The proprioceptive sense is another one of the lesser known senses in our sensory system, but it is incredibly important for understanding where your body is in space, or “body awareness.” Proprioception gives us information about our body position and body movements, and uses sensory receptors located in muscles, tendons, and joints. If you close your eyes and try to touch your nose, proprioception is the sense you are using to identify where your nose is in relation to your fingertip. Proprioceptive input can include what therapists call “heavy work”: positions that involve weightbearing on the hands, pushing or pulling something heavy, or moving against resistance. Proprioceptive input is generally calming to the nervous system- like a tight hug, massage, holding a “downward dog” pose, or using a weighted blanket. A child may have difficulties with proprioception if they: ⭐Bump into furniture, walls, or people without realizing it ⭐Don’t seem to be bothered by getting hurt, or have an unusually high pain tolerance ⭐Don’t seem to be aware of food on their face during meals ⭐Have difficulty with grading appropriate amount of force needed for an activity, seem to not know their own strength ⭐Fail to notice if clothing is twisted on body ⭐Seek out lots of bumping, crashing, and rough housing during play ⭐Have a poor sense of personal space ⭐Have difficulty with motor planning or postural control If you have any concerns about your child’s proprioception, reach out to your doctor for an OT referral. . . . . . #playathomept #occupationaltherapy #pediatricOT #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #sensorykids #sensoryprocessing #sensoryseeker #sensory #proprioception #heavywork #sensoryinput #momsofinstagram #dadsofinstagram #delcomoms #mainlinemoms #montcomoms #chestercountymoms #phillymoms #confidentparenting #confidentparentingvillage

We have eight different sensory systems that respond to information coming from our surrounding environment and within our own bodies. We each experience these sensations differently and some may seek these experiences to feel calm and grounded. Children’s behaviour can provide important clues into what their sensory needs may be. These behaviours help them to regulate their sensory systems and better engage with the world around them. Swipe through to learn what different sensory needs can look like and some simple ideas to support them to meet these needs. #SensoryNeeds #SensorySeeker #SensoryProcessing #SensoryLearning #SensoryKids #SensoryDevelopment

Attention seeking has such a negative association… were you ever told as a child to stop being attention seeking? Or that it was bad? When we see our child seeking connection from us, it allows more compassion and curiosity. At the end of the day our kids are still learning how to connect with us in positive ways… have you considered maybe when they do something ‘naughty’ or ‘attention seeking’, they get your whole undivided attention? Even if it’s not a positive interaction - children crave connection from their parents. They are doing what they are biologically designed to do. #attentionseeker #attentiondeficitdisorder #adhdproblems #adhdawareness #asd #autistickids #autisticgirl #autisticboy #parenting #occupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #pedsot #connection #connectionmatters #seekingbehavior #sensoryseeker #sensoryseeking

It’s time for Freebie Friday! 🥳 DM me your email for this free PDF! Toe walking can be linked to sensory processing challenges, among several other things. Some kids may toe walk to help self regulate because it’s giving them proprioceptive input. Others that are tactile sensitive may walk on their toes to avoid walking on a non-preferred texture. Here are some fun activities to try or add to your child’s current home program for toe walking. 🦶 Any we missed? Comment below! ⬇️ **This is not a home exercise program. Last few days of our #AutisticEmpowerment campaign, and today we are looking at one of our sensory experiences – vestibular. What is our vestibular processing? This is connected to our sense of balance and movement. Some Autistic people are hyper responsive to sensory input, and note I said responsive rather than sensitive. Many Autistic people are told we are too sensitive repeatedly throughout our lives. We are exactly as sensitive as we were built to be. Hyper responsive vestibular processing might mean we register even very small movements and/or have a bigger response to them. It might mean that we avoid things like the swings, slides, or roller coasters. Tipping our head back when we are getting our hair washed, or going in elevators might be hard. Some people are hypo responsive and might seek out these sensations! They may swing fast and high, spin without getting dizzy, or be the person rocking on their chair. I can find it very difficult to sit without any movement and will often move my office chair or rock gently if I am in a static chair. Some people take a wee while longer to process vestibular input. This might mean we bump into things more often or lose balance at times. Our sensory processing is not static for a lifetime, and there have been times in my life when I have been hyper responsive and times I have been hypo responsive to vestibular input. Anxiety has certainly played a role in this (and processing of other senses), with the more relaxed I am, the better I am able to tolerate and/or enjoy sensory input. Respecting our sensory differences is key and I appreciate all of my friends who have walked up flights of stairs with me as I avoid lifts! I also respect those who chose to take lifts and met me when I caught up! Access to things like wobble cushions, exercise bands over the legs of a chair, wobble boards, spinning dishes to sit on, and hammock chairs are all things that have made a huge difference to me in helping me sensory seek in this area when required. What’s your vestibular processing like? #autism #autistic #vestibular #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticCulture #sensoryseeking #sensoryseeker

