For those that regularly search for Sea-Monkey information & media, then you might have stumbled upon some similarly crocheted Sea-Monkey plush throughout the years. I had no luck years ago finding the original pattern, so I kind of gave up on having one made. Finally last year I stumbled upon a crochet artist that had made their own version of it, and it made my day when I was able to adopt it. We eventually got an official Sea-Monkey plush, so it now has a sibling. I've always liked the deceptions of Sea-Monkeys with the three eyes they have during development, very alien-like. In one of the early handbooks we do get to see some drawings of a few Sea-Monkey babies with three eyes. This particular piece was handcrafted by the talented person behind @crocheted.deco. It's National Sea Monkey Day! Today celebrates the tiny brine shrimp that were like magical little creatures that hatched and grew before our eyes. Did you ever have them as pets? Sea Monkeys are a type of Artemia (brine shrimp). They got their name because of their monkey-tail look. Following the popularity of the ant farms, Harold von Braunhut invented the “Sea Monkeys” and hatching kits in 1957. He did most of his advertising through comic books. He once said, “I think I bought something like 3.2 million pages of comic book advertising a year. It worked beautifully.” These little crustaceans have made their appearances on television shows including Spin City, Roseanne, Night Court, South Park, The Simpsons, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, and Desperate Housewives. Sea Monkeys also went into space with astronaut John Glenn on October 29, 1998, aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. We *can* tell you a rumor of a giant brine shrimp that roams the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Reports on its size vary from a large dog to a school bus. What does it do? Triops Longicaudatus 🦐🦀🦞 Life cycle: To complete their lives, tadpole shrimps depend on the changing nature of the temporary waters they inhabit. During the dry season (summer and autumn), their offspring stay inside the eggs. As the pool fills with rainwater during the winter and spring, they hatch and feed on fairy shrimps and other invertebrates. The first larval stage (the metanauplius) is orange in colour. It has a single eye, six legs, and develops through instars (growth stages). Each instar ends with shedding the exoskeleton. The number of segments and appendages increases as Triops grow, and they slowly change to greyish brown. In approximately eight days, they reach maturity and lay eggs. Adult Triops die as the pools dry up. Triops generally live for about 20–90 days if the pool does not dry up. T. longicaudatus is the most widespread notostracan species, and may be found in western North America, South America, Japan, South Korea, and several Pacific Islands. It is most active at a temperature of approximately 20 °C (68 °F), and is usually found scratching the mud at the bottom of pools, searching for benthic food. Triops collect food particles by straining the water with hairs on their limbs. Loose food particles are collected in a groove running down the underside of the body lengthwise, and held together by a sticky secretion until they are swallowed by their very small (2 mm wide) mouth. On this date, sixty years ago, "Sea-Monkeys®", "Instant life" & the representation of hatching brine shrimp design (now known as Hatchy) were officially registered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. As per the official documents, Instant Life/Sea-Monkeys kits first started being sold commercially on October 5th, 1962. Eventually all its trademark paperwork were filed on January 31st, 1963, and after a lengthy processing time, all those trademarks were officially registered on May 12th, 1964. The original applicant was Honey Toy Industries Inc., the company Harold used to sell his many novelty toys during the 1960s. Eventually Transcience was created in 1970, and became the successor of HTI. As per the Department of State documents, both of those companies based in New York ceased to exist (dissolved by proclamation) by the early 1990s. By then operations had moved to Montrose Farm in Maryland. As for the registration of Transcience Corp. in Maryland and its related trademarks... well, that's another subject of its own that led us to the messy case with Big Time Toys. I'll leave that to the legal experts. We have National Sea-Monkey Day coming up on the 16th, I still don't know who started it, and what that date has to do with the brand. #seamonkeys

Thanks to an eBay seller I FINALLY was able to get my hands on one of the new Ocean-Zoo colors with the new redesigned insert. Only about a year and five months since I first saw them in the 2023 Dragon-i catalogue. I've been trying to be more proactive on the collector/completionist side during this Dragon-i era, but without any retail options, it has been proven to be difficult. Where I'm from, I haven't seen Sea-Monkeys in store shelves since the ExploraToy days, so I heavily rely on online sellers; which is another issue on its own with many using outdated product photos, and old stock still being shipped. The class Branchiopoda is divided into the subclasses Sarsostraca, containing fairy shrimp, and Phyllopoda, containing all other members (cladocerans, clam shrimps, and the tadpole shrimp). The subclass name, literally meaning leaf-footed, is derived from their flat, leaflike appendages. Notostracans are placed in the infraclass Calamanostraca, which also contains the extinct Kazacharthra. Life cycle: To complete their lives, tadpole shrimps depend on the changing nature of the temporary waters they inhabit. During the dry season (summer and autumn), their offspring stay inside the eggs. As the pool fills with rainwater during the winter and spring, they hatch and feed on fairy shrimps and other invertebrates. The first larval stage (the metanauplius) is orange in colour. It has a single eye, six legs, and develops through instars (growth stages). Each instar ends with shedding the exoskeleton. The number of segments and appendages increases as Triops grow, and they slowly change to greyish brown. In approximately eight days, they reach maturity and lay eggs. Adult Triops die as the pools dry up. Triops generally live for about 20–90 days if the pool does not dry up. T. longicaudatus is the most widespread notostracan species, and may be found in western North America, South America, Japan, South Korea, and several Pacific Islands. It is most active at a temperature of approximately 20 °C (68 °F), and is usually found scratching the mud at the bottom of pools, searching for benthic food. Feeding behaviour: The feeding method of tadpole shrimps is similar to that proposed for the ancestral crustacean. The anterior appendages (second pair to tenth pair) stir sediments and swirl muddy water into the wide, midventral food groove. The gnathobases (inward-facing lobes at the base of the leg) guide food anteriorly to the mouth. The large flat exopods (outward-facing lobes at the end of the leg) stir and lift the sediments. Fine silt particles and water escape easily, but large, coarse food particles are torn into smaller pieces by the blade-like, inward-facing lobes called endopods at the end of the leg. Diet: Tadpole shrimps are omnivorous and may eat algae, insects, and other organic debris; they are known to chase very small fry, tadpoles, and oligochaete worms. In general, they eat anything organic that is smaller than they are, which even may include their siblings (they are cannibalistic).
