It’s #ogdencami time! About to assemble a black #linen cami to go with the color blocked #peppermintpocketskirt I shared earlier. This pattern is a pretty straightforward confident beginner make. I’ve only sewn it in linen and the thin straps are the most challenging part. I did get a couple pieces of advice from my sewing group recently that really helped so let me share. ✨Cut the straps 2.5 inches longer than the pattern calls for. ✨Once you have stitched the straps, before cutting the thread off the machine, leave an extra long tail. I did 4 inches. ✨Knot the two threads of that long tail to make a loop & attach a safety pin. ✨Thread the safety pin into the tube (after cutting down the seam allowance) to turn the strap inside out. The hardest part is that initial turn. But once you’ve got it going, it will turn rather easily. ✨Lastly, cut that extra length you added in the first step. That initial turn usually stretches the fabric in an unsightly way. Just trim it off. Hopefully these tips help y’all. #austinsewing #sewingtips #sewingstraps #sewingover40

TEENY TINY STRAPS 🌼 I knew I couldn’t make the straps the traditional way, sewing a tube and turning it through, so I decided to expand on the baby hem method. 🌼Photo 1 Press fabric in half. 🌼Photo 2 Turn fabric in and stitch along edge. I use my overlocker tweezers as an awl to hold fabric down. 🌼Photo 3 Rinse and repeat on other side. Two of my favorite types of swimwear straps! 👙 The one on the right is made by folding the fabric over on itself twice to form a strap, then topstitching and trimming away the excess fabric. The one on the left is made by sewing the strip of fabric right sides together, then turning it right side out! And both can be made either with or without elastic!