4 reasons of many that having ADHD makes it difficult to relax. I find boredom can a really hard part to having ADHD. I needs stimulating environment, I need dopamine (as those with ADHD often lack dopamine in within there brain) and I need to have interest or an outcome otherwise I do very much struggle with getting bored, inability to focus and sometimes do or start anything. When an ADHD’er is interested in something, the executive functions of the brain, like attention, focus, and motivation, can work better and the brain works more productively. ADHD medication is also seemingly crucial for me, they have so far been quite life changing and I often don’t understand how I got through my life without them. I have the ability to do tasks, be productive, have a QUIET brain (not filled with endless ASHD thoughts), focus more on my autism needs as they have become even more so apparent since starting the ADHD meds, which they said can be common in those with Autism too. Though they are immediate release so they do wear off at times! #adhd #adhdawareness #adhdproblems #adhdbrain #dopamine #sensoryseeker #adhd struggles #autistic #autismawareness #actuallyautistic #disability

Underwhelm can be a common experience for Autistic people but it’s not nearly as commonly talked about as overwhelm, so let’s take a look at it for today’s #AutisticEmpowerment post. Yes, the world can be overwhelming but sometimes we also need a bit more. We often express this through sensory seeking and stimming. Spinning until we are a blur, eating a hot curry, crunching the tortilla chips. I love all the foods on my fork at the same time to give me a mouth full of flavours! I was the kid who swung as high as they could before jumping off that swing. I also know a few Autistic people who don’t like when shops have their music on too low. If you’re going to have music they want it blasted! Some Autistic friends also sought bigger thrills like bungee jumping, sky diving, fire eating, and walking on coals for charity. They have relished in these challenges and the rush they feel after. The adrenaline can be very life affirming! Some Autistic people will also choose to watch movies, TV, or listen to music they know provoke a strong emotional reaction. Sometimes we know we would benefit from a cry so we may put on a particularly sad movie to help provoke us into crying. Helping us to learn about keeping safe when we are underwhelmed and seeking input really matters, especially if we struggle with impulse control too! Learning how to risk assess is an essential skill. How are you sensory seeking today? #autism #autistic #underwhelm #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticCulture #sensoryseeking #sensoryseeker

Calming activities decrease the level of arousal in an overstimulated individual. Do you enjoy collecting objects? If so, what sorts of objects do you collect? Geology is one of my special interests, and I collect rocks and minerals. Spending time interacting with the rocks and minerals in my collection is something that brings me joy. The quartz crystal pictured is from my collection. Just holding it in my hand, feeling its weight, shape and texture, brings me a lot of joy 😊 > > > > #actuallyautistic #differentnotless #neurodivergentcommunity #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #autist #autisticpride #autismspectrum #autisticadults #autisticwomen #proudautistic #autisticadvocate #autisticlife #autisticjoy #stimming #stim #stimmingpositivity #spd #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryseeker #sensoryplay #sensoryactivity #sensoryfriendly #specialinterest #hyperfixation #comfortitem #comfortobject #comfortitems

Children who have Sensory Processing Disorder usually fall into two categories, a seeker or an avoider. Most people think that you have to be one or the other but you can actually be an avoider and a seeker too. It's more common to be both than one or the other. A sensory seeker is hyposensitive and an avoider is hypersensitive. A child with Sensory Processing that is an avoider will become overstimulated because they are sensitive to what is around them and will feel everything much more intense then others. Sensory avoiders will avoid sensory input. Hypersensitive means that you are more sensitive (over-responsive) to input than others. This may look like covering your ears when a vacuum is turned on because it is too loud. Or struggling with the feeling of your clothing, even to the point of not being able to wear clothes. At times we refer to people that are hypersensitive as avoiders, they want to avoid certain types of input because they are more sensitive to them. Hyposensitive means that you are less sensitive (under-responsive) to input than others. Meaning you may want and crave more input to feel regulated and fulfilled. This may look like constantly moving, spinning, jumping, or playing rough with others. At times we refer to people that are hyposensitive as seekers. #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessing #sensoryavoiderandseeker #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensorymeltdowns #sensoryavoiders #overstimulated #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider #anxiety #sensoryoverload #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysymptoms #sensoryprocessingdifferences
