It must have been 12 years or more since I have visited the Abbey of Sénanque. It was worth another visit. Actually the abbey is being renovated. I was inside and it will be outstanding. A combination of ancient and modern craftsmanship. I stayed a while with one of the stonemasons - impressed by his craftsmanship. Visiting the serene Senanque Abbey, a popular lavender viewing destination. This 12th century Cistercian abbey is still occupied by monks today (secretly photoed one in their garden out back). They reside in their living quarters and garden when tourists visit. ДЕНЬ 5. АББАТСТВО СЕНАНК. Сочетание необыкновенно живописного лавандового поля и строгой романской архитектуры монастыря давно стало своеобразной «визитной карточкой» региона. Три наиболее известных цистерцианских аббатства Прованса - Монастыри Сенанк, Тороне и Сильвакан – часто называют «тремя провансальскими сестрами». Монастырь Сенанк был основан в 1148 году по инициативе епископа города Кавайон. Призыв его поддержали монахи монастыря Мазан, основавшие новую обитель в узкой долине речки Сенанколь. Аббатство быстро росло и вскоре уже само основывало дочерние монастыри. В 13-14 вв. монастырь достиг апогея своего развития. Было возведено большинство его строений, да и за его пределами монахи владели 4 мельницами, семью зернохранилищами и большими земельными угодьями. Но с 16 в. начался постепенный упадок монастыря, а во время религиозных войн он и вовсе был разграблен гугенотами. Число монахов сократилось до десятка. В период Великой французской революции монастырь был закрыт и продан частным владельцам, но в 1854 г. его вновь выкупила цистерцианская община. В 1903 г. монахи покинули аббатство, и спустя 18 лет Сенанк получил статус памятника национального исторического наследия. В 1988 г. небольшая монашеская община вновь поселилась в монастыре. Современная община насчитывает всего 10 человек. Монахи содержат пасеку, возделывают лавандовое поле, добывают и перерабатывают масло из растений. Они полностью обеспечивают себя в быту: каждый из них — и кулинар, и портной, и прачка. Во время сезонных работ они с благодарностью принимают постороннюю помощь (как и встарь, при монастыре функционирует гостевой дом для паломников и «светских братьев»), а также содействие в реставрации и украшении монастыря.
