Delighted to have been invited by the Well-being and Culture team at #U.S.Bank to join European employees today at their Neurodiversity support circle. I spoke about the motivation for setting up Neurodiversity Navan, and ambitions to change our communities with the support of AsIAm Ireland's Autism Charity. I also spoke about: πŸ‘‰ The importance of Neurodiversity Understanding in the community and workplace. Over 85% of Autistic people in Ireland are under or un-employed despite their wide array of talents, skills, and abilities. πŸ‘‰ The importance of understanding Neurodiversity Culture. Encouraging and embracing Neurodiversity; from communication differences, sensory processing, and predictability and control. πŸ‘‰ Sadly, I also had to speak about the importance of changing the judgement and attitudes of people in the community and the workplace. ❀️ We need to talk more about Neurodiversity. Normalise communication differences, normalise sensory differences, normalise stimming in schools, workplaces, public spaces and throughout our communities to ensure that Neurodivergent feel understood, valued and respected; and importantly have the same chance in society as everyone else. Special thanks to Shan Rizvi for the wonderful conversation and Katie Waldron for facilitating the talk. ⁉️ How would you like to see your community or workplace embrace Neurodiversity? #Neurodiversitynavan #Neurodiversefriendlytown #Neurodiversityacceptance #Autismfriendlytown #Autismacceptance #ADHDAcceptance #Neuroaffirming #Neuroinclusive #Stimming #Dyspraxia #Dyslexia #OCD #Sensoryprocessingdifferences

Personal space challenges are very common in children with autism. They might have problems due to sensory processing challenges. They don’t understand sometimes they might get very close to someone which might invade their personal space and make the person uncomfortable. We have to teach them this concept . It’s very important for their own personal safety as well . We can use social stories to teach them about this concept . Save and share this tip with a fellow autism parent.. #sensoryprocessingdifferences #personalspace #personalspaceissues #autismtips #autismawarenessminth2024 #parentingautism #autismfamilystory

Something to think about.... as a child who struggled with sensory differences, nothing ruined my day more than someone making me wear something that felt awful for me. As an adult who has Sensory Processing Disorder, I choose my clothes. I choose what I can and will wear each day. Just because it feels okay for a parent, that doesn't mean it will feel okay for their child. Each day my sensory needs may change but I always choose. There is no one who makes me wear anything. I wear what feels comfortable. I wear what my body will tolerate that day. Shouldn't children who have Sensory Processing Disorder be able to choose and be comfortable too? Their needs should be accommodated. We want them to feel better, not worse. ~ Jeanette Loftus #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorymeltdown #sensoryprocessing #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensorymeltdowns #sensoryavoiders #overstimulated #overwhelmed #sensorysymptoms #anxiety #sensoryprocessingdifferences #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration #sensoryavoider #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensoryoverload #sensory

Do your children have phobias? A phobia is an extreme fear of something specific. Children may have a fear of a person, a type of person, places, animals, bugs or situations. An event or object is often what triggers them to be anxious. For the most part, all children fear the same things but it's the level of fear and degree of anxiety they are experiencing that makes these fears problematic. Children with phobias feel fear so intense that it can disrupt their routine and daily living, often times hindering their ability to concentrate, enjoy activities or relax. These children will cling to their parents, cry and be fearful. There are several common phobias children may have. Getting bloodwork, shots or IV, spiders and bugs, having someone they love get sick or hurt, heights, thunder storms and lightening, flying or travel away from home, enclosed spaces or animals. Specific Phobia - upset stomach - avoids the feared location or object - common phobias are a fear of animals, insects, dark or bloodwork (shots) - anxiety when exposed to a certain object - powerless to control fears - dizziness - intense sweating - difficulties breathing - intense and immediate reaction - panic in particular situations #specificphobiaanxiety #spedificphobia #phobias #childhoodanxiety #childhoodanxieties #anxiety #mentalhealth #sensorymeltdown #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider #anxiety #stress #sensoryoverload #sensoryavoiderandseeker #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensorymeltdowns #sensoryavoiders #overstimulated #overwhelmed #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysymptoms #sensoryprocessingdifferences

