she could have helped Carrie White back in 1976. When deep betrayal and a very public humiliation sends her into her titular “rage”, her telepathic gifts may give this weekend’s party a “varsity”-sized body count. Ugh, nothing transports me back to my high school days like bad ska music, unchecked entitlement, and teen suicide. Largely based on the horrific miscarriage of justice that was the “Spur Posse” case in 1993, “The Rage: Carrie 2” is a nauseating picture, and I don’t entirely mean that as a dig. Rafael Moreu’s script and “Poison Ivy” director Katt Shea’s stylistic approach in expanding Stephen King’s material, however thinly (Rachel is related by happenstance), portrays the troubling (and sadly, still quite prevalent) psychosis of toxic masculinity to a disturbingly realistic degree. By the time the finale arrives, no group of miscreants deserves their comeuppance more and are dispatched in a satisfying array of gruesome carnage. Released merely a month before the infamous Columbine Massacre in 1999, #TheRageCarrie2 seemed like an unintentional harbinger of the horrors teenage bullying can incite and was likely ignored both for its loose connection to the source material as it was for its stomach-churning violence against teens at exactly the wrong time. Carrie (2002) “May” star #AngelaBettis is an inspired choice to play the tortured telekinetic #CarrieWhite in this made-for-television adaptation of the #StephenKing classic. Experiencing her first period during gym, Carrie – completely unaware of how her teenage body works, thanks to her domineering, overzealous mother (Patricia Clarkson) – is traumatized and ruthlessly hazed by her classmates, unlocking a dormant ability to move objects with her mind. When one of her tormentors grows a conscience (Kandyse McClure), she tries to make up for her behavior by having her popular boyfriend Tommy (Tobias Mehler) take Carrie to prom – and we ALL know what a bloody nightmare that becomes. Bettis brings an affective combination of tragedy, trembling fear, and a wicked Kubrick stare to the iconic role, making it uniquely hers. Having the wiggle room afforded to made-for-television films, writer Bryan Fuller and director David Carson can expand and adapt more elements of King’s novel than the classic 1976 theatrical film, such as the post-massacre interrogations from witnesses and survivors by Det. Mulchaey (David Keith). Unfortunately, this also means a far smaller budget, the content limitations of television, and CGI effects ranging anywhere from bad to “hell no”. That said, Bettis absolutely shines in the role, giving Carrie a little more backbone than what we’re used to. Similarly, McClure as Sue Snell, Rena Sofer as Miss Desjarden, Mehler as Tommy, “Ginger Snaps” star Katherine Isabelle as Tina, and “Lost” co-star Emilie de Ravin as the bitchy Chris Hargensen are all quite engaging and genuine. Clarkson is a more quietly subdued version of Margaret White, but it works. I also enjoyed Laurie Murdoch as Principal Morton, whose legal tête-à-tête with Hargensen’s dad was extremely satisfying. Overall, this 2002 adaptation of “Carrie” is true to its source material despite its budget-related shortcomings (and an interesting new ending) and survives on its performances above all else. Carrie (2013) #ChloëGraceMoretz gives an exceptional performance as #CarrieWhite in this modern adaptation of #StephenKing’s first bestseller about a relentlessly abused and bullied teen honing a deep telekinetic ability to move objects when she suffers her first period in the gym locker room. The trauma of not knowing what’s happening with her body, combined with the disgusting hazing from her classmates sparks a flame that she nurtures into an inferno come prom night when a public humiliation unleashes her full fury. Screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa stays true to the source material, telling the story with the full budget required to really do King’s already well-known story justice in a broader sense, while updating it for a more modern age. The film hits all the beats while giving new moves to an old, comfortable dance. Upon its release, though, “Carrie” was relentlessly trolled for – if you can believe it – Moretz being “too pretty” to play Carrie White. Never mind the fact that this is a blatant, backhanded “compliment” to Moretz, who did nothing wrong, but retroactively suggests that Sissy Spacek and Angela Bettis are somehow “unattractive” enough to fit the role. It’s unfair to all three women, and worse, suggests “pretty people” aren’t subject to bullying, which is grossly untrue. This mindset only proves King’s (and director Kimberly Peirce’s) points for them. “Carrie” offers a lot, considering the well-worn territory. Rad special effects, a few left-field surprises, a suitably fiery finale, and at the center of it all, Moretz shouldering it all with a realistic and heartbreaking vulnerability. Julianne Moore goes full religious psycho, and it’s creepy. Gabriella Wilde makes an angelic Sue Snell, Ansel Elgort might be the kindest Tommy Ross, Judy Greer shows great sympathy as Ms. Desjardin, and Portia Doubleday, well…let’s just say she’s SO good she just might be the “bitchiest” Chris Hargensen this side of the written work. “Have you ever been in a situation in which you were suddenly forced to make a life-and-death decision—one that would permanently affect not only you but others as well? Many of us may have wondered how we might react in these extreme circumstances and what ideas and feelings would inform our choices when the clock is ticking, and we have no one to turn to for help or guidance. Recent events have plunged my thoughts into this sort of contemplation. In considering them, specifically the morality of horrible choices, my mind alighted on the Saw film franchise. Saw is a grotesque but immensely popular series of films (they just released the 10th) that tells the story of John “Jigsaw” Kramer, a maniacal killer genius whose elaborate traps or “games” are designed to generate extreme conditions for moral choice for his victims. Jigsaw carefully selects these victims by observing their lives, noting their moral failings, and subjecting them to the “games,” not as retribution (as he sees it) but as a “reawakening.” By his lights, the extremity of the reality, as presented by him, offers the victims the opportunity of instant change—for better or worse. A good example is the “Shotgun Carousel” game of Saw VI. William Easton was the manager of a health insurance company that had caused the deaths of many sick people by denying coverage for dubious reasons. William discovers six of his colleagues who had participated in the scheme chained to a schoolyard carousel that rotates its riders, one by one, in front of a loaded shotgun that will discharge in a matter of moments, killing each in turn. William is offered the chance to save two of them by depressing two red buttons simultaneously, but in so doing, he must impale his hand on a metal spike as “a sacrifice” to show that he has blood on his hands. William makes his choices; two are saved, and four die. It’s pretty awful. But wait.
