Marginal Gains / Scattered Ashes • The Shooting Gallery • 18/02/24 @marginal__gains have rapidly become one of the most in demand bands on the local circuit, with a heavy media presence gathered for their set at 7:30 sharp. It'd been barely three months since I last caught the quartet but their sound has grown exponentially, loaded with menacing rhythm and excellent backing vocals, and even a Mariachi-like groove on one track. Wiry guitar lines nod to Protomartyr, as well as The Breeders (Kelley Deal will be a fan), while lead barks and yelps puncture the itchy melody. They only formed last August but with their shows already numbering in double figures, they're sure to continue being one of Newcastle's most exciting new prospects. The tour support for Meryl Streek came in the form of @scatteredashesdublin and another noise-adjacent band hailing from Dublin. The quartet however, furrow elegance over furore, with strong shades of both Joy Division and Interpol but they're stamping their own mark of goth-stained post-punk. Expansive, moody soundscapes are delivered by the torrent and it'll be advisable to pick up the trail of singles they have so far to their name.

Today on Sir John Betjeman’s birthday, 28th August, we launch the major fundraising appeal across all members of the campaign to Save Liverpool Street Station. This is to meet the costs of fighting to prevent harm to the Grade II-listed station and the Grade II*-listed former Great Eastern Hotel. Sir John was the Secretary of the Victorian Society when it formed, and was the figurehead of the campaigns to save both Liverpool Street Station and St Pancras Station in the 1960s and 1970s.