Does your child use fidgets? Everyone has different sensory needs that require different sensory tools or accommodations in their sensory diet. Children who have Sensory Processing Disorder require and need sensory input in their sensory diets. We should never use fidgets or sensory tools as rewards. We should always have sensory tools available for self-regulation. The more we accommodate a child's sensory needs by providing the right tools, the more calm and comfortable they will feel. Benefits of Fidgets - increases focus and concentration - reduces stress and anxiety - improves learning and readiness for writing - enhances hand-eye coordination - develops muscles in hands in fingers - promotes creativity - calming self-regulating tool - offers deep pressure - provides sensory input and relaxation - improves fine motor skills and calms the nervous system #fidgets #fidget #sensoryfirgets #sensoryfidget #fidgettoy #sensoryprocessing #sensoryavoiderandseeker #sensorytool #sensorytools #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensory #sensoryavoiders #sensoryavoiding #sensoryseeking #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorytoy #sensoryprocessingdifferences #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensorychecklist #sensoryprocessingchecklist #sensorytoys #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider

Children who have Selective Mutism will usually only speak to people they know very well and are comfortable with such as their parents, people at school or family members. These children get very anxious and don't speak so to most people they just appear to be shy, so often times they go undiagnosed. Selective Mutism - socially awkward and shy - withdrawn - getting angry when asked questions - uncomfortable with expectations to speak - tantrums after school - stiff and tense around unfamiliar people - fidgeting - inability to speak in certain settings - shuts down around strangers - won't speak as they feel embarrassed around others - difficulty processing sensory input - fearful of birthday parties or family gatherings - stubborn or aggressive - fear of being around other people - nonverbal communication to express needs - avoids eye contact - disinterested in events or school - nervous and uneasy #selectivemutism #selectivemutismawareness #selectivemutismsupport #anxiety #sensoryprocessing #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensory #sensoryavoiders #sensoryavoiding #sensoryseeking #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysymptoms #sensoryprocessingdifferences #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensorychecklist #sensoryprocessingchecklist #hypersensitive #sensoryintegration #chidhoodanxiety

Weekly Article April 13th: Autistic Traits and Somatic Symptom Disorders: What Is the Link? Per the abstract, autistic individuals often experience sensory processing differences, and it is suggested that this is a potential risk factor for the development of somatic symptom disorder (SSD). The goal of this study was to review existing literature that discusses the associations between autism and SSD. Several "shared features between the two conditions, such as alexithymia [differences with recognizing, understanding, and describing emotions], altered sensitivity to sensory stimuli, cognitive inflexibility, intolerance of uncertainty, and an increased risk of experiencing stressful life events" were identified during the review of the literature. This study is important because it highlights the need for further research between the associations between autism and SSD. Interested in a full article review? Sensory Processing Disorder does exist. It's real. Our kids are not bad kids. Our kids do not lack discipline. We are not making excuses for behaviors. A meltdown is not a tantrum. Sensory Processing Disorder can cause extreme reactions and anxiety. Children with SPD are not spoiled and they do not do it for attention. SPD does not affect everyone the same way. Please be understanding and supportive. ~ Jeanette Loftus #sensoryprocessing #sensoryavoiderandseeker #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensory #sensoryavoiders #sensoryavoiding #sensoryseeking #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysymptoms #sensoryprocessingdifferences #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensorychecklist #sensoryprocessingchecklist #hypersensitive #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider

Sensory Processing Disorder symptoms can change. A child's reaction can change from one day to the next. They can change throughout the day too. The overwhelming symptoms they felt last week may not affect them this week. How they react can be different depending on their environment and situation. A child's sensory experiences may fluctuate daily. They may avoid sensory experiences today that they will seek out tomorrow. ~ Jeanette Loftus #sensoryprocessing #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensory #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessingdifferences #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration

Weekly Article April 6th: The sensory approaches on improving gross motor skills in children with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review. Per the abstract, this systematic review aimed to gather current research on "the effects of sensory approaches on improving gross motor behaviors in autistic children from an academic standpoint," since, according to current assumption, the impact remains variable. The review included research on utilizing both sensory methods and sensory integration therapy. The findings indicated that tactile and vestibular sensory techniques improve gross motor skills and overall, that sensory techniques support improvement of gross motor abilities in the autistic population. Children with Sensory Processing Disorder tend to not behave and have meltdowns when they are with their parents because their parents are their safe place. A place where they feel more comfortable. A place where they can be themselves. If you feel like your child is behaving for others and not you, don't think it's you. It is a compliment. It means they feel safe to come to you with anything. When your child has a great day with someone else but comes back with you and that's when you notice their behaviors and meltdowns, it's because they love you. They hold it all inside until they are safe with you to be themselves. You are their safe place. It is not your parenting. #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessing #sensoryavoiderandseeker # #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensorymeltdowns #sensoryavoiders #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessingdifferences
