Form / Attitude André Cădere is most known for inserting his stick sculptures into unwanted exhibition spaces, provoking his peers by 'sculpture-bombing' their space. Challenging the depth of minimalism's anti-elitist sentiment, he would question why the artist's work belonged there more than his, highlighting the camarilla underbelly of the art world. The story goes that Harald Szeemann saw a video of Cădere walking around Paris with one of his 'Barres de Bois Rond' sculptures, and was reminded of another phallocentric Romanian artist, Brancusi, who apparently walked from Germany to Paris after WW1. Szeemann wanted Cădere to perform a reversal, and invited him to participate in Documenta 5 on the stipulation that he walk from Paris to Kassel with one of his signature Barres sculptures. For most artists this is a career defining moment. I love this performance, or non-performance really, because Cădere, refusing to be shoe-boxed or typecast just because of some aesthetic and birthplace similarities, faked his journey and arrived by train instead. When Szeeman found out there was a huge argument - his invitation was revoked and he was barred from the exhibition. I try to imagine how it felt waiting for the train, or zooming towards Kassel, what was going through his mind. He doesn't seem to have ever cared about ruffling a few feathers, but I imagine it must have been somewhat nerve-wracking, en route to basically get himself thrown out of the show. 📷🔥 Long-exposure light painting done with flaming debris; Western Massachusetts, Fall 2019. • I would never describe myself as a photographer. I have, however, been creating light paintings for years, for my own personal enjoyment. I bring my studio camera on almost every camping expedition I do, almost exclusively to make pictures like this between midnight and 3 AM. • I keep this body of work pretty much to myself, and my girlfriend who acts as a subject or shooter in many of the photos. I have hundreds of images now, over years of being outside late, late at night. • Something I learned from a great friend/ fellow artist in college, this form of image-making contains everything I love in the practice of art. Somewhere between live performance art and calculated staged photography, it is a balance between wonder and logic, between mystery and control, and in many cases, the balance of risk and reward. It requires an understanding of the tools, as well as the sense of space and motion that takes practice and is often not fruitful. It is exhilarating and at the same time excruciatingly time consuming and frustrating, as well as sometimes ouch-y.
