No one would ever suggest withholding a wheelchair from a child who cannot walk. Yet, other types of disabilities require different supports, adaptive equipment and tools, and accommodations. A child may have a formal diagnosis of dysgraphia or may struggle with the skills required for efficient handwriting. Accommodations enable children to access curriculum and complete academic work. Interesting and important research from 2018 out of Michigan State University show that 1- students feel that they are not supported often enough with use of their accommodations and 2- teachers often intentionally restrict accommodations for various reasons, including that they feel accommodations prevent kids from learning to do tasks "the traditional way". Ear defenders were designed for workmen operating loud machinery or game keepers to protect their hearing. More recently, they are used for children on the autistic spectrum who are sensitive to noise. Audiologist DO NOT recommend the use of ear defenders throughout the day. Children wearing them daily were presenting as deaf, as they damaged the neuropathway preventing them from hearing everyday noises. I donโt post a lot about โsafe foodsโ here. A large piece of that is because my diet includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, and textures. I often donโt have to think about the foods that give me texture issues because theyโve been so stable over the years. I think I might have lost a โsafe food.โ I used to love strawberries. But I recently bought these beautiful strawberries at a local farmerโs market and itโs a struggle. I canโt eat them cut up, whole, or cooked in pancakes. Maybe I can try to make a strawberry jam or try cooking them in another way so they donโt go to waste. Itโs really sad to lose a good you once enjoyed. I hope I can find a way to enjoy them again. Sully has Sensory Processing Disorder. Children with SPD may over react to sounds, clothing, and food textures or they may undereact to sensory input which causes them to seek sensory input. Some examples include jumping off tall things or swinging too high on playgrounds. Children donโt have to be one or the other but can be a mix of over sensitive and d under sensative. Children are over sensative if: โช๏ธclothing feels scratchy or itchy โช๏ธlights seem too bright โช๏ธsounds seem too loud โช๏ธsoft touch feels too hard โช๏ธgood textures make them gag โช๏ธhave poor balance or seem clumsy โช๏ธare afraid to play on swings โช๏ธact poorly to sudden movements, touches, loud noises, or bright lights โช๏ธhave behavior problems These symptoms can be linked to poor motor skills too. Trouble holding a pencil or scissors. Have trouble climbing stairs or low muscle tone.They may also have language delay. These symptoms may cause lack of self confidence which leads to self isolation or even depression. On the board is a bingo dabber (object cue) and a bumpy navy blue ball (tangible cue) divided by a lime green textured line. This is to express first and then concept. [Image 2] is a sensory wall of various rectangle foam board pieces with different textures like plastic balls, fake flowers, sponges, and pom poms. This was used in a sensory room to explore preferred and non preferred textures. This activity is important for individuals who mainly communicate through touch. [Image 3] is a page from a tactile book made about hockey. Tactile books can be created to adapt published books, to teach concepts, or to remember experiences. [Image 4] is a sequencing task board. It's a long black foam board with a card, a card in an envelope, a red heart chocolate, and an envelope closed by a sticker divided by textured lines. Who else thinks airports are stressful? ๐โโ๏ธ Iโm not sure if the @flymco specifically designed with neurodiversity in mind, but this little cozy pocket cafe is a great respite from the typical airport overstimulation. Natural and dim lighting, bringing the outdoors in, lots of green, plants and wood that are visually calming and also help to dampen and absorb noise all create a space that feels calmer to the central nervous system than a typical overstimulating airport environment. I just wanted to share a little note on neurodiversity in light of lots of recent referrals to the practice. Often when I meet with parents they have been advised or it is mentioned within a report that their child may have a neurodiverse profile. Itโs only then through our conversation that parents come to understand that this may be referencing signs or symptoms of sensory processing disorder, autism or ADHD etc. Parents can sometimes feel disappointed or frustrated that they didnโt understand this term and if you have experienced that I just wanted to reassure you that you arenโt alone. On Thursday Arthur woke up quite upset. He wouldnโt come downstairs, wouldnโt eat or drink. I did manage to get him downstairs and dressed, but he was still quite upset and wouldnโt leave standing by the front door. I was due to go to work so I was preparing everything for me and the kids and when it came to leaving the house Arthur became really upset and wouldnโt leave. This never happens. Arthur usually wants to run out the door as soon as it opens. I tried to carry him but he was hitting and kicking me and trying to put himself on the ground, pulling my hand and crying. He may not be able to talk but he was trying to tell me something wasnโt rightโฆI had to listen to that. He didnโt want me to leave him so I didnโt. He didnโt go to playschool, I didnโt go to work. We sat by the front door for a long time whilst he calmed down and then managed to get him to his bedroom and thatโs where we stayed for the rest of the day. Have you ever had a word enter your vocabulary that youโd never used regularly before but suddenly you were using it/saying it all the time? For example, when the COVID pandemic hit, we were all suddenly using the word โpandemicโ. ALL THE TIME. I donโt think I had ever said the word โpandemicโ before March of 2020. Thatโs what itโs been like having a child diagnosed with a disorder. Words you never used before youโre now saying all the time. And when you arenโt saying them, youโre thinking about them. (Or googling them.) Since Levโs diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, I have said the word โautismโ thousands of times. A word that I never really said much before. And now itโs a normal part of our everyday vocabulary. Just like that. Overnight. Our entire world suddenly revolved around this one word. Autism. And I am not saying this is a bad or negative thing. Itโs interesting. Your entire world, what you talk about and even what you think about, can change in an instant. I will never not talk about or not think about autism. It is woven into every part of our lives now.
