True to last year’s luck, I completely forgot my birthday anniversary (well I was also nursing a sprained back that month).. May 2002 is when I first opened the doors to this little baby called Sien, and how awful of me to have forgotten her 21st birthday!! Starting at age 22 with nothing more than stubborn ambition, a few cans of paint and an overly creative mind, I turned a humble little space in South Yarra into my very own dream boutique salon. I was mostly a one woman show, learning how to run a business whilst doing everything I could to promote and market myself , and of course servicing my clients. I was on fire, also doing photoshoots for prints like fashion journal and the herald sun’s body & soul, as well as producing directing and choreographing fashion shows for the Melb spring carnival fashion week.. I had fun. After almost a decade, and a short return to teaching in hair academies, I took an extended pause to have my babies. Then came 2020, and I did it all over again, this time as a private studio in Coburg north.. I pinch myself with gratitude every day for the steady growth and support for my humble little business.. it’s allowed me to be present & support my kids as a single parent, both physically and financially. I’ve set my feet firmly in a wonderful & nurturing community, and have gained beautiful and loving friendships.. all while doing what I love- creating hot hair!! Thank you to each and every person who has ventured over to see me in the studio. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our incredible clients, friends, and the local community. ❤️ Parents guide to sensory hair cutting Over the past four weeks we have discovered that some of our guests seem to be quite distressed about the hair cut and salon experience. This has been due to a couple of factors 1. Children who may have been forcibly held down to have their hair cut. 2. Scared at the prospect of clippers 3. Unsure of new surroundings and new people. As a team we absolutely do not want to make our sensory sessions distressing for children or parents. We have come up with some solutions to make our sessions something fun for everyone to like and even enjoy their time at Coco Academy. We are already seeing fabulous results by using these 3 steps (that are highlighted in our guide!) and our children are wanting to come back for their next appointment. Sometimes not even wanting to leave the salon. 🤣 We have focused on the boys as we have found the girls seem to have adapted well to the environment, but are constantly working with our parents to make this experiences as enjoyable as we can for all of our clients! This picture made my day yesterday, but not as much as actually seeing it! Jack has been coming for a little while and for no real reason at all, he just didn’t like having his hair cut. His age, the unknown and not knowing why he had to have his hair cut were probably the biggest reasons for him, which is totally NORMAL! Most kids can feel the exact same! Another success story 🙌 Meet Logan, he has been visiting for a very long time! In this time we have fed dinosaurs, fought sleeping dinosaurs, unwrapped surprises (if you know, you know 🎁) and made some amazing progress! Logan has went from hating his haircut and refusing to brush his hair to now he sits in the chair (and uses the main shop sometimes) with a gown and uses the clippers! This has been a process but it works!
